Oh marvellous. It's about bally time.
Ruthie Henshall would be fabulous as Chita Rivera.

Its not the Kander and Ebb Musical. A play adaptation of the novel. Oh well.

I saw the Donmar production. Was good but unless they get a big name in, I doubt I can be bothered

The original UK production had Mark Rylance and Simon Callow at the Bush Theatre!

Its not the Kander and Ebb Musical. A play adaptation of the novel. Oh well. Well gosh darn it. I couldn't be more disappointed if I was made to wear acrylic for the rest of my days.

I was very taken with this at the Donmar. Intrigued why it needs a new adaptation? Will wait for casting before deciding whether or not to go, I reckon.

I got caught up in this years ago; booked for it and went in not knowing it was the play.
Was still gripped, though!

First thought was strange to see the Menier do a musical in March.
Second thought why are they doing a popular musical as a play, in a theatre that is famous reviving musicals.
I think I'd rather watch Ryan suffer in acrylic.

Maybe this shouldn't be in the musicals section then...
We need a revival of the musical ASAP!! If they need a big name for Aurora, then Catherine Zeta Jones gets my vote.

I think I'd rather watch Ryan suffer in acrylic. I agree, nearly everyone will assume its the musical. Which does need a revival.

I love the intensity of the original adaptation. It really does work as a tense piece of stagecraft. I do worry that a new version might try to open things out from the cell - as that would be a mistake.
The musical (also one of my favourites) is different and the evocation the cinematic world of Molina's mind and the wider prison work really well. But I can't see why a new play version is needed.
Of course, casting is key - it needs two incredible central performances.
Keeping a watching brief on this one

You need actors with a real connection for Molina and Valentin.
For some reason I wonder whether Samuel Barnett might not be a good choice for Molina - he can do the camp and the heartbreaking. He is the right sort of age
And then for Valentin, I looked at who Barnett is known to work well - and that brought me to Dominic Cooper - but not so sure about him.

From the Menier's website:
"We are excited to announce our next show, the ground-breaking play Kiss of the Spider Woman by Manuel Puig, featuring a new adaptation by José Rivera ( The Motorcycle Diaries ) and Allan Baker."
We already have a thread on this in the Plays section, come over and chat there.

For some reason I wonder whether Alan Carr might not be a good choice for Molina - he can do the camp and the heartbreaking. He is the right sort of age
And then for Valentin, I looked at who Carr is known to work well - and that brought me to Justin Lee Collins - but not so sure about him.

I saw the film and the musical and it's more than enough. Can't see any way in which I'll be persuaded to go and see this.

Is there an Aurora character in the play or is it just the 2 men? David Bedella will no doubt be cast as one of the men...

There isn't an Aurora is the original play. It is just Molina and Valentin (plus some off-stage voices)
Bedella? Far too old
