We're seated D55 & D56. Any insight into our view? Side block but very close to the stage. You should be fine unless actors are standing in the way. All I'm interested in is being able to see and hear everything :3 |

Saw this tonight. I have to admit that I'm not a musicals fan and went in knowing little about it, but I found it weirdly flat. Maybe it was the music which didn't grip me the way the few musicals I have loved did. It felt like all the elements were right, objectively I could see the quality and the energy and the appeal, but somehow none of it engaged me.
PS please don't take photos of the set (except under specific circumstances and when invited to do so), stage designs are actually copyrighted so it's not legal to do so.

Saw it tonight -- oh dear: suffocatingly earnest and worthy, with beautiful music and the most LUDICROUSLY anodyne lyrics, almost any of which could be sung by anyone: these lyrics make Andrew Lloyd Webber's lyric collaborators look character-specific --- LOL. And a lot of it makes ZERO sense. The wall number is politically on point but why in god's name would the underworld have a wall? And so it goes -- near the end, Amber Gray asks Patrick Page if they should get back together and he says something like, we can't because it's spring; we have to wait until the fall.
Huh? Since when do lovers IGNORE the spring? makes me wonder what was going on at all these workshops and tryouts. they've got a lotta work to do -- like telling Page that growling ain't singing. And giving Eva and Reeve something to act rather than the most generic of swoony encounters that play like a bad Young Adult Novel. Her voice, tho', is terrific.

The wall number is politically on point but why in god's name would the underworld have a wall? 'Why we build the wall' was written around 2012, long before Trump was anywhere close to the White House or campaigning towards it. Whilst being very political relevant currently (at face value) it's lyrical content is probably a bit more less literal than should be taken at the root. If you look at the lyrics for the full song, what they're saying is they put a distance (a wall) between the enemy (poverty) to ensure their survival. It's about strength - as I perceive it at least. |

like telling Page that growling ain't singing. . My colleague who loved this said one of the actors is ‘doing’ Leonard Cohen - I guess that might be what the ‘growling’ is about. Looking forward to seeing this. |

Most of the songs involve repeating lyrics again and again
Usually the title of the song
It just amazes me
There are so many amazing pop and music songs out there
Think the likes of Cardi B
Stefflon Don
Etc
Vivacious and bum shaking stuff
Why do musicals
Have these aimless meandering dated scores
And dire lyrics
They are just embarrassing
And pathetic
Why doesn’t a major respectable
Music producer
One with street cred and proper credits
Write a musical
Imagine a sharp show scored by Missy and Kanye
Produced by Future
And Jay Z
Or a comedy musical
With songs by Adele and Ed Sheeran
(Neither of whom I like that much but they can both write a song)
The fact that Hadestown has been in development as some sort of idea for a decade or more
Is mind boggling

I left after 55 mins
I also saw White Teeth today
Which I thought was horrific

I think the assumption that if you like Once you will also like this is misplaced - I love Once but I hated this.
I found it dull, lacking in any chemistry between the leads, and with forgettable music (even though I do actually quite like jazz and folk) and dreadful lyrics. Very glad I only bought a cheap ticket as it really wasn't worth the money for me. Very muted reaction around me as well, and it was far from sold out.

These are just from 3 different press reviews
At least they have SOME sense and truth

Particularly when My post advises I saw White Teeth Which is 2h 30m And I stayed for the whole Show And I think we also have a record As the number of Duds at the NT Racks up even higher |

My 17 year old daughter, a fan of the Hadestown concept album, was thrilled when the NT announced this. She did warn me, however, that it probably wasn't my sort of thing but, as there was no-one else available for her to go to see it with, we trotted off to last night's performance. She was right. This was so not me. It reminded me of something from the 70s (a decade when I hit my teens) partly because Andre De Shields reminded me of Huggy Bear in Starsky and Hutch but also something about the declamatory tone of the piece. But, having said that, I thought it was well done and the audience around me (including my daughter) seemed to be lapping it up. And, unlike with the recent I'm Not Running, I wasn't sitting in my National seat wishing I could be just about anywhere else.
Bonus points for the trombonist Nathaniel Cross. One of my sons is quite a serious jazz trombonist so I know just how good that young man's playing is.

I saw it today and I thought it was nothing less than incredible. I can definitely get the Once comparisons but I also think that it had something unique. I would recommend it to pretty much everyone...
