Off to see the first preview of I and You tonight at the Hampstead Theatre. It’s written by Lauren Gunderson and directed by Edward Hall. I am informed that Lauren was the second most performed playwright in the US after Shakespeare last year which is quite a feat.
The show runs until 24 November with a press night next Thursday (25 October). It’s quite short, lasting 1 hour and 25 minutes with no interval so hopefully it’ll still be worth the ticket price (that being said I only paid £10). It stars Maisie Williams of Game of Thrones and Doctor Who fame who I’ve always had a soft spot for, hence why I’m off to see it tonight.
Anybody else got tickets for this?

Yes, I booked on the day public booking opened and later had to pay a fee to change the date due to my op, so I hope it's as good as they claim! Even more so as offers have subsequently appeared; I really MUST take my own advice to stop booking ahead for Hampstead main house.

The audience is quite an interesting mix of people, half of whom look like they’ve come to support local theatre in Hampstead and half who are quite clearly Game of Thrones fans (and several men with full face beards and a few “in costume”). I really hope the Game of Thrones heavy vibe doesn’t spoil Maisie’s theatrical debut in an unrelated role. |

I have a ticket but I got bumped off the first preview when it was cancelled. Jokes on them though, asked for a refund and booked the seats that had subsequently gone on sale at a third of the price.

Just wondering, has anybody seen this yet? I really want to see Maisie Williams (never watched Game of Thrones but she really impressed in TV film Cuberbully a few years back). Also, any reviews on what Row M is like in Hampstead Theatre? Never been there before and the chance of getting a £10 ticket is very tempting, but assuming it;s restricted view, exactly how restricted is it?

I am going tonight. In a nice theatre related 'Game of Thrones' tribute I may dress up as Hannah Waddingham and ring a bell shouting "shame" after every scene change.
Or I may dress up as Jaime Lannister. I hope there is somewhere for me to put my sword during the show.

I thought her performance was lacking, not cutting her teeth on the boards showed, but if she opts for more theatre work in the future she will get better. She seemed talented and her performance certainly wasn't bad but just felt wasn't at the level needed for this play. The play itself had its moments ( one in particular which will become clearly apparent when seen ) but often lacked dramatic intensity and become disengaging at times.

Thanks, sounds fine to me, I'm not fussy with seating and for the price I'm more than willing to put up with it. |

Saw today and her co-star had much more of a presence than she did. Was surprised that most of the audience was older than my 63.

A pleasant surprise.
A much more intelligent play than it first appears, the use of the poem and the interplay of I and You is cleverly realised as the theme evolves and finally comes into focus. The twist is subtly signposted and it is quite easy to miss the clues.
Maisie shows promise and choosing a low key stage debut I believe suits her inexperience and felt that she is growing into the role and would not be surprised if I was to see it again later in the run her performance will have evolved.
Zach also deserves praise as it cannot be easy to jump into such a prominent production as his first professional role.
The usual Hampstead audience were a minority which was expected as it was a Friday night but as overheard by a lady behind me, how many will return for Vanya.

Hm. A strange one this. Firstly let me say I thought both Maisie Williams and Zach Wyatt were both very good, full of charisma and they sparked off each other well.
There were one or two laughs but the whole thing felt a bit slight and the ending didn't feel particularly earned. I won't spoil it. I'm not sorry I watched it but I'll be very interested to see Maisie Williams chooses as her next stage role.

No one was dressed up as a character from Game of Thrones though which was most disappointing.
I stood out like a sore thumb. Very embarrassing.

The play is about a boy called Anthony (Zach) going over to Caroline (Maisie)'s house for a school project. It's stated and reinforced throughout that she's sick and doesn't attend class and eventually she explains that she's on the waiting list for a liver transplant. In between discussing the poem that's the focus of the school project, Anthony mentions that he saw somebody die that day, they were mid-way through playing football/basketball (I can't remember the sport) and had a heart attack and died in front of him. At the end of the play the set collapses and it's revealed that it was actually Anthony who died playing sports and Caroline is about to go into surgery and get his liver transplanted into her. The play then ends there. I think it's seeded throughout that he's dead but if you don't know to look for it you can easily miss it all.

I thought this was absolutely dreadful. A dire script, poorly acted (he is slightly better than her, but that’s no real compliment). If I wasn’t sat in the middle of a row I’d have been out the door long before the end.

I can imagine that it reads very well on the page, but is not very well realised in this production. |

The twist was the thing that actually was well realised in this production, it was the rest of it that struggled.

I agree, I thought the twist was nicely done actually.
Taking it out of context and making a snap judgement based on that one moment is a different matter of course.
