Went to watch this on Sat night. Had a great time. The whole cast was faultless. The play was hilarious. Nice to see it updated a bit. The whole thing moved along at a fast pace. Only downside. The long intro could have been shorter.
The whole show clocked in at one hundred & sixty mins(including interval)

Having Tartuffe for A Level it was nice to finally see a production, especially this updated version
It’s a fun production. Not just making fun of Islam but millenials and gender studies students as well

Saw this last night with the usual audience of Midlands worthies, no kids around for this one though if I were a teacher this is the production I would take them to. The update to a Brummie Pakistani Muslim family works a treat and on the way we get a Bosnian, Muslim Cleaner who knows the ways of the world, an explanation of 'honour', the hijab and the cultural richness of Islam. All good if a bit obviously placed for balance. Some lovely acting and overacting.. good set, great musical accompaniment to the action and rap singing. Because of all the different accents and the singing it was tricky at times to catch all the words. And the laughing from the audience covered some of the lines which was a shame. I think they needed to work on timing and direction of the lines.
I would love to hear the opinion of a Pakistani heritage Muslim person on this.

Same language and similar culture
It was funny enough
But hardly amazing
Panto
The writers are involved in goodness gracious me
And citizen khan
It’s a bit annoying
That Asian writers can’t do anything serious
And have to pantomime”ise” us all the time
High art it is not
Compared to merry wives
I thought that was more sophisticated humour

I agree with you, Parsely. There were a few moments of quite horrific real stuff, when the father lost his temper but perhaps this is also somewhat stereotyped.

We went to see this for our family RSC Christmas theatre outing and thought it was easily the best thing we'd seen in 2018, out of around 40 productions. Very smart update of Moliere that keeps the spirit of the original whilst moving it to modern day Birmingham. Our teenagers dragged all the way from London to Stratford loved it as did my Brummie parents. Comedy maids are rarely funny but the Bosnian cleaner in this kept the laughs running whilst scoring points about women's rights, not an easy feat. There were also moments of genuine pathos and fear amid the laughter, with characters you genuinely cared about. It deserves a wider audience but I fear that the combination of the disastrous Tartuffe at Theatre Royal Haymarket and the impending Tartuffe at the National will preclude that. It's on until Feb 23 and well worth a trip.

Let’s see if Birmingham can cope with this. I enjoyed it , if it is the same RSC prod I saw, but it hits hard on the stereotype button at times. Hope we don’t get any smashed windows or shouting crowds for this one.
ps I can’t recall precisely the hijab chat I referred to above but in the light of what is going on in Iran, I hope they check it carefully…
