They ain't giving a song to Boq or Nessa, I imagine it'll be given to Elphaba or Glinda. I do think they'll probably cut or rework some of the songs like Something Bad which could just be dialogue, the Wizard songs probably either be trimmed, I could see them keep Wonderful but cut Sentimental Man.

There will be a new song if they want the song Oscar. The roles of Elphaba, Glinda and Morrible are Oscar nomination gold, if performed right!
... get Meryl in for the role, she is incredible in everything and gets nominated at least once every two/three years!
I don't know enough about the show, all I was saying is they can't be nominated for Best Original Song, unless they write a new one. Not so sure about the Score Oscar.

I think the general rule of thumb, with the Oscars, is as you say, a new song has to be included to get a nomination for Best Original Song. In terms of Score, I don't think it can be nominated? Unless it is significantly different, which I doubt, with the popularity of the show, it will be.

I'd love Christine Baranski as Morrible. Ok I'd love to see Christine Baranski as everything everywhere always. For Elphaba, Glinda and Fiyero would be nice someone unexpected.

Yes Natalie hasn't actually had the best of runs as Standby, it always seems when Emma is off for a number of runs Natalie is out of the show - that said its a great run for the understudies, I don't ever remember a time when they got this many rides of the broom! Wicked are certainly getting their money worth from their third and fourth covers this contract. Still makes me mad that Jennifer Tierney did not get even one show as Elphaba when she covered the role.

I struggle to see how they can keep Dorothy out of this though. It's fine on stage because we know what happens in between scenes. But a movie will need to be completely self contained - and that means Dorothy, water buckets and dodo. Will they negotiate the use of ruby slippers, I wonder? I think they could negotiate the ruby slippers with Warner Bros, Dorothy could easily be a mentioned but not seen character. The bucket scene could easily be done by just showing it from Glinda's perspective

It will be interesting if they take any elements from the book that aren't in the show to make the screenplay a little bit stronger for the screen rather than the stage? I personally love the book of the musical, but can see where some of it can be built further.

The bucket scene could easily be done by just showing it from Glinda's perspective I disagree, obviously. In a movie you can't this unseen character murder your protagonist. I can see them holding off revealing her until the very last minute, but let's not forget Elphaba kidnaps and imprisons Dorothy - there are going to things they can't explain away by having the audience fill in the blanks with the known story - it's not how movies work. I see no good reason why they can't do it exactly like in the musical and show it from Glinda's perspective. It's still a prequel so it's only reasonable that the audience has to "fill in the blanks". I've taken some friends who had never seen the wizard of oz to see wicked and they had no trouble understanding the story. The fact that Elphaba gets melted by a bucket of water thrown by a female child is mentioned in the very first scene

I wouldnt say any of the roles are obvious oscar contenders. Its quite a light musical and moving it to screen will emphasise that unless they strengthen the story. Its basically a chick flick with songs. Compare wicked to most oscar nominated roles and there isnt much comparison Glenn close, kate winslett, michelle pfieffer all would.make great morribles. Please someone other than meryl streep again. Granted, the stage version doesn't appear to have many obvious moments where an actor will get to act their heart out in a clear GIVE ME AWARDS moment. Except perhaps Elphaba when she realises her world is crashing down around her and then gives us Defying Graity. Done right I dont see why this could get a best picture nomination. The release date alone indicates it'll be the studios main priority come Oscar season. Possibly although id say it might be more to do with them wanting it to be their big christmas movie. Christmas release dates are a big thing in america compared to here. We would probably get it in january

So next week Natalie M is on as Elphaba and Lauren James-Ray is on as Nessarose...
So if Lauren is sick and can't go on as Nessa, will we likely see an old Elphaba (Michelle Pentecost?) as I'm sure I saw somewhere Laura Emmitt is on holiday as well?

Michelle was there as Elphaba Standby last night and I am sure she will be next week too should her schedule permit.
Or else they may have to ask super fan from the front row to go on!

On the 13th I think it was, Laura Emmitt went to Ibiza for a holiday. So she may well be back?

Understudy-tastic show tonight according to West End Understudies...
Natalie McQueen for Elphie, Carina Gillespie as Glinda, Lauren James Ray for Nessa, Russ Walker is Dillamond and Sean Kearns is on for the Wizard!
Those swings will be working overtime! Would love to catch that show will be a great dynamic I think!

She always seems to get ill when it's her time to go on.
Have Wicked third and covers ever had so many shows? What an incredible opportunity for them.
