Saw the three ladies on BBC Breakfast this morning and made me think I really would like to see this show ASAP! Probably covered elsewhere (though I can't find it) - is this a completely new production? Or is it the same as the most recent tour? If the former is it by the same creative team as the tour or new people? Cheers. Keeping everything crossed for a cast recording. Though no doubt as usual with London shows (the recent Sondheim fest aside) hoping for that is a highway to nowhere. I saw 9 to 5 on the last tour and for me it was okay but nothing special. When it was announced for the Savoy, I was doubtful whether it was a strong enough show for that venue following Funny Girl and Dreamgirls, and decided not to book a ticket for the previews as I do for most new musicals. Anyway I changed my mind from what I read on this forum plus a conversation on Tuesday at Wimbledon with somebody who had already seen it. I booked online a £55 front row (BB) seat for last Wednesday evening. I thought the whole show was funny, well sung and just perfect escapist entertainment. The casting is spot on; Brian Conley is hilarious, Bonnie Langford never fails to impress ( esp in her smalls!) and Caroline Sheen is a more than worthy substitute for Louise (Redknapp). The set is way superior to what I recall from the tour and I think it's going to do very well. |

I think the cast is performing on the One Show Friday night. Dolly Parton is a guest and the show itself has a delayed start of 8pm Friday night so I am assuming that delayed start is to facilitate a performance on the one show.

I wonder if, given its good word of mouth and that it is selling fairly well thus far, we could see them extend the West End run and them take out another set on the UK Tour?

Saw this tonight and it exceeded all expectations. Amber is fantastic in this. She has a great voice. My only issue is that Caroline Sheen isn’t staying for the full run, she was phenomenal.

When walking out after seeing this last night and overhearing conversations there was a lot of disappointed people that expected it to be Dolly Partons hits. It’s not something I ever thought about as I knew the score already but it’s obviously something that people are expecting.

They're live on the One Show tonight, possibly around 7pm as they have to get back to the theatre for an 8pm start. Explains why the show kicks off at 8pm tonight.
Also the promise Dolly Parton is going to be there tonight, as Alec quoted earlier on.
The vibe is surprisingly positive for this, I saw the tour and it was nothing special and I remember those horrific projections of Dolly, so with all that on board I ma happy to be going tonight.
The show does have great songs.

Looks like the press night is Sunday- Brian Connelly just said on the One show.
That would explain why there isn't a show on Monday...

Dolly was wonderful on The One Show.
You can't not love her.
That half hour has surely shifted a good few sests.

Just caught up with the One Show. Thoroughly enjoyed the cast performance on the show. Now to book for the show for my birthday in May. Should be a fun night at the theatre.

This one was meant to be the seasons shocker, with a terrible stunt cast to boot,
Was at 9-5 this evening and what did stand out were the performances the ‘nobody’ unheard of Amber Davis was a revelation singing the superb ‘Get Out and Stay Out’, now she is a somebody and I will watch her career with interest. Natalie McQueen who was fantastic in Kinky Boots is brilliant in this, Caroline Sheen equally, Brian Conley just wanted to have fun and it is infectious and Bonnie Langford is a hoot.
4 great songs in the show; 9-5, Heart to Heart, Let Love Grow and Get Out and Stay Out. The book was a bit weak and insipid though. That’s why it will never be more than a 3 Star show.

Ok long time lurker, first time poster so be gentle!
I have to say this show has really confused me as to whether I enjoyed it or not, I’ve just come out this afternoons matinee and I’m kind of lost for words.
Firstly, there are some really good parts of this much of which I think has already been mentioned. Amber was a revelation for me, I was one of those who scoffed when I heard she’d been cast but blimey did she prove me wrong! Get out and stay out has long been one on my playlist and it’s hard to forget Stephanie J Block’s version but she did it justice and smashed it clean out the theatre.
Bonnie was also great, she throws her all at the part of Roz and has the audience eating out the palm of her hand during Heart to Hart. I just wish I was as flexible as her at the age of 31 let alone when I get to her age!
Both Caroline and Natalie are solid in their roles but I felt Natalie’s accent did slip a few times during the performance which was unfortunate but didn’t detract too much from her characterisation. I’m also interested to see Louise in the role of Violet, I just can’t imagine her playing that role at all but like Amber I’m happy to be proved wrong.
The interjections by Dolly herself I found a little cringe inducing, especially when she looks down from her clock and is quite clearly looking in the wrong direction. Like others I overheard many in the audience thinking she would be there in person and being a little disappointed that she wasn’t and that last karaoke version of 9 to 5 with Dolly was one step too far for me I’m afraid.
Lastly I have to comment on the abysmal audience who were in this afternoon. During the first half alone I counted over 20 people leaving the auditorium for a toilet break and many of these had the audacity to ask the ushers how long the show had left. Lots of whooping and hollering killing some of the key musical moments such as Shine Like the Sun and general bad etiquette throughout.
Won’t be on my list to return to but glad I’ve seen it.

Saw it this afternoon with a truly ghastly audience who seemed to want to get drunk the second they arrived at the theatre and the clear-up after of their discards was really something: do people leave this much detritus in their living rooms? Anyway, I saw the Joe Mantello production on Broadway in 2009 and that was no great shakes but it was SWEENEY TODD compared to this one, which is a cartoon of a cartoon, so much so that I felt like penning poor, blighted Brian Conley a condolence note afterwards. Still, the audience for it will eat it up but it's going to get mauled by the critics. Bring back DIRTY DANCING -- all is forgiven. (Well, maybe not quite ALL .... !!)
