So- after looking at the image for the Regents Park version of Little Shop in the Summer, am wondering what angle they are going for in the show? The image is very Frank n Furter meets Ru Paul’s Drag Race! I wonder if that is just an artistic choice for promotion or if it bears any resemblance to the production? openairtheatre.com/up/productions/image/349659059.jpg |

I love this show!
Personally I think it's artistic choice. I find it hard to believe that they would deviate too far from the well established story line.

When I first saw it, I assumed this was a darker take on the three girls rather than the plant.

I know what you mean- although not quite sure what they are trying to get across with the image. As one of my favourite ever shows I am looking forward to finding out!!

Maybe they're planning a puppet with the voice/puppeteer visible on stage? That's really all I can think of based on that poster

I recall reading about a production in the US where Audrey II was played by a drag queen who lip synced to another actor singing backstage All for the idea of a Audrey II being re-interpretted as a Drag Queen, but what do they gain by having an actor off stage doing vocals when theres a human there? Surely thats a odd way to cast it, just cast a DQ who can sing the role. I get that in the instance of a puppet being used an actor is required to voice it off-stage, but its seems like they didn't join the dots when casting and forgot that by replacing a puppet with a human they could elminate the need to lip-sync. Very odd. |

Interesting! Never heard of the drag queen version above before! Although I am all for reinterpretations in order to keep musicals fresh- I kind of feel that some of what makes Little Shop so wonderful is seeing a huge manipulated plant coming to life on the stage! Now a drag queen Dentist would be another thing 😀

My idea is maybe there will be the traditional plant puppet but then above on a platform you will see the performer who may be in drag, it does seem like an odd poster if they are not doing some sort of drag element in it.

Is that definitely drag, though? I thought the photo might just be meant to represent one of the victims as a converted tendril... i guess time will tell.
I keep checking their website daily for a casting announcement... after they did Into The Woods, this was next on my wishlist of "musicals I'd love to see at the Open Air", so whatever their choices I'm excited to see what happens.

Just booked this for on my birthday!. I’m only familiar with the film so to see a live production will be fabulous, whatever form it takes. Just a bit worried about getting lost in the park like I did last time when I went to see JCSS!

I just underestimated the time from The tube to the theatre and only just made it there on time last summer! |
