Question here: When Webber/Rice/Prince auditioned for Eva in the original production Webber and Rice wanted Elaine Paige but Prince wanted an American actress, does anyone know who the American actress was please?

Is this a guess or is it confirmed? It's a complete guess, but I think it would be a great theatre for it.

This sounds like the Barbican musical 2025 to me. They’ve made a very uninspired choice with Kiss me Kate this year- so would make sense for them to do Evita next year.

The Adelphi one with the great Elena Roger.

Could be the Lloyd version then..! Consider me poised. I mean, if it's at the Barbican. It seems like it's most likely to be a new production as Mr Theatrefan is posting about how it's not the JL version.

I have a horrible feeling that if it is true, it may be the Leicester Curve production at Sadlers Wells. Would keep up there track record of 42nd street and A Chorus Line.

The Adelphi one with the great Elena Roger. Wow - I'm so forgetful. I actually saw that one too. Philip Quast was Peron.... Opened with the projection of the grainy black and white image of Eva... Okay, scrap that suggestion.

Curve production was like a budget JL version with all the influencer stuff. Count me disinterested if that's the case!

Okay, scrap that suggestion. All I remember about that production was the awful choreography where they stand in once spot and do that one dance move over and over again in Buenos Aires. The concert had more energetic choreography!!
I do absolutely adore Elena Roger though.

If this is happening, it'll be either palladium or barbican's summer show.
If it has a significant star attached to it, it'll be have to be palladium as they'll need the capacity in order to make the finances work (as you won't get the necessary £££ a week for the star in a 1000 seat house)
Could see someone fun/big wanting to do the Jamie version though.

ART production of Evita for a while and were even mulling bringing it to Broadway with Rachel Zegler but it seems those plans fell through Yes I had heard those rumours a while back, fell through due to a creative dispute I believe?? Wouldn't shock me if RUG wanted to tone down some elements of that production to play it safer.
My ideal Evita still is like that ART production but I really would love a return to the rock instrumentation of the concept album as I think blowing it out with all the surface-level stereotypical Latin flavours in the newer orchestrations toe the line of campness. Much prefer the drawn back, abstract productions of this show.

Michael Harrison has confirmed that he will be doing the musical next year at the Palladium, so if it is Evita then he will be producing.

Question here: When Webber/Rice/Prince auditioned for Eva in the original production Webber and Rice wanted Elaine Paige but Prince wanted an American actress, does anyone know who the American actress was please? Apparently it was Bonnie Schon, who isn't too well remembered nowadays but appeared in a number of musicals in the 1970s, including Jesus Christ Superstar.

I despised the revival productions. I thought the choreography and staging were just straight up awful and at times just an insult to the material. I'm biased towards Hal's version but I think the only production that's come close to being my favourite is from Asolo rep in 2017. The openning is beautiful: I forget how I stumbled upon this opening some time ago and was so blown away by those 5 minutes that I could only imagine how powerful a production that must've been. If they're going to revive it and not do another concert/semi production, something like this would generate new interest for sure

Whilst I have great respect for the Hal Prince original and enjoyed it greatly (and no doubt he understood the piece) I do think nostalgia clouds judgment in wanting it replicated now. Hal's version plonked on stage in 2025 I fear would be surprisingly underwhelming and I don't think would take off with today's audiences. Very much up for an inspired new direction (assuming we can't have the Lloyd version which I adored) which preferably brings something new/unexpected/exciting to the piece. (Anyway, probs getting ahead of ourselves - wonder if this thread will end up like the Dominion Bette Hello Dolly one lol - #obsolete) That is a really good point - and I speak as someone for whom that original was iconic on so many levels. As much as I'd love to see it again, maybe it is best just left as a really important part of musical theatre history.

I think she was called Bonnie - I think it was Sheon or Shern. Apparently it was down to three ladies at the end but there are a lot of rumours/myths around this casting, including Paige almost being on a plane to LA at one point to replace a struggling LuPone.
