Polycarpou would be perfect. To be honest, I'm not sure I want to see another production so soon after Daniel Evans' fantastic CFT version last year, but Polycarpou would certainly make it very tempting!

And, at 72, she's surely too old to play the mother of teenagers. I know its acting, but there are limits, especially somewhere as intimate as the Menier!

Who was suggesting Lipman play the mother of teenagers?
As I said - Coronation Street apparently puts her out of the picture, and the fact that she was joining the show (which I haven't watched since about 1988) had passed me by - I thought she'd be great as Yente.
YENTE. NOT GOLDE.
In the film, Yente was played by Molly Picon, who was 73 at the time. On Broadway, the role was originated by Bea Arthur - only 42 in 1964, but there's no reason Yente can't be played older, and she usually is.

You certainly can, she'd be a wonderful Golde. With her and Peter Polycarpou in the cast, I'd go and see it.

Polycarpou would be perfect He would, but if he isn't Jewish, will there be some stupid campaign by the professional moaners to prevent him playing it? Hope not, as I agree it's a brilliant idea. Well most of these campaigns seem to be based on caucasian performers stepping into non-caucasian roles so I would hope that a man of Greek descent playing a Russian Jew wouldn't constitute a significant enough ethnic disparity to ruffle anyone's feathers. Those professional moaners will take any excuse though... |

In The current climate I'd be surprised if they don't cast a Jewish actor. especially as I seem to recall some comments surrounding the last Broadway revival and how it was great an actor of Jewish decent was cast. the idea of a none Jewish actor seemed to be frowned upon

There was a considerable controversy in New York when Molina played Tevye. And, unsurprisingly, he was extremely good in the part - though no one seemed to care about that.

Saw the most recent revival with Danny Burstein and really loved it. Fully expect the Menier to cast Marcus Brigstocke and Lara Pitt Pulford again. |

Well apologies, I stand corrected then. I hadn’t heard about that. I’m Jewish and personally I disagree that the part MUST be played by a Jewish actor. My opinion is that casting should purely be dependent on the best person for the part. |

Thinking about it, it’s a shame that neither Paul Kaye or Simon Lipkin are old enough to play Tevye. I think both of them could master that role brilliantly if they were closer to the right age.

Paul Kaye is 53. Simon Lipkin is 32. Topol was 36 when he was in the film version. I’ve always thought of Tevye as being a man in his fifties. Perhaps that’s because Topol has played the role at so many different stages in his life. Simon still looks very young to me, but maybe Paul could be a good choice. He did a cracking version of Fagin’s ‘I’m reviewing the situation’ on a TV show about Klezmer music. It’s been a while since he did Matilda, so maybe this could be the right time for him to do another musical? I’ve seen enough versions of FOTR to last me a lifetime, but if he was in it, I’d book a ticket in a heartbeat. |
