My ideal Jenna's would be 1. Rahcel Tucker 2. Sheridan Smith (More ideal as she will sell tickets) 3. Idina Menzel (Shocked she hasn't been asked to do this yet) 4. Sara Barellis (To "open up" the show here for 2 months only) 5. Emma Watson (attract Harry Potter/ beauty and the beast fans to the show) 6. Samantha Barks (After her stint in Pretty Woman) I can see them Stunt casting Dawn and Becky (Carrie Fletcher, Amber Riley Are my pics for Dawn and Becky Carrie will bring In the You Tuber's and Amber will bring in the Glee fans like she did for dreamgirls) in 2 years and get a non celeb for Jenna as they Stunt cast Dawn and Becky or Dr Pottimor to bring in the crowds....

Lol for a left wing forum it's all got very right wing brexiteer all of a sudden. Personally I don't care which country they are from, although I'd have thought a tiny winner would be a better draw than someone off a minor show hardly anyone's seen Now musicals are more of an international collaboration than national, if that isn't noticeable in the cast, then the creatives would possible bear that out, look at the eighties mega-musical as an example. For the person leading the line, you want the best person possible, regardless of nationality.

Idina Menzel is literally my favourite person but to be honest she’s too old for Jenna now and I really don’t think this suits her vocally or character wise. And Emma Watson? No. They could barely make her sound good with autotune in Beauty and The Beast. (Obviously just my opinion though)

I really hope they give the lead to an actress who is good at baking, has worked in a diner and has been a victim of domestic abuse. It will be such a shame if they don’t take this great opportunity to recognise the above category of performer. I am sure they will.

Idina is definitely too old. Presumably Jenna needs to be 25ish-35ish, with a bit of wiggle room? (complete assumption as I haven't seen the show, but based solely on the plot as I've heard it). My vote still goes to Rebecca Trehearn I think. Maybe Danielle Hope if she wasn't tied up with Rock Of Ages. What's Hannah Waddingham up to these days?

In terms of Jenna’s age, Jessie, Sara, Betsy and Katharine are all mid-30s and Nicolette is 30. I think Jenna really should be at least that because she’s supposed to have been in a dead-end abusive marriage and stuck working in the diner for a number of years, she’s not a 20-something bright-eyed young girl. But then I don’t think she should be played by someone over 40 either.

I think Rebecca Trehearn would be pretty much perfect for this. Fingers crossed.

I totally agree Rebecca Trehearn would be fabulous. A couple of people have mentioned Julie Atherton now too, who I think would be incredible.
Some of the dream casting I've already seen around the web (not necessarily on here) has been a bit unusual, as the point of Jenna and her journey throughout the musical, as has already been mentioned by lewisv1733, is that she's watching the years slip by, going no where in her job, and stuck in an abusive relationship with her childhood sweetheart (as the characters sing in the opening number "Some things never change", it hints towards an endless repetitive cycle, I.e. they've all been stuck in their ways for years and years). Therefore I definitely think the actress playing Jenna (and Becky too, for that matter, given that her story sort of mirrors Jenna's) should be played by a leading lady in her 30s, at least. Judging by the casting on B'way so far that seems to be what writer Jessie Nelson and the rest of the creative team envisioned too.
Broadway and the tour have had some amazing actresses in the role and regardless of who we get over here, I trust they'll be amazing.

My heart will be VERY happy if I get to see Rebecca Trehearn as Jenna, and I've thought that basically since I first saw it. Can't help but laugh at how many people say CHF would be good for Jenna, at least she's said herself on Twitter that she's too young for it! IMO Jenna and Becky come across as in their early to mid 30's and Dawn is younger, mid 20's perhaps, as they come across as looking after/out for her.

Some of you have clearly not seen this musical in terms of casting
Age Body size Vocal style Acting ability American centric relatability Status/celebrity/fame Hair length and colour
The list goes on!

Yes! 100% Rukaya ! Rebecca is such an incredible actress, she'd be wonderful. (And yeah, It'd crossed my mind that those suggesting CHF as Jenna perhaps weren't super familiar with the story (nothing wrong with that, of course), as she seems VERY young for the role. As Dawn though, she'd fit the age profile fine) musicalmarge I'm not sure things like body type (?) and hair length and colour are pertinent to the story, are they? And in any case, a few of the Jenna actresses have been wigged as far as I'm aware.

I don't know how much McPhee would be paid but if they can afford it, go for it I say.
I had never heard of this film (despite being a film fan) but knew of McPhee even before Smash and her doing Broadway. I think there will be plenty of people under 40 or so in the same boat. Same with Mraz if he is doing it too. The show started on Broadway with Jessie Mueller who is unknown outside of theatre circles and did fine without needing a star for a while, despite the film not being big there either.
I don't really care about this show myself but I only heard people being pleasantly surprised by her performance so go for it I say.
And I truly couldn't care less that she's American. I like getting the chance to see American performers without having to travel there and as has been pointed out plenty of Brits go over there too. Some of my favorite performances on screen and stage have been people playing different nationalities and erm, the character herself is American to begin with. I'm sure there will be British women that will get the chance to play Jenna after McPhee.

Maybe a long shot but what about Cassidy Janson? Admittedly, I don’t know a whole lot about the show, but have casually listened to a few songs on the cast recording.

If they get Keala Settle in then that will sell a lot more tickets, her name isn't necessarily known in the main stream but if they advertise it as Keala Settle from The Greatest Showman and plaster her face on every bus then it will resonate with the public/toursists. Joe Public doesn’t know what she looks like, though - wasn’t she wearing an actual beard in The Greatest Showman?

I’ve been saying it from the very beginning. Since I heard Jessie on the cast recording. It just fits everything CJ can do. But who knows

I think Julie Atherton would be cracking but I would also like to see someone like Lauren Samuels or Lizzie Connolly.

Oh come now. That's just silly. The fact is the show has a terrific central leading lady role and people are just saying that if the producers are considering Katharine McPhee as the lead then there are several British actresses who are just as talented and just as well known as McPhee in Britain who could play the role and get a really meaty leading lady role. They aren't saying "British at any cost even if they're rubbish". haha it was said partly tongue in cheek but there is an element of truth to it. British jobs for British people was part of the brexit debate and move from the general chat forum to here and that's what people are saying. Completely forgetting the large amount of Brits that are working/have worked on broadway recently, also across America in various tours (king and I, Mary poppins for example). In some cases entire British casts have transferred to Broadway. it all just seems a bit hypocritical Seriously, a ton of Brits, and like you said, entire British casts, have come over to Broadway in the past few seasons and they all have killed it. Nationality isn't important, talent is (for the most part).

The competition for roles like this must be fierce - so many talented performers and only one part!

How about Rachel John if she leaves Hamilton at the end of the year?
I'd love to see Clare Halse play Dawn, the younger of the three ladies personally.

Am I alone in wondering why this isn’t called Wait and played by a beard wearing tuba player from Leytonstone experiencing a mid-teen revelation that he would prefer to be a piece of 18th century bedroom furniture?
I am? Cool.

After watching the new Mamma Mia for the second time yesterday I think Lily James could potentially be great casting for Jenna at some point, I think she has the right voice for it. She’d be a good call if they need to get a name in later in the run if she wasn’t as busy with film roles as she seems to be right now.

She'll be doing All about Eve at the Noel Coward Theatre from February. {Spoiler - click to view} I don't think her voice is strong enough for Jenna tho
