Woman on a Verge Nervous breakdown for me. I just thought it was messy and came to westend bit to quick. I never thought I would ever hear someone call Women on the Verge overrated... I liked it a lot but found it severely underrated.
It didn't deserve to leave as soon as it did in London.

Adding my voice to the Book of Mormon - do not understand the obsession with this show at all.
Interested that with all the discussion of sexism, Grease hadn't come up. Am I the only person that thinks Grease is one of the most sexist shows to exist? Not even sure if sexist is the right word - it just gives such a bad message to women, it shocks me that schools still put it on!

I don't think Grease is sexist but the satire of 50s High School culture have been diluted due to the film and revivals.

It's a shame, as I actually quite like some of the music, and if it wasn't for the ending I might really like the show. Having said that, I've only seen bits of the film - I might feel differently if I watched it properly or saw a stage production. |

I hate Grease for this very reason - the ending where the main female character just changes her entire personality to get a man - urgh. I find the 'old' Sandy much cuter than the 'new' Sandy. |

Although maybe not overrated I didn't like Bend it Like Beckham at all! I thought it was really messy and just not a worthy west end show

I agree, I like it but it is way too overrated. I have never had the desire to see it live but I like the score.
Philippa Stefani is the only draw for me in this upcoming version!

I definitely loved RENT a LOT back in the day, but I fear that I'm going to come out of the upcoming tour thinking "but why DON'T they get jobs?". Maybe bohemian living was the thing in the '90s, but these days, only rich kids can afford to follow their passions without a day job to support them. I just hope they don't do it with too much crushing earnestness, and that I'll be able to enjoy it as a period piece.  |

There was a discussion earlier in the thread about cast recording and t\how well they do justice to the show.
I get most of theatre exposure through cast recordings, and some are magical (the first that springs to mind in 2013 Cinderella on Broadway- MAGIC! I could listen to it again and gain and even though it's edited I get full sense of the show) and some just don't work (Fun Home, for example, is a magic, tender, beautiful show, but I couldn't get through the cast recording once)
I wonder what makes a cast recording a good one? is it the show that won't lend to an audio only medium? quality of the actors as reording artists (because Beth Malone is a terrifc actress whom I love, but I couldnt listen to most Fun Home tracks)? the editing of the musical to fit the recording?
Do you guys have different recordings that are better/worse than others?
(for the record I think the Hamilton's recording does the show justice- in that that it's fun and a good show, but not the best thing that ever happened to musical theatre)

The only thing that can put me off a cast recording of a show I like is the actors featured on it. For instance, with Fun Home, I only listen to the off-broadway recording of when it was at the Public because I much prefer Alexandra Socha's voice to Emily Skeggs. However, both times I've seen Fun Home have been with Emily Skeggs and in person her voice doesn't bother me at all and she gives a terrific performance.
In general though if I like all the actors/voices featured and I like the show, I will like the cast recording.

In the "good but still overrated" column: The Producers. The original movie has always been one of my favorites, and I love musicals, so I should have been a tailor-made audience member. And... meh. I definitely laughed, but today I can't remember a single song or melody other than some vague sense of Nathan Lane's antics and the chants of "Unhappy" from "I Want to be a Producer". And "Springtime for Hitler" of course, but that was in the original movie, and anyway the musical version exemplified the repeated problem of the whole show: taking gags from the movie and pushing them one step too far over the top.

Add me to the list for The Book of Mormon. I enjoy most of the cast recording but I was underwhelmed when I actually got around to seeing the show. I don't really understand the huge hype about it.

I'm going to throw this in there... Hamilton is very overrated for me! I mean it's good and different but I don't think it should of sweeped the TONYS as it didn't give other good musicals a chance too. I don't see the hype and I've heard better shows than this
