Also to add to the above no investor would ever throw money at a Crimp/Mitchell Production as a money spinner no matter who was in it. It’s just not that kind of work. (Also all those dildos eat into profits) That'a not entirely true. Maybe not a combination of the two. Cate Blanchett did bring Big and Small abroad with the Sydney Theatre Company What part of Crimp/Mitchell is so hard to understand as “the two of them” Also why is everyone so obsessed with whether this is a commercial production. It’s not. It’s an NT Production. That isn’t the point of the NT. Even the “big” Broadway transfers, yes like Angels because obviously I know the ins and outs of that one, aren’t designed to make money. The only money spinners actually in recent decades have been more happy accidents- I mean who knew puppet horses would make a mint, who knew the world would lose its collective sh*t for James Cordon larking about etc etc But nobody looked at Katie Mitchell or Crimp’s work and said “ah that’s where I make my money” ever. That’s not why or how either of them work...which is why the NT are the place producing their work. As for Ms B from what I understand (not knowing the woman) she likes to mix up big Hollywood stuff with indie arts stuff that speaks to her as an artist. This, for the however many time, being the latter. It’s not a play everyone loves, but it’s far from a flop because it wasn’t designed to set the West End of fire. |

In a similar way "Big and Small" didn't transfer to the West End or Broadway and was clearly never going to. The play is EXACTLY what anyone familiar with Crimp and Mitchell's previous work (or with the ability to use google) would have expected. This appears to be how Blanchett chooses to run her theatre career and good luck to her! Would people be happier if she'd been cast as Del Boy in the Only Fools and Horses musical? I suspect this will have a life beyond the Dorfmann, but at places like Avignon Theatre Festival, the Sydney theatre company Blanchett has a relationship with, and BAM in Brooklyn, not a commercial transfer. And I would think this was always the plan. Even doing the play on a smaller scale cost money. Which is how they brought Big and Small abroad. |

The same part where you couldn't understand, "Maybe not a combination of the two." Do you know who Cate Blanchett is? That's who they would be investing in. Cate was bringing in one million dollars a week in her first Broadway production....which was not a great play. |

Hi all - I have given my tickets to a friend as I can't make this now. Are they actually checking ID on entry to the auditorium? I went on Saturday and was ID checked but I'm 19 so maybe they were a little suspicious? Ah - ID checked when you collected or when you actually entered the auditorium? |

He really hated Johnny Depp - I have mixed feelings about Mr Depp but he alternates big Hollywood movies with lending his star weight to indie/quirky films with presumably low budget (Dead Man, The Libertine etc.). I think the issue in this case was the way it was promoted, with the ballot story all over the press, and before that the way her name had been linked with All About Eve which was obviously the more publicly/commercially appealing project (though does involve playing an actress who is going 'over the hill' - so maybe taking the sexier, indie role isn't just about the quality / provenance of play itself!). Tortured is a sell out despite the reviews - when tickets pop up online they're gone again within minutes. |

Why can we not accept that CB likes doing ‘experimental’ theatre and see that for the National they have a sell out in their small Theatre which in reality is the minimum they require.
As previously stated I think it is very brave of her and would have been a lot easier to do a ‘Classic’, the Theatre is full meeting the requirements of the National and she is doing what she wants meeting her requirements.
If we think subsidised Theatre is only there for the ‘mainstream’ then to me hat is a different discussion.
The only negative was the ballot which I hope they never repeat.

Well, I finally managed to get to see it yesterday. I loved it (but past experience suggested that I would anyway, as previously mentioned). Acting, design, script, all as good as I had hoped. I was transfixed and the time just flew by, for me.
The whole ballot farrago was the big mistake and, as others have said, not something that should be repeated.

They let me use my university ID so they don't seem to care what kind of ID as long as it has your name on it. |

I don't think her plan was to do experimental theatre just for the people of the UK. Whyever not? Lots of famous actors have done just that over the years - and in smaller theatres than the Dorfman/NT, too. Sometimes not many people getting to see it is part of the appeal. It allows a certain freedom to cut loose and try something different. |
