It's basically just the story of her life turned into a musical. I saw it on Broadway and absolutely loved it, but I was a HUGE Gloria fan back in the day so I was bound to love it. Even won a fan club contest to meet her backstage at her concert.  |

Saw this on Broadway, and like impossibleprincess73 absolutely loved it. A really great show and cast (as well as as an impeccably behaved audience compared to a UK one for a Jukebox musical). You get the obligatory megamix at the end as well! |

Always difficult to sell a show out of context on something like BGT but enjoyed it greatly.Dancers were great and it felt like the cast and Gloria were enjoying it.Hope the masses don’t presume that Gloria is actually in the show itself as I am not sure if this was made clear last night?

Yes, it wasn't made clear that Gloria is not in the show. I'm afraid (like so many others) the TV excerpt did nothing for me and hasn't tempted me to book for this. No doubt there will be offers though.

In the dress rehearsal now. The main thing I notice is the guy playing Emelio looks and sounds almost exactly like Zayn from One Direction. It's like he's doing an impression.

Note that this is all based on a dress rehearsal not a proper 'official' performance.
I didn't rate the first act but i really enjoyed the second act. That's when it clicked for me because at that point it become more a concert with just smaller inserts of dialogue and scene setting and it zipped along. For me the first act and how that was done just didn't really land and seemed a bit too slow and disjointed and it lacked something. 2nd act is where it's at. I mean it all does seem a bit self indulgent but i guess that's what you get with this type of show.
I don't wish to really rate performances because given that it was only a dress run you don't know how much individual cast members were really giving and if it was them at their best so it's unfair. But as i said above, the Emelio is literally Zayn from One Direction. Looks and voice. Well not literally, obviously.
The set was a big disappointment. Basically a back curtain and some sliding panels that had various projections on. Then like a concert stage coming on and off for the band and performance scenes. I don't know if that is the same as other productions of the show.
The band, music, lighting and sound are excellent.
I did like it in the end.
Gloria was there.

I apologize in advance if it's in the thread already, but any hints that there will be Rush? I want to see the show in August so I am wondering if I should be getting some cheap tickets now or wait for eventual rush. (seeing 7 shows in 4 days, so money is a factor for me).

This will be nailed on for deals I would imagine especially at such a big venue.Can’t see it filling so many seats,day after day.Gloria’s songs won’t have the same pulling power as ABBA or MJ for example.

This isn’t exactly setting the box office alight. After Man of La Mancha too! This is really a barn of a theatre for musicals even for a limited run. Hopefully Hairspray with Michael Ball next year will have more success.

This sounds like the Broadway production, I remember props coming in like tables and chairs but most backdrops were projections. The band scene at the end of act two was pretty special I thought. |

It's a huge theatre compared to the 1600 at the Marquis, even if you make allowances for it being a limited season. I was front row in the Marquis for $99. Front row here was something like £149 when I checked earlier. |

I saw it at the wonderful Curve Theatre in a very wet Leicester on Saturday. Matinee, looked sold out. I travelled there from Kent because the equivalent stalls seat at the Coliseum was priced £150 when both venues went on sale last October. I paid £45 for front stalls plus £5 for a coach return London to Leicester. Moreover I could take in all the food or drink I wished with no hassle...
Thoroughly enjoyed it. Could be compared with the Tina Turner musical though more feelgood and less dramatic; calling it a jukebox musical would be a disservice. Loud, colourful, both leads perfect in their roles. Audience wildly enthusiastic. Deserved standing ovation.
It will struggle to fill its London venue (there are already discounts) but will do better there than MOLM and should sell well on tour.

Well it looks like they’ve spared every expense on the set. Is there anything at all to look at except the orchestra on platforms?
Claaaic example of broadway to London transfer where no money is spent.

I half enjoyed the show tonight. It really shone during the big dance numbers and the ensemble sounded terrific and they were fabulous dancers, the choreography is far better than the vocal arrangements which is a shame for a show about a singer. The actress playing the mother had a fabulous voice and so felt under utilised as she was the only one who could act a ballad.
The actor playing Emilio couldn’t pitch anything and near ruined the night for me.
The actress playing Gloria was so pretty and really did well in the upbeat numbers.
I hated the way the book skipped over major life events by giving them a line of dialogue as an almost afterthought.
I was sat front row and had a lovely view, still felt quite distant as the pit is so vast. I’d paid £35 for the ticket which felt right, I’d not have been happy at 80+
Overall I really enjoyed the dance numbers and that was enough for a goo night for me.

It's 100% scaled back from the Broadway production, I don't know if this is the touring production with less props or not, ready for the UK tour, but it's definitely scaled back. The water fountain is missing, which was featured in loads of Broadway press photos:  Lots of the background sets are missing too - there's no mezzanine stage:  and this scene was heavily stripped back to a stage and stairs from memory:  That said, I enjoyed it more than Broadway and thought it was better staged here! |
