I like the production shots, it all looks very delightfully '60s in design. Even the cheeky ball-pit works for me. Though obviously we'll see how it works in situ when I go in a couple of weeks, assuming it's on...

Charity needs to be able to sing, Charity needs to be able to sell a musical number. The role was written for Gwen Verdon, not Ethel Merman.

The role was written for Gwen Verdon, not Ethel Merman. Now that is a production of 'Sweet Charity' I'd love to have seen!

I'm remaining open minded about this, but I can't say the production photos are filling me with excitement.

It winds me up no end - I know loads of talented singers who are also double or triple threats, and then you get people who can't actually sing being given plum roles like this.
(For the record I don't think AMD can actually act either. She played Lady Macbeth like she was about to cry, for two whole hours.)

The photos show it really is using Warhol as its touchstone. The set is an homage to his studio (The Factory), the use of projection just like the gigs of the time (front projected and clashing with the walls being projected on) and the costumes with a mix of the banal reality of daily grind and the 'out there' fashions of the demimonde kicking against it. It’s the first time I’ve seen it rethought beyond the usual imaginary sixties that you usually get. Anyone versed in choreography know if that is similarly reflecting the same? More loose, improvisational maybe? (Art geek spot - tin foil, ladders, even the balloons are a reminder of Warhol's 'Silver Clouds')

I mean the productions shots are a choice.... I still think this will transfer to the West end if it gets good notices There is no way. It’s dreadful.

Charity needs to be able to sing, Charity needs to be able to sell a musical number. The role was written for Gwen Verdon, not Ethel Merman. The great Helen Gallagher, who played Nickie in the original production, lives up the street from me. Lovely woman; turns 93 in July. Helen Gallagher (center); Gwen Verdon (left); Thelma Oliver (right)

Just got an "about your visit email". Don't think I've seen this mentioned?
So the musicians are in the bar? Not what they normally do but perhaps this is a bigger band than they had for City of Angels?

A friend that went last night, who can usually find a positive in anything, just came back with ‘its Terrible, completely terrible’
So, like, that’s fun!

Whereas I too have a friend who went last night who praised it for being very special and had particularly kind words to say about the leading lady. So it's swings and roundabouts really, I guess some people are going to enjoy it and some people aren't and it's up to you if you want to bother finding out for yourself or just quietly dispose of any tickets you've already bought.

Completely true @baemax - I’m going in with low expectations and seeing what happens 🤷🏻♂️

Low expectations are probably the most valuable tool a theatre-goer could have; if your expectations are at rock bottom, then at the very very worst, you're just going to get exactly what you thought you would and you'll never be disappointed in the same way you will if a show you're looking forward to isn't quite what you'd hoped for. I had to book an evening performance for Charity when I don't usually like being in the West End on a Saturday night, so I'm going to go in with "permission to leave at the interval if I'm not feeling it", that usually helps too.

For those who have seen both, how does AMD compare to Tamsin Outhwaite, who i thought managed to zap most of the fun and charm out of the role.
They should have just brought Bonnie back to reprise her amazing 1998 performance!

Hmm, I'm going on Friday and not feeling so enthusiastic now... I am also going on Friday and i’ve had to make a bunch of far more complex than usual childcare arrangements which are making me grumpy. It does mean I am unusually determined to enjoy the show though.

The more I think about this the more I dislike it. I'm very selective about what I try and get tickets for at the Donmar, it's one of my favourite venues and I'm rarely disappointed. But I'm sorry too say this was my worst experience there. I'm intrigued to see the reviews.

It failed in every single respect. I knew Josie whatsername wasn’t a good director but little did I realise just how dreadful she is. This was an embarrassment for all involved.
