Having seen the fantastic Regent's Park production just last summer, I can't get too excited about this as ﹰI dont think we need another outing of this so soon. I'm much more excited about West Side Story!

Having seen the fantastic Regent's Park production just last summer, I can't get too excited about this as ﹰI dont think we need another outing of this so soon. I'm much more excited about West Side Story! Last summer's production had an orchestra of 15. The proms concert will have a very large orchestra playing the original orchestrations. With this score, that's a huge deal. |

I am sure John Wilson will ensure that this is orchestrally top class, but I did see the Regent's Park version three times and thought the sound and performance of the orchestra was superb despite it being only 15 players, as indeed was the entire production under Drew McOnie. But I can well imagine that it will be very different at the Albert Hall, as indeed it was at the Barbican for the semi-staged concerts for the DGG recording under Michael Tilson Thomas with the full London Symphony Orchestra and a cast absolutely to die for. So I suppose the question here is really would it be preferable to have some other Bernstein musical in place of On the Town that hasn't been done so recently in London and as there will be a concert of West Side Story I guess that would have been a choice between Candide, Wonderful Town and 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Any takers for any of those instead of On the Town? |

Yes, that's more the point I was trying to make - we've had On The Town done recently and done very well, so why does it need repeating so soon as opposed to picking a different score? Personally I'd be much more interested if it was something like Candice, which I haven't seen recently. |

Thanks for the heads up. After seeing Candide at The Menier I fell in love with it. I'm not familiar with any of the cast. Are they more from opera background? |

Allen has done the show in concert before - and done it well.

Just a reminder to anyone booking LSO tickets for Candide (or anything else) that if you have an under 18 in your life they qualify for tickets for £5. It's a wonderful scheme which, with a daughter doing A Level music, we take advantage of a lot. So, for example for Candide her dad and my tickets are £41 while hers in the adjacent seat is a fiver.

Thanks folks for all that information. I didn't know the LSO had done Wonderful Town at the end of last year or are doing Candide in December or that the London Musical Theatre Orchestra had done Candide at Cadogan Hall (I'd better pay more attention to what's going on in London) so I guess that On the Town is a reasonable choice for the Proms, all things considered!
It is of course a terrific show and just because we had it last year done well in the Park is no reason why we shouldn't enjoy it this year under very different circumstances at the Proms.

Danny Mac was amazing but Miriam-Teak Lee was sooo good as Claire Yes, Stagey, those performers in the Park were great but if I may trot out one of my reminiscences, the cast at the Barbican for the semi-staged concert version that was recorded by DGG was actually sensational: Samuel Ramey ('I feel like I'm not out of bed yet' & Pitkin) Thomas Hampson (Gabey) Frederica von Stade (Claire) David Garrison (Ozzy) Tyne Daly (Hildy) Kurt Ollmann (Chip) Marie McLaughlin (Ivy) Evelyn Lear (Madame Dilly) Cleo Laine ('Ain't got no tears left') Meriel Dickinson ('I wish I was dead') Adolf Green (Narrator) Betty Comden (Narrator) Comden and Green, who wrote the book and lyrics and were both in the original stage cast, narrated the performance and I think Rosemary Ashe was in the chorus but I may be wrong about that. I think Michael Tilson Thomas, the conductor, also provided a few words as Rajah Bimmy. This was a case, unlike Bernstein's recording of 'West Side Story', where the opera singers turned out to be ideal for their roles and blended perfectly with the musical theatre performers. |

Rattle did a terrific performance of Wonderful Town at the proms about twenty years ago. The cast was more or less the same as his excellent EMI recording, i.e., Kim Criswell, Audra McDonald and Thomas Hampson with the CBSO. One of the best ever proms. |

I must confess I'm a tad disappointed it's the LSO and not the John Wilson Orchestra. I know there are a fair few players from the LSO in the JWO but I think the fact that the latter are hand picked means they play with great commitment and style for Wilson. He is such a talented conductor that he is bound to secure a classy performance from what is arguably London's best orchestra but I did hear him conduct a semi-staged performance of Singing in the Rain at the RFH a few years back. This was with The Phiharmonia Orchestra and good as they were, they were not in the same league as the JWO in this type of music.

I saw Jane Archibald as Zerbinetta at the ROH in 2015 & she's cetainly got the coloratura for Cunegonde. Leonardo Capalbo's name was vaguely familiar but I've not seen him so I looked him up when the cast was announced & amidst a fairly impressive CV he's played Candide on stage so presumably should be good. I booked for this concert the day booking opened, love the piece. I must confess I'm a tad disappointed it's the LSO and not the John Wilson Orchestra.
