Footage has appeared on that well-known video site of the new DG staging in Hamburg. I have to say I'm not impressed at all, it removes all of the power of that moment and just looks daft. London staging can remain as it is, thank you very much 😁 💚

Oh I don’t know, after hanging about (literally) for most of it she actually flies off stage over the audience to the strains of the final “OHHHH-OOOOOOOOW-WHOOOOOOOAAAAAAA”. Glinda looks to be wearing a pair of pink shorts AND there’s a revolve on that stage!

I can't get my bearing on if she's over the audience or not nor how high she is. The set itself for the song seemed tiny, judging from the revolve. Hopefully more clips will appear over time.

The power of DG is that change in lighting and her sudden vertical ascension, this new staging feels much less of a 'wow' moment. Very hard to tell from this video, I know, but it looks like she barely leaves the ground, until she awkwardly flies off at the end. Maybe it's better in person.
I do agree on the broom though, that's where the traditional staging doesn't work either - it's the broom that can fly, not Elphaba, so her flinging it around in her arms doesn't make sense as she'd be hanging off it! 🤣

I've got very attached to the choreography in defying gravity over the years. Elphie's character growth, the subtle completion of the costume, both pairs of hands on the broom, and the timing of that breakdown of the door and Glinda's capture to cover Elphie getting into the lift.
Does it NEED her to literally fly over the heads of the audience? I don't think so. There is a real power in her punching the air and the blackout. Spiderman antics are kind of obvious and cheap and very prone to mistakes that descend into farce very quickly. No fly shows miss something, true. But they can at least cover it and retain the energy of the song

Lucie has been auditioning for Elphaba for 11 years, with a few very close calls. Guess it shows you should never give up, trying to get something that you want ! Good for her to finally get it

Has anyone sat in the front side stalls seats for wicked at the Victoria Apollo? I’ve booked to sit in E37 but I read some reviews that said the speaker can drown out the vocals and I’m worried about not being able to hear the singing properly.
If you’ve sat in that area did you find this to be a problem? And if so did it interfere enough to be worth me trying to sell my current seat and buying a more expensive one?

I think the orchestra (particularly the percussion) is quite noticeably loud on that side. It doesn’t drown out the vocals too much though from what I remember.

Have you seen the show before? If yes, then it probably doesn't really matter, the speakers are loud but the vocals will likely still be audible enough and you won't miss that much from the blocking. Not enough to change to a more expensive seat unless you have the cash. If you haven't seen the show before, I would change to a more central seat even if further back.

Thanks for the response, I have never seen the show before but I do know the all the words to the songs so that should be fine. Do you know if it’s possible to change to a different seat without buying a new one? I have emailed the ticket company to ask if I could upgrade and pay the difference but from what I’ve heard it’s unlikely that will work.

The issue with sitting at the extreme sides if you haven't seen the show before is that you will miss some of the staging, particularly at the end. I can't recall which side is high numbers and which is low but one side will miss the very end moment due to ensemble being in the way (that might even be an issue on both sides actually, I've never sat close enough to the end of the row stage right to know). Given you haven't seen the show before, that would be a shame. If you bought from one of the official ticket sites then I would think there is no harm in popping in to the box office if you can, or else phoning ATG - you will have to request a callback but they are usually very helpful in my experience once they do phone back.

I bought my tickets directly with wicked and I think their ticket company is different to atg however I live nowhere near London so can’t go to the box office. Do you know if there’s a number I can call for the box office? I think the wicked official ticket partner is Ingresso so I’m assuming that means phoning atg wouldn’t work?

If they let me move seats I’ll have to chose between centre stalls Row E, D or M. Do you have any advice on which would be best bearing in mind I’m 5’ 3 lol?

The stage is low so that’s no issue, but the way the show is staged can sometimes have people onstage blocking your view. I’d go for whichever has the most central seat.

As much as I think Wicked might be a fun show to perform in, I do wonder why Lucie has been so singleminded in getting the part. She’s already a “name” in MT, will this project further her career?

Row M - the rake is practically non-existent in the very front stalls and you get a better overview of the spectacle further back.

It's a great mezzo soprano part - a huge challenge as well as being high profile. Maybe nothing more to it than that.

Does anyone know why the matinee show on the 2nd of Feb has barely any tickets showing as available for it compared to other dates near it?

Yes the percussion on the left side of the stalls (to stage right) does always seem to be louder - not sure why that is, but it’s always been the case in the 15 years I’ve been seeing the show! You’ll be able to hear almost everything though.
