I saw this again tonight. Where has the heartbeat gone, that was in New York? I saw this tonight for the first time and knew very little about the show before hand. The main thought I had leaving tonight was, this would work so much better in a smaller intimate theatre. The Adelphi appeared too big for this and may be the reason that there was no heart at all present tonight. |

I thought it looked a bit lost too, and wondered what size theatre it’s in on Broadway.
I’m going to be a grump now, (because having seen two other excellent shows this weekend they’ve shown up Waitress significantly) but the whole pie thing. Now don’t get me wrong, I love me a pie. But the pie thing seemed to take more precedence than any other thing in the story. Ok she made pies in a diner, great, but did EVERYthing in the story have to go through the pie treatment? I was sick of pies by the interval and positively queasy by the end.
Enough of the pies FFS.
I liked Dr Vomiter though, he was well cute and I liked the gurning.

Two different sets of friends have seen Waitress this week, both are ‘musical’ and played in bands/orchestras in the past, but neither I’d say were hardcore musical fans to the point of some of the regulars here..
Both of them loved this and raved about wanting to see it again. Lots of positivity for the story and KMP in particular!
So if they’re the target audience for this - the ocassional trippers to London to see a show - then it’s done it’s job on them this week.

It's a little bland and does suffer from being generally undercast and while Ms McPhee's vocals were really outstanding, she does not cut it with the acting. Marisha Wallace scored well in a stereotypical role but I found other cast members rather weak particularly the "Ogie" who should be run out of town. It's a good score very well played by the onstage band. I just feel it would be greatly improved by better casting choices. Sorry.

I just watched the video of this on whatsonstage youtube channel and unfortunately it's put me off even more. The music sounds so generic and the first song that Katherine and David sang was directed like something out of a school production.

Although I didn’t much care for the plot, I think with a more charismatic lead, I may have been better disposed to at least stay to watch Act 2. I do find the casting choices in this show very odd. I’m not sure if KMP is a name that means anything to anyone over here who hasn’t watched ‘Smash’, so I can’t imagine she’d have that much commercial pulling power. Certainly no more than the actress who created the role on Broadway or the person who wrote the music. David Hunter is to me just a safe pair of hands in a second cast type guy (as in Once and Kinky Boots) but nothing more. Laura Baldwin was so far over the top that for me, she squashed the humour out of her role ( plus I found her geek/ squeaking inaudible at times) and you’ve already articulated what I thought about Marisha Wallace. There’s no doubt about the quality of KMP’s vocals but her acting chops are another matter completely. There are so many MT actresses in the UK who I think would have made a better fist of the lead role ( especially if commercial pulling power wasn’’t an issue). I’m absolutely with you on Ogie too. It was his ‘comedy’ number in Act 1 that cemented my decision to depart at the interval. I wonder though how much of that car crash number was the fault of the director though? I wish the show a long and healthy run but personally I wish I’d stuck with listening to the CD at home rather than spending a not inconsiderable amount on buying tickets to see the show itself. |

I think it could be something lost in translation a bit. I think on the whole, Americans just love pie and it's symbolic of being American and goes hand in hand with patriotism. It's a big thing for them, us, not so much. The more I read, the more I know this just isn't for me. On the whole I find the whole thing to be a bit 'blah'. |

I’ve always loved this show, and I’ve been lucky to see Jessie, Sara B and Katharine as Jenna (in NYC) and all 3 were great in their own way. I like that each actress has their own take on how Jenna is portrayed. katharine’s acting was stellar imo. Hers is a quieter more reflective Jenna than the way Jessie or Sara played her, and for me that was more impactive and moving, especially in Act 2, with the build up to SUTBM, SUTBM itself and then through to the ending. I’ve never really thought of Waitress as a show of 2 halves, but Act 2 is for sure the most emotional, especially with the big 11 o’clock number.
I’m finally seeing the show in the West End this week and can’t wait to see how’s it’s translated over here. I really like the casting choices (other than Jack as Ogie by the sounds of things lol!) and it will definitely be interesting to see it over here. The social media reception response to people who have seen the show seems to be largely great so far, and super enthusiastic.
Do I think this will be a critical darling? No, because I know this won’t be a show for everyone, and it’s certainly not perfect, but it’s the type of show that if it impacts emotionally with its audience it’s impacts hard, which is why it’s one of those shows that people who do love it go back to time and again.

I hesitate to ever comment on this thread again, but to lead on from the Lucie rumours, Stephanie ends her Broadway run as Jenna on the 24th Feb according to the Broadway World board, so could this be Lucie's time?

Well she was at the 9 to 5 gala yesterday when you'd think she'd be in rehearsals for taking over the lead on Broadway in a weeks time..so I don't think so personally. I think she will be London's

If we could go back to the pies for a minute, has anyone had the apple crumble one? Are there bits of crumble "pastry" in it? I can see that they could get away with a chocolate salted caramel mousse but surely they're not selling a jar of soggy apples for £6??!

Yeah, the apple one isn't great. They've got a nice rich crumble on the top, but they've also got chunks of apple underneath, and the niceness of the crumble doesn't make up for the cold wet apples underneath. I maybe wouldn't go quite as far as soggy, but it's not far off.
(By the by, you seem to be allowed to keep the jars afterwards, and they're quite a nice brand, if you're of a mind to peel the stickers off and reuse 'em.)

The chocolate salted caramel surprised me, I chose that one as (after reading this thread) I was expecting it to be just a mousse but it did have a very crumbly biscuit type base. Still refuse to call it a pie but I will be tempted to buy another one if/when I return to the show.

Honestly, they're just the theatre equivalent of those Gu puddings you get in ramekins in the supermarket. A biscuity layer, a bunch of sweet gooey flavoursome stuff, and a jar you can keep to reuse later, but even more useful because it actually comes with a lid.

Lucie taking over in the UK would make sense but it seems ironic they bring Kat all the way to the UK then send Lucy to Broadway. If they wanted Lucie why not have her open the UK run?

Maybe she's an Equity exchange for Kat? Makes sense although are the rules that strict now as a lot of well known actors may not be in Equity? For Lucie to go on Broadway it could need Kat to be cast in UK, if Broadway's rules are stricter? |

Rather enjoying this so far, with the exception of Jack McBrayer’s singing which is dreadful (though he is very funny). Stephen Leask is getting a lot of laughs as is Marisha Wallace. Katharine McPhee is great as Jenna.

My friend went last night and she was almost angry about how bad Jack McBrayer's singing was! 😆 Btw if anyone is wanting to get day tickets for this this week, i'd get to the box office early-ish. My friend turned up at 9.30 today thinking it'd be fine but she missed out, and they apparently only sell 20 day tickets a day. She said there were about 30+ people in the queue when the box office opened. |
