I wonder if they would try for Madonna, she can sing, shame about the acting though. Saying that with Lady Gaga, I hate all that self publicity with her pretend and pretentious name, but can that woman sing. As in madonna who is about 100 years old now? Sure… makes absolute sense 🤣 My money is on Ariana DeBose or Anna Kendrick though more likely the former. I just don’t think she’s a big enough name to sell this though.

I didnt really know who she was but I went to see her in concert at Drury Lane and I'm now a fan. She was amazing.

Is Ariana de Bose a "name" to Mr and Mrs Joe Public? No not at all. If you told them she is the 'Angela Bassett did the thing' singer then they may recognise her, but considering how poorly that went down I don't think it would encourage people to book. Plus wasn't her solo show a slow seller? I think they would definitely need a big name as Che to help fill the Palladium

I don't feel she's capitalised on it barely at all.

She won an Oscar for West Side Story a couple of years ago - I think she might be more recognised than you think! Except west side story bombed at the box office. And winning an Oscar has little impact on people recognising someone, unless the film was also a mega hit and it really elevates them. Especially with the downward trend of the publics interest in award shows.

The wider public definitely do not know Ariana DeBose, she would not be a name to sell this out.

The wider public definitely do not know Ariana DeBose, she would not be a name to sell this out. If it is true, I think that is good casting. I also doubt that London is the endgame here - if it is Ariana, London will be a tryout and Broadway the final destination (where she is much better known and famous enough to have hosted the Tony Awards a few years on the run). I don't recall seeing The Palladium as the confirmed venue. Did I miss something? Lloyd Webber said London but I don't recall seeing anything about it being at The Palladium.

According to most in the know this is Palladium summer show bound And also I agree that if Ariana DeBose is in it will go to Broadway. That'd definitely feel like a way to get her in for an Olivier then ship it off to Broadway so Andy has another show on. But I don't think it'd do well here. I think JL will find a star Also I had a dream last night that if this went to the Palladium or TRDL that they'd do Don't Cry For Me Argentina on the balcony outside LOL
Can you imagine

I honestly think you’re on to something there.

Not sure about how Evita is generally cast these days. How important is to have a Hispanic Evita? Ariana could be a win from this perspective.

Can you imagine That's a fun thought! Strange fact: on the original white concept album, although ' Don't Cry For Me, Argentina' appears at the start of the 2nd Disc (Side 3) which you'd think marks the start of Act 2, on the back cover of the album it's listed as the final song of 'Part One'. 'Part Two' beginning with 'High Flying, Adored'. So, in keeping with that, bring it on. With the audience marched out of the auditorium to the stirring beat of 'A New Argentina', then 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina' delivered on the balcony (for preference Drury Lane really gives good balcony), then we can all have an ice cream in the rain.

That makes complete sense that it's essentially just a pre-Broadway try-out, as it's already had a Park run and a Barbican run. There's no actual need for it to return.

I'd be surprised if this was Broadway bound... there's been a couple of Evita productions in the US that got some buzz that sounded like it might come and they never made it. If it becomes another star-studded, award winning production that would be one thing. But if they're looking at this for next Summer, it won't have a chance to compete for the Olivier's

But if they're looking at this for next Summer, it won't have a chance to compete for the Olivier's I think it would be on track for a NY run in the 26-27 season (but gain momentum/buzz with a summer 2025 run in London). SUNSET is running this season and it is highly likely CATS:The Jellicle Ball will pounce in the 25-26 season. I don't think Oliviers matter much to American producers or audiences as they do not carry the same reputation as a Tony - they hardly matter here...and having already been nominated with the Regent's Park run, this production might be ineligible anyhow.

The main role of Evita doesn’t have to be necessarily a big name, the original with Elaine Paige wasn’t a name at the time, nor the revival with the excellent Elena Roger, also the next revival with Madalena Alberto. Producers went with quality casting than star casting. The revival on Broadway was star cast with Ricky Martin as Che, the producers could go down that route instead and quality cast Eva and star cast Che instead. I would prefer that to be honest.

Ariana will have extremely limited box office appeal for, what, a 12-14 week season in one of the biggest houses. However, Evita stands (or doesn't) on the casting of 'Eva' so I'm all for someone who can sing the s*** out of that score - and she sounds like she'd have no problem doing that at all. Surely, the way forward is Harry Styles (or a.n.other) as 'Che'!

Antonio Banderas for Perón then!!!!
One can dream :-)
Btw the idea of a full blown West End production at the Palladium or Drury Lane - possibly the two most prestigious houses in London - as a “pre-Broadway tryout” is hilarious (/naïve/condescending/insulting depending upon intent).

Actually Antonio Banderas loves his theatre, but this is confined to his native Malaga. A couple of his songs have been in Spanish on Elaine Paige, especially What I Did For Love. So saying that Don’t Cry For Me Argentina sounds wonderful in Spanish, so there is a suggestion for a new production.
