I do hope it doesn't appear that I'm being bossy, but I do think it's unfair to declare something overrated without actually seeing it. A cast recording is only ever a shade of the production as a whole, after all.

A cast recording is only ever a shade of the production as a whole, after all. It is. However, normally for me the music/soundtrack is the most important part. I actually try not to listen to cast recordings before I see a show. I tend to let the vague idea of the plot help me decide, but that can be wrong too. It was the soundtrack which made me extremely disappointed with Ghost (after having seen it on stage). It's the only time in recent memory that I haven't bought a soundtrack from a new musical. Hairspray was also a disappointment for me as along with parts of the plot, the music had been so overhyped I was only ever going to be disappointed. |

Am I allowed to nominate Hamilton, even though it hasn't arrived here (yet) and I haven't seen it? (I did see its sister, In the Heights, and found it SO overrated...) Have already heard enough about Hamilton to reckon it's completetly overrated! You're asking if you're allowed to pre-judge a show sight unseen? I mean, no one's going to stop you, but do you think that's fair? |

(I suppose what I meant was "Overhyped Musical"- is there a thread for that?- so much talk about it, and listening to ALW bigging up the composer on Radio 2 a few weeks back was the final nail in the coffin for me. Did you really mean those things you said, Andrew?)
I completely agree about cast recordings- they rarely do justice to a show. Once you've seen a production, the recording slots into place.

Bumping this up to add a vote for 'Blood Brothers' admittedly I saw it about 20 years too late but I just found it part dull and part just a bit contrived/emotionally manipulative.
Of course it wasn't helped by a Nolan sister 'acting' by cardigan folding (as pointed out on the Footloose thread)

Chorus Line A bit of masking tape as a set. 2 1/2 hour wait for a decent song and dance number. I can only assume you didn't get the concept of the show as for me A Chorus Line is one of the most beautiful pieces of theatre I have seen in a long time, although I am aware this didn't appeal to everyone. Also can just ask which number appeared at 2 1/2 hours into the show? Only when I saw it the show was only 2hrs long |

For me the most overrated musical is The Phantom of the Opera.
Don't get me wrong, there's lots to like about it in terms o the story, music, sets, costumes, wigs, etch but for me this is su overblown it's absurd.
Just my opinion- don't hate.

Wicked! Whilst I enjoy the show I don't think it is as good as some of its more loyal fans would like to think. I also think, in my personal opinion, that it is the type of show which is better the less you see it. By this I mean if I see it a few times in close concession I enjoy it less than if I only see it once every 12-18 months

Miss Saigon and especially Rachel Ann Go as Gigi.
Totally agree with Wicked, it isn't the worst show I have ever sat through but there are definite flaws in the story and the score.

Second most over rated - Jersey Boys. As dull as ditchwater, totally pedestrian and the most boring set I have ever seen.

Wicked - have literally never been so bored. Can anyone actually explain to me what all the hype is about? Well being a huge fan of Wicked myself, and having seen it many times... my reasons are it is relatable to my life in some of its subjects, the music is incredible in my opinion, the story is strong and the design aspects of the show are stunning. But obviously I realise it is not everyone's cup of tea and that is fine.  |

Fun Home for me. Acting and singing was awful and I wasn't the biggest fan of the story. Most American's I've met have said it's really clever, but I couldn't really see anything that clever about this show.

Some of the themes such as bullying, friendship, love etc.

Good choice, I didnt get it at all and was bored with it after about 10 minutes. Only saving grace was that Russel Tovey (without dog) was sitting behind me. I had been thinking for days on on a show that disappointed me and could not come up with anything. I only go to see shows I know I will like and dont go to ones I know I wont. Some of the shows that would come into the category of "overated" if I had been to see them would be Lion King, Billy Elliott, Jersey Boys and Mamma Mia. |
