At the moment Wicked is not selling tickets in the back section of the stalls or the back section of the circle. I believe Wicked are aware that they won't fill the capacity for a majority of performances, so certain sections are no longer being sold! Death Knell! Why dont the stick it in a smaller theatre?

They don't need to.
They will be making enough money with what they are selling.

It’s not very encouraging for the cast though is it, seeing vast swathes of unsold seats. Or for the rest of the audience because it must affect the atmosphere. A smaller house and some redesigned moments could bring a whole new feel to it.
I suppose the other question is what on earth they’d put in there in its place. Maybe get a fabulous huge Starlight Express revival in there!

I don’t see them moving anytime soon but if they did I guess they’d possibly bring the touring set into a smaller theatre, or a mix of the two sets.

I saw Wicked last night for the first time in about 15 years. I actually thought I was watching Lucie Jones so was surprised to find out later it wasn't her. 😂 Amy Webb was excellent. It's not a favourite of mine but enjoyed it enough on a £20 second row ticket thanks to an O2 Priority deal. Fiyero was a weak link for me - is he supposed to be some kind of heartthrob? He came across as a bit of a wet lettuce. I’ve always found the supporting characters in Wicked to be so pointless and poorly written, they are such thankless roles. I am amazed when people are debating here about who should play what outside of Elphaba & Glinda. So yes, Fiyero is a wet lettuce.

Some yes, some not so much. When they find something else in Fiyero he’s a great character. Adam Garcia had bucketloads of charm so was an actual Prince Charming. Liam Doyle was Prince Charming plus action hero with an A+ vocal. Samuel Edwards had a slightly goofy arrogance that worked. This new geezer is a disaster tbh, physically imposing but a total drip and vocally all over the place.

I can’t imagine any show wanting that Theatre. It’s so big .
Yes I agree, it can’t be encouraging for the Cast to look out onto rows and rows of empty seats .
Anyway, I hope Lucie feels better soon.

Amy Webb took over as Elphaba mid-show this afternoon from Lucie Jones (19th March, 2022). We can assume that Amy Webb will be on this evening also!
Grace Chapman was on as Nessarose last night and for both shows today also.

Half sold is still more than most other theatres at capacity, they will have recouped years ago and they probably have a decent rent deal given no other show would want a theatre that size. Staying where they are is a no-brainer.

When we sat in the front row a few weeks ago I turned round to look at the house and really couldn’t see the back of the circle. When the lights are down I bet the same is true of the stalls too.

They won't see past the first couple of rows which is why the fangirls are so desperate to be in the very front row (it doesn't count if the performers cannot see you)

I was at the matinee today, my first ever 'witch switch' show with Amy taking over from Lucie after the interval.
If Lucie was poorly then she covered it BRILLIANTLY, her first-half performance was faultless and she showed no signs of struggling at all. TWAI and DG were properly belted so she did really well if she was suffering.
And Amy was also fantastic. In a weird way it was fascinating seeing the two portrayals in the same show, it's never happened to me before.
Glinda, Morrible and the Wizard all excellent.
Flyers....how the hell did he get the job? Decent enough voice but the man cannot act. The only weak link in an otherwise fantastic cast.

I saw someone on twitter say that Amy got switched in after Popular, not during the interval. Not that I don’t believe you but are you sure it was definitely Lucie up to DG? I guess maybe they got it wrong!

No it was definitely Lucie up to and including DG. They then announced the change prior to Thank Goodness starting 😁

robertb213 I’ve just seen a second tweet from someone who seems to have been at the same matinee congratulating Amy on her Defying Gravity! Are you absolutely sure they didn’t swap in Amy mid-act without you even knowing? I know when witch switches happen they’ve often been just after Popular, where the 1st Elphaba will run off as she does after Glinda calls her beautiful and then the replacement Elphaba turns up for the beginning of the classroom scene, and they would do this without an announcement as to not disrupt the performance.

I would've put my money on it being Lucie up to DG, it definitely sounded and looked like her until then, and Amy has a slightly deeper voice and acting style which was noticeable from her WWOTE scene with Nessa. But I guess I could be wrong.

I've just listened to an Amy Webb DG on YouTube, I am 100% convinced that Lucie stayed on for all of Act 1 and then Amy took over from Act 2.

So for a "witch switch" happening pretty seamlessly, does that mean the standby is ready every performance, greened up ready to go?

So for a "witch switch" happening pretty seamlessly, does that mean the standby is ready every performance, greened up ready to go? Sentimental Men podcast talked about the switch taking place after popular, no matter how early the original witch pulls out, to allow them time to greenify. The original Just has to push through until then. This is what they said for Broadway anyway.

So for a "witch switch" happening pretty seamlessly, does that mean the standby is ready every performance, greened up ready to go? No, usually the principle Elphaba will tell the stage manager they’re not going to be able to finish the show and they’ll decide where the switch will be to give the standby enough time to get ready. Sometimes it’s after Popular, sometimes it’s during One Short Day, etc. It really just depends where the show is. The principle Elphaba will push through until the standby is ready to go then they’ll switch out. Getting a standby ready for a show can take up to ten minutes in an emergency situation. I’d highly recommend reading Unnaturally Green by Felicia Ricci, it’s her account of being an Elphaba standby. It goes into great detail about the casting and rehearsal process and then what it’s like to actually be a standby and be called up in the middle of a performance.

I was at the show Wednesday night, finally managing to see Lucie on my third try. The stalls were half-full at best, the side blocks of the back section were completely empty and the ones at the front were pretty sparse too. It all felt a bit flat before the show even started! The sound was really abysmal and really lets down the great performances the cast are giving. I was side stalls, I believe people have complained about the sound from here before. None of the numbers were anywhere near loud enough. Lucie sounded brilliant but it almost sounded like she was singing the songs in the next room. Elphaba’s big numbers should really fill the theatre and that just isn’t happening right now. I have friends who went recently that are studying Theatre production at GSA so know their stuff more than me and one said “you don’t expect it to be like a rock concert but at any musical you do want to feel like the music is all around you, not just coming from one section of the stage”. They can make the wizard head loud as f*ck so why can’t they amplify other important bits of the show like this! Next time I’ll probably sit centre front row, guessing the sound would be good there. I’m finding it hard to gather my thoughts on the new cast because I’m just so angry about the sound, it’s really not good enough from a show in it’s 16th year in the west end!
