I didn't know that the Donmar had a studio space?
It be hard to get tickets then?

I was wondering if I’d seen it but I don’t recall 😂

Yes, it's a one man play, and technically the Dryden studio is the Donmar's rehearsal space but they have been known to open it up for occasional special performances.

Wait, they've automatically entered everyone who's already on one email list or other? That seems... an odd decision. I can just imagine a bunch of people winning the chance to buy who wouldn't have chosen to enter the ballot but feel like they may as well book now, and another bunch of people wailing because they joined the mailing lists JUST because they desperately wanted to see this (for... some reason...) and lost out to the people who simply weren't that fussed. Don't worry if you're the latter group though, I wouldn't have chosen to enter the ballot off my own back, and I don't plan to book if it turns out I am one of the lucky winners. (I've seen it before and I'm super busy during this run.)

If I was being cynical, I'd assume the entry process is designed to recapture all the people who didn't stay subscribed to their mailing lists during the GDPR cull a couple of months ago.

Seems a lot of effort to go to - after all, the people who unsubscribed to those emails were highly unlikely to be actually reading them! And they can't sell the data on to anyone else, I believe.

Give me strength. Ticket sales floundering in the heat are they? Ooo let's make it sound really exclusive. A ballot. Like bloomin' Wimbledon. It's a play. People buy tickets if they want to see it. End of.

Indeed, and besides, I hesitate to pay £25 for a "proper" play, ie rather than a one-person performance, and of a reasonable length for the outlay and travel, so I won't be booking this even if I win.

I do hate ballots, but they’re usually for when there’s very few tickets available. Anyone know how large this studio space is?
I can’t imagine that there will be overwhelming demand - I’m another who is not terribly fussed and will probably not book even if I win.

Assuming it's in the same space as Michelle Terry and Rosalie Craig's thing on motherhood, it's the same basic shape and size as the Donmar, but the areas where seats would be are clear, so it's basically a black box space, and I wouldn't be surprised if they kept this production to "stalls" level only.

The problem with this sort of ballot is that it gives the impression theatre tickets are really hard to get which puts ordinary punters off trying for any shows.
Is Brendan Coyle really that much of a draw?

He would've been back when Downton was new, Mr Bates was everyone's unlikely heartthrob for the first season, but then he just became a garbage character, getting worse and worse as the whole thing progressed. I don't know on what grounds they're implying this is some exclusive theatrical event, 'cos I don't know that Conor McPherson is an automatic hot-seller either.

Bit of a weird one to be pegging as 'hot stuff'
I saw the play at The Other Room in Cardiff a year or so back. Nice enough for a short afternoon of theatre. Don't know I'd go much further out of my way for it though.
Also Mr Bates was just a bit creepy at times, but does have an appeal with a certain demographic I grant you (an American company I interned with auctioned off a carriage ride with him in Central Park as a fundraiser and I don't know who looked more scared of the winner him or the horse)

Hubby's been successful in the ballot. For £25, I'll give it a go.

How and when are they telling people? Just emails?

E-mail only. All tix are £25, seating unreserved and limited to 2 per booker. There's a link in the email which it says can be used to book tickets, but that just took him (well, me) to the standard page showing nothing available, so I had to call.
Tickets are apparently available until 10 August "or they have all been sold", so I imagine that they will email people in batches once they see what the take-up is (given that every newsletter subscriber is in the ballot, I suspect it might be lower than they expect).

Interesting, I heard today I was successful too. First time I looked at the booking page it said "returns only" but when I went back there were tickets for most dates.

I always miss out on such things which is a pity as I would have liked to see this.
I am a big fan and love "The Weir" will be interested to hear how this revival compares.

I suggest we parade up and down outside the Donmar with a "Where's my ticket" placard.....or possibly just sit at home quietly on the sofa, inwardly fuming! I too would have liked to see this one!
