Finally managed to see this today. I didn't have any strong expectations before hand, and came out thoroughly impressed.
Refreshing to see a reasonably simple staging of a musical, a few subtle nods to other pieces and a very well constructed book.
I wasn't expecting to find it as moving as I did. I'll load a lot of that down to the fact I'm a teacher who has worked on school musicals before, but it takes a lot to fully draw me into a musical enough for that to happen.
Also really encouraging to see such a full and youthful audience. Plenty of (well behaved) kids, families, young couples, etc.
Long may it run.

I can only apologise for my over use of the word 'currently' 😂 I did not proof read before I posted! Show stop only lasted about 10 minutes though you would have thought it was about 10 hours from the man next to me complaining!! Apart from that it was a great afternoon, highlight for me was Claudia Kariuki as understudy Miss Mullins, having seen her 4 and times in Wicked it was great for me to see her in a more leading role - such an impressive voice !! First time seeing the show since it first opened and I'd forgotten just how enjoyable it is!! |

I was wondering if there were any show nearer to them for an outing. I’m so spoilt in London, wouldn’t think of going that far without a stop over or other stuff to go to.

It doesn’t usually take 5 hours to get to London from Newport, it’s closer than Cardiff. Must have been terrible traffic today I guess? |

I don’t suppose a tour would ever be viable given the challenges with child casting. I really enjoyed the show but a lot of that was down to those brilliant kids. Id love to see it tour but I wouldn’t want to see it compromised as a result of having to use teams of local kids who practically couldn't be rehearsed to the same standard.

The kids need to act, sing AND play an instrument though. There aren’t going to be as many of those available presumably so the standard potentially drops.
And I’d say the kids in SOR are much more front and centre than the ensemble of Matilda who were just generic ‘kids’ to me (sorry Matilda fans,)
Maybe it could work if the tour was for long sit downs in major cities.

Extended to 5th April 2020. That's good news. Thought it might be struggling based on a substantial discount offered me last week by LW Theatres on tickets from late August till mid October. Needless to say it worked, immediately booked front row seats for daughter and I. I've seen it four times already but it will be the first time for my daughter and there's a new Dewey Cox - Noel Sullivan ex Hear Say - taking over from Monday 19 August. |

I'll very happily go back and see the new cast with Noel however his casting did strike me as a little unusual. He's rather slimmer than the traditional Dewey. Good for him though, I've always rated him highly.

Where did you decide to sit in the end, lynette ? Sorry for not answering sooner. We sat in the middle section on the right facing, aisle seat. That is me on the aisle. It was perfect, excellent view with very good rake. Suitable for all ages. But pricey. I am not clever about getting bargains I'm afraid so paid full whack. We were surrounded by the Welsh primary school which behaved impeccably with a few toilet exits, not disturbing at all. I like to think my paying full price may have subsidised the school rate. |

Went along to see this last night, having only ever having seen it once, soon after it opened in New York. I remember being impressed by the talented children there, but not particularly being grabbed by the overall show.
Had a great experience from centre second row Stalls, booked during an offer period. Only two seats (directly in front) on the first row were taken. Not sure if that row is usually day seats. Still, a perfect view as the second row is raised and a much better view than the front row would have been.
The people in the front row ended up moving to the side by a few seats in the interval. It may have been because they were too close, but also Noel Sullivan's spit did reach that range quite a few times.
Speaking of Noel Sullivan. I hadn't twigged he was in this and didn't immediately recognise him, as he's gained weight and a beard for the role. He did a good job. I'm not sure this show quite had the energy as in New York, but it must be tough with three different casts of children. The ones I saw were great, although I was slightly surprised that it wasn't as diverse a selection as New York. But again, there must be constraints based on which children match the required ability with musical instruments.
The way the stage and set is constructed, the front rows shake in time with the big dance numbers taking place on the stage.
The audience wasn't too bad. Mixed ages, many of them rather inclined to chat (it seemed more like the parents engaging the children in conversation than the other way around). Some school parties in. Overall, not too full, but this has been running for a while now.
It is a fun night. Some decent songs. Very different to most ALW musicals. I suspect it will close sometime next year, but it should have a life as a touring production.

I saw this the night before last and I thought Noel Sullivan was an excellent Dewey Finn, the best I’ve seen. His acting and diction in particular meant I heard ,lines in the show I’d never heard before, he was very endearing and had great chemistry with the kids and the actress playing Ms. Mullins. I’ll definitely be back before Noel leaves to see it again.

Saw this today and also thought Noel Sullivan was the best Dewey I've seen. His spontaneous laughs with the kids on stage show a very human side to the character. Shame about the front row groupies/parents/carers who need the whole theatre to know that they KNOW the whole show. Their mouthing of lyrics and seat dancing kind of spoils it for the uninitiated.

I've read someone say they cancelled the recent auditions for new kids.
Apparently ALW will be replacing it with another of his shows.
It's a great show but I wouldn't mind seeing something new.

I wonder if Cinderella might go here or if they'll replace it with something like The Boy in the Dress or a Broadway transfer like Ain't Too Proud or Hadestown. |

^I think had Cats not had the runs at the Palladium in 2014 and 2015, they'd probably be demand for it.
