God I love this show. Tonight was my second time after seeing it on Broadway in March and pretty much everything from my OP is still true.
However, I overall preferred the Broadway cast - with one exception: Florence Andrews is a much better Ms Mullins than Sierra Boggess. Gary Trainor was a good and believable Dewey (I must admit, I was sceptical after seeing him as Donnie Kirshner in Beautiful but he won me over quickly), but I did prefer Alex Brightman's take on the role. And while the London kids were good (some outstanding, but some only average), their Broadway pendants were exceptional.
Nonetheless, I'll be back. I want to see David Fynn's Dewey and, if somehow possible, Rosanna Hyland's Ms Mullins.

Oh Michael.....how has this happened....I was at the show too! We appear to have had the exact same schedule yesterday and not known it both times..... Show wise....I loved it. The kids brilliant....Gary fantastic and I find it hard to believe the lead guy would be better. Inctedibily fun and entertaining. One of best shows in the west endfor me. |

I don't think he said "first female president" - just said she could run next month and he would vote for her? Tonight he said both. She could be the first female president and that he'd vote for her if she ran next week. Fingers crossed they'll have to change this line after Tuesday. Funnily enough, I noticed a little 'easter egg' in the show regarding the presidential election. In the classroom, on the blackboard I spotted there was a poster featuring all American presidents with their name and photo. Hillary was on this poster, next to Obama!  |

That performance on The One Show was bad. Didn't like the lead guy and the kids hit some real stinking notes. Pretty much confirms what I've been hearing out of previews- the cast isn't that great

The cast seemed great to me, but i didn't get the lead, i got the alternate who was brilliant. All night i only ever heard one obvious nasty note from a kid.
Also, they are kids.

The kids played their instruments well, but weren't that good vocally. E.g. the girl playing Tomika: She's supposed to knock your socks off when she sings Amazing Grace, but was just "nice". The Broadway Tomika was miles ahead. Summer was great though. (Yes, I do know that they're only kids, but they wowed me on Broadway) Didn't find the adult cast bad (as HereForTheatre, I haven't yet seen the lead Dewey so can't comment on him), but, apart from Florence Andrews' Ms Mullins, I preferred their Broadway counterparts. I'm back at the end of December, so will be interesting to see how they've settled in. |

Yes, the girl who played Summer was very talented wasn't she. The best of the kids for sure.
But also don't forget that there are 3 or 4 casts of kids, some are bound to be weaker than others. You basically have he best of the best on Broadway.
Also, it's still in previews. They have all only been doing it a couple of weeks.

Child labour laws in the US aren't the same as the UK although Disney shows like Mary Poppins, Newsies etc had more than one child alternate the child role and shows like Matilda, Billy Elliot had multiple children in the lead role on Broadway as the role due to it being more demanding etc they do have understudies for the kids on School of Rock on Broadway IIRC. |

Saw this last night. Gary Trainor is amazing. Really nails the comedy. Florence Andrews is just OK as Mullins. The kids were amazing.
This is just a fun show. Would totally recommend.

Yes.. and I've heard many kids in many shows sing in tune and well. No evidence of that in that performance. The kids in NY were incredible- obviously having to find 3 teams here has meant singing has taken a lower priority than being able to play the instruments. I'm going tomorrow night so I'll see for myself I guess. The cast seemed great to me, but i didn't get the lead, i got the alternate who was brilliant. Wow is the actual lead guy EVER on? Why is the understudy doing all of these shows already? In fairness Alex Brightman was off many time on Broadway. You've being going to theatre for many years like myself, when you go tomorrow you will see how physical demanding the role is, the show lasts 2:30 and I tell you Dewey Finn is on stage for 2:29 of that. In a day where you get alternates for being on stage for 10 minutes, the boys ain't doing bad. |

Didn't get a picture but from the programme I can put names to faces Katie - Selma Hansen Billy - Logan Walmsley Tomika - Adithi Sujith Freddy - Jude Harper-Wrobel Lawrence - Oscar Francisco James - Sonny Kirby Mason - Lucas Chow Shonelle - Jaydah Bell-Ricketts I believe Summer was Eva Trodd and Zack was Toby Lee but not completely sure on those. Couldn't really figure out Marcy, Sophie or Matthew As for the adults we had pretty much the main cast except for Joel Montague on as Dewey Finn and Alfie Parker on for Stanley/Mr Williams |
