Mainstream critique nowadays is out of touch and obsolete anyway. Who cares.

Well, this one left me completely cold. I just couldn't engage at all. Too much going on on stage all the time and I just couldn't connect or care for any of the characters. There's a lot of energy on stage and the audience seemed to enjoy it. I was really looking forward to see it, but I was very disappointed As much as I love the show I totally agree it rarely keeps still and is never silent!!!! My main issue with CFA is the pacing - it’s 100 mph then finishes. Surprised the reviews weren’t better though!

A lot of the reviews from New York were similar. This is a show that audiences love, not necessarily critics.

This is a show that audiences love, not necessarily critics. Yes, that happened with another flop - Les Miserables.

I’m surprised and shocked. I think British arts journalists are intent on killing anything good that happens to our industry. I’m surprised but not shocked, because when you have a heartfelt and feelgood show like CFA, or course some critics can’t handle that! 🙄 I think what bothers me is that it probably has as many 3 star reviews as 9 to 5, and that just doesn’t feel right! lol

This show is strong enough to hold up on the back of good word of mouth, it deserves to run and run and run.

But only 3* from the Telegraph. I am surprised that such a warm, uplifting show, in such gloomy times, but one which also packs such a huge emotional wallop, has not touched the hearts of the critics more. I have to say that I totally got the sense of dread, anxiety and discombobulation of the 'plane people' and their new friends so I would have to totally disagree with Dominic Cavendish on this one. It was far from just a fun-time hooley, as the gorgeous Something Missing confirms, which isn't mentioned in his review.

Goes to prove you can never second guess the critics!! Saw similar with Once and Book of Mormon.
Dominic Cavendish the old terminal brig, gave Kinky Boots two stars.

I'm shocked and appalled at the reviews. If there's anything that shows how out of touch these mainstream newspapers reviewers are, it's this.

I thought that we were trying not to be shocked or appalled when people have a different opinion from us? How about ‘a bit upset’ or ‘don’t understand how’? If you set an example with such emotive language surely only ‘outrage’ and ‘anger’ will follow? 🤣

Reviews are only one person's opinion, I would have thought that was obvious...
I expect I will love this show as it's my kind of musical, but I hope this thread isn't going to turn into another one where some people make those who dislike it afraid to post their opinion. People are allowed to dislike this show as well as love it!

I’m awaiting confirmation of face melting rock ballads, glowing eyed bats and cars crashing into the pit before getting really cross.

Try starting with upset or ‘a bit sad about’ and work up from there. 😊

3* from The Guardian and Daily Mail. Too hearty (whatever that means) and nice, apparently. And it wasn't even Quentin Letts! I don't know what the Guardian's beef is but the DM probably doesn't like the fact that everyone is nice to each other because sowing hatred is, y'know, their MO.

It’ll be because those sentimental Yanks liked it and the steel edged, finger on the pulse Guardian can’t be doing with concepts like ‘joy’ ‘empathy’ or ‘understanding. No agenda obvs.

I promise, everyone, you'll be much happier when you learn to stop taking a theatre critic's lukewarm response to a show you loved as a personal slight. Honestly, the way some people talk, you'd think they had a cast-iron responsibility to love all the shows and it's a betrayal of the very medium of theatre itself for them to just not get on with one.

To be honest, I can't remember the last time I even read a theatre critic's review. That's how much they matter.

I think once the show queens have all seen this that the reviews will actually matter and this show will struggle.
It has no stars, and as others have said , not based on a tv show or film.

But word of mouth and social media is everything these days. People read Facebook more than they do theatre critics. That’s where CFA will win and succeed.
