Another vote for "Martin Guerre", the London version (even though there many songs from the second, such as Live with Somebody You Love, and Without You as a Friend, that I really like).

A lot of people hate Martin Guerre. I loved it, but I was much younger when I saw it. Not sure what I'll think of it now if it's ever back. I too loved 'Martin Guerre' especially after the first lot of revisions. Great score, some fantastic staging and some of Bob Avians most affecting work. I listen to it regularly. |

Once on this Island - loved it at the Hackney Empire. Boy have I got good news for you! The Broadway production of pippin is currently in amsterdam until 10 April! I'm going on Sunday! |

Nine. Great tunes you can remember. The production at the Donmar about twenty years ago was fantastic. Loved it when the stage filled with water and all the cast donned their wellies!
And a vote for Pippin (another great production at the Menier that didn't seem to please everyone.)

Most of the show is set in Venice. The Broadway revival with Antonio Banderas also featured a shallow pool of water.

It's not underrated but Grease gets a lot of slack due to poor productions but it can be really good when done well.

I always liked The Rothschilds. They stripped it down off-Broadway in the 90s but still prefer the original 1970 version.

A vote for Love Never Dies. Beautiful score, ruined on stage by poor concept and design. Needs resurrecting some day when ALW can't interfere... Agree...far better than Phantom. |

The Hunting of the Snark. Ground-breaking for its time I think. Napoleon. So sad that this closed so quickly. I listen to the soundtrack often and think it’s very beautiful and moving. Lend Me a Tenor. I only went to see this because the tickets were cheap and there was nothing else I wanted to see on at the time. Both my friend and I were in hysterics throughout – loved it! I thought it was so funny, especially the surtitles in Facciamo L'Amor, and May I have a moment?
The Drowsy Chaperone. So funny and clever, and also touching. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. I realise I’m in a minority here, but I LOVED this. So quirky, original and different to anything else I’d seen. I was in floods of tears by the end and had a very long post-show conversation with my friends about whether the two leads made the right life choices and were truly happy in the end. Yes yes yes to Napoleon. A really good score given 24 carat orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick. Shame about the dodgy lyrics, though. Zambello also doing some of her better work. One of my favourite Shaftesbury flops. Also thought Umbrellas of Cherbourg was magical. Flawed, for sure, but I had tears in my eyes at the end - so refreshing and true to life, and brilliantly staged with the set turning into Soho. Another vote, too, for La Cava, which was really compelling and thrillingly staged. Good story, some good songs. A proper tragedy. UPDATE: the pianist in my hotel reception is playing "I Will Wait for You" from Umbrellas. Spooky! |

Listening to both cast recording tonight prompted me to think that The Scottsboro Boys is certainly underrated....it was a magnficent show, powerful, crammed with tremendous rag and cakewalk songs, and superbly staged. An angry, well structured masterpiece.

Made in Dagenham! I really enjoyed the show and although it wasn't the best it was still enjoyable!
I think the problem was that they went into a huge West End theatre first. They could've tried it out somewhere else or even started in a smaller theatre like the playhouse or Phoenix.

From what I've heard there's definitely another Spice Girls musical on the way. Whether that ends up being a Viva Forever revival or something new, I don't know.

I really enjoyed it, I saw it twice and it was a completely different show both times, and I had a lot of fun! Sure it needs work, but it was a good night out for what it was.

I've always been intrigued by Viva, so I'd definitely be up for seeing it or a reworked Spice Girls musical if it ever happens! As some of the Spice Girls music is epic!
