Ticket purchased. Recharging over a Wetherspoons breakfast now. How many people were there and what times? There were roughly about 30 people in line by the time the theatre opened. The main influx of people arrived from 8.30 onwards. We got there at about 6.30 and someone else got in line at 7, with a few others from 7.30. There looked to be tickets left by the time the queue ended.

I’ll post a full review in the morning but, it was brilliant! The show is in fine form, and the current cast is strong. Laura and Helen were on fire, and the ensemble were very energetic and perky, even 6 months into the contract. New Boq was lovely, as was Kim as Madame Morrible

Ok, time for a full review.
That could quite possibly be one of the best physical shows of Wicked I’ve seen. I last went at the 2018-19 cast change and I was ready for a new energy, and this current cast have so much of that energy.
Laura was Elphaba for the first time for me, and she was absolutely brilliant. No riffs, but just a strong mixed belt and smooth vocals. It just made for a really nice take on those songs and her voice sounds so much more powerful in the theatre than on audios I’d listened to. Her acting was great too, she delivered some lines totally differently to any other Elphaba I’d seen, e.g. “maybe the pronunciation of your precious name”, she imitated Glinda on “precious name”.
I had seen Helen as Glinda three times in tour which makes this my fourth time seeing her, and honestly she was living her best life. I was worried she would have gotten bored of the role after so long but you just couldn’t tell at all, everything she did was co-ordinated for Glinda, and she had one of the funniest Populars I had seen.
Alistair was a great Fiyero. I didn’t really take to his acting AS much, but his voice is gorgeous and his verse of ALAYM almost sounded angelic.
So great to have Kim back as Morrible, her facial expressions are fantastic and she’s even brought in some new acting choices, eg she doesn’t scream “a change in the weather” anymore, she simply says it normally, as if changing the weather is something that normally happens to make herself look innocent..
Nick was adorable as Boq, he looks so young and his voice and acting choices are great for the role. He and Natasha Ferguson worked well together.
The ensemble hasn’t lost any of their energy, it felt like a first night with the amount of energy coming from them. Being front row, you notice so much in the ensemble, eg in the ballroom, Glinda’s two friends whisper when she tries to go to Elphaba “Glinda, get away from her. Come dance with us babe”
Ok, this turned into quite an analysis of Wicked, but it was honestly brilliant and the show is in great hands with this cast.

Do we think a standby will be appointed between now and CC? When Natalie Andreou left the show they relied on their understudies for the remainder of the contract (albeit, this was a shorter time frame).

Laura only has a couple of weeks holiday left to take so maybe they will make do
Thursday 30 Jan - Saturday 1 Feb Monday 13 - Wednesday 22 April Thursday 4 - Saturday 6 June
That would probably change if one of the Elphana understudies got ill.
They'll have some green girls on speed dial just in case I'm sure.

The programme is a bit of a mess. They’ve made a new design, but Nikki is still listed as lead which means there are permanently standby slips in for Laura. Also, Carina has been put back in as Nessarose with Natasha’s name removed, but Carina is still out so Natasha has a standby slip too. Nicholas is in it as Boq though.

They must have already produced new programmes ready when Nicholas joining, but at that time they didn’t know Nikki was leaving.
Interesting they’ve removed Natasha from the programme, this must mean she’s due to leave shortly and Carina is coming back. It must be nearly 2 years since she last performed at the AV.

It will be very strange to see Carina back in the chair again after so long.

Rebecca Gilliland has tweeted that she will be Elphaba from Thursday to Saturday this week.

She also replied to someone saying that she is not going to be the standby, which makes me think someone is lined up for the remaining dates. Or they're doing what they did in 2017-18 when they just went one Nessarose short and had an extra swing.

Had a day off yesterday and was in London anyway for Les Mis in the evening so decided to go to the Wicked matinee - 40 quid on GILT for a 65 row F stalls seat. Hadn't been for ages and thought be nice to see it again.
So I was on my own and the theatre must have been about 80% school trips - they were EVERYWHERE! I guess more fool me for going midweek matinee. I had 4 rows of 10 ish year old lads sat directly behind me which I actually find a bit intimidating when you're on your own. They were so roudy, high on sugar and couldn't keep still. Fortunately as the lights went down I was able to move across to the centre stalls block row F as it was completely empty. It really did get me thinking though - couldn't all schools be kept in the same area rather than dotted all over auditorium? Also do they normally get top price seats? Obvs I wouldn't begrudge them a decent view - if they were actually concentrating!
Anyway - the show itself. It really is a great musical. I think over the years my enjoyment of it has been marred by the fact that the audiences tend to be fangirls, generally rough, or in this instance schools. Also is commercial hell in there - with ATG desperate to sell you overpriced rubbish at every turn. BUT the show itself is really good. Large orchestra, strong cast, great book.
Also got me thinking - do people classically think of Wicked as a mega-musical? I didn't. But I really thought yesterday I should. The scale and design of the sets is awesome.
It's also always nice to be in the Apollo Victoria as it reminds me of my many happy trips to Starlight Express!

I was debating doing a last minute payday treat to Wicked tonight. Looked online and they are selling the remaining dayseats for over £70 a pop! How long have they been doing this for?
I haven't been to the show in a few years - You used to be able to get the remaining dayseats (if there were any left) for dayseat price online.
Outrage haha

do they normally get top price seats? Obvs I wouldn't begrudge them a decent view - if they were actually concentrating! Groups get put in the worst of the top price seats nowadays - hence they were in the side blocks. Hard to put groups in a single place as there are so many agencies here and abroad bringing them in. Even if they have allocations, if they need more, they are going to get them, as a rule. Thanks. Explains why same as the GILT seats I guess.... Though I still think theatres should have a way of warning the single booker if they are gonna literally be sat on edge of a group of 50! (Obvs they never would......)

I've only been in a group trip to the West End once - Lion King - and we were at the back of the stalls, which I understand are the top price band of the non-premium seats.

Maybe check TodayTix? They MIGHT have some of their daily dozen left, but it tends to go quite quick now.

The AV has been looking a bit sad and tatty lately. The green LEDs have been turned off for weeks, and several lights on the “Apollo Victoria” logo have gone, alongside the lights on the big Wicked marquee.

It’s really annoying I hope they get it fixed soon because it’s so nice walking towards it all green and beautiful

I hope she stays on in July, I've been wanting to see her for a while but I don't have the time/money to be back before cast change.

Judging by this Twitter post it looks like we can expect some new press shots featuring Laura ...
I really hope they have done one for Amy Webb too!
