As much as I LOVE new work and Flowers From Mrs Harris - do we reallllly need a another musical of this subject matter and men as women? Billy Elliot Hairspray (weak link) Kinky Boots La Cage I'm sure there are others! I really look forward to watching it and Sheffield does some amazing work but they theme? I'm not too sure we need another one.. I don't know La Cage, but it's a very different story from Kinky Boots and Hairspray. Apart from one scene, Billy doesn't really fall into this category at all in my eyes. In fact, of all of them, I feel Jamie is the most relevant to the younger generation with respect to the issues that it covers. |

I was a bit of a self-confessed groupie of Dan's band, The Feeling in my late teens/early twenties and saw them live at least once on every tour. Since then my addictive personality has moved from gigs to theatre as the prospects of queueing and standing shoulder to shoulder with a room full of strangers has become less appealing. Nonetheless, I'm disappointed that I haven't booked for ETAJ, as from that video I'm liking the look of this, a lot.
I remain hopeful that this has a life in London somewhere like the Southwark perhaps.

All the geometric white concrete with the huge jewel coloured doors, it looks as fresh and modern as the day it opened. And then you get into the auditorium and sit under a ceiling full of twinkling stars. Fab. |

In fact the regeneration over the years of that end of Sheffield city centre is also beautiful. Also love the fact that the Crucible's thrust stage makes it such an intimate space no matter where you sit. We are very lucky to have this an accessible distance away. |

Went over to Sheffield last night to watch this. Really enjoyed it and on the cusp of loving it. My head was filled with it when I woke this morning to the point that I might have to go again next week. John McCrea is fabulous as Jamie, undeniably engaging even at Jamie's least likeable moments. Yes you could say he seems a little stereotyped at times but we all know young(and not so young  ) gay men like that. Stereotypes come from repetion not invention. He holds the audience in his hands, you are right there with him feeling everyone of Jamie's highs and lows. The rest of the cast are excellent too. Lucie Shorthouse and Josie Walker as Pritti (his Best Friend) and Margaret (Mum) particularly notable. For me Margaret's character was quite reminiscent of Mum in Taboo, her songs having a feel of Talk Amongst Yourself from that show. I also really liked Luke Baker in the small but pivotal role of Dean. The set is very effective but I was slightly baffled by some seemingly extravagant bench automation. Love the choreography, so much energy in the group numbers which really adds to the show. It's not perfect. Some of the songs rely far too much on lyric repetition and there is one song particularly that although I liked it's imagery didn't work for me at all. Overall though, an excellent infectious show with a lot of heart that's definitely deserving of life beyond the Crucible. |

Just booked tickets to see this for a second time on closing night. Spoken to a number of people here in Sheffield that have been to see this and the reaction is overwhelmingly positive. Would really love to see this have a life outside Sheffield, it certainly deserves it!

I was discussing what the show might do after this far too short run in the interval with some of my other class mates as I went with my Theatre Studies class. I think someone hit the nail on the head. It will probably go on tour and be a success, then it will have a break and go on tour again and be just as successful. Then they'll take it to the West End and it will be a massive flop. The show is just too specific to Sheffield. Most of the jokes no-one would get unless you live in Sheffield. I hope they release amateur rights for it though because I could see it doing well with amateur and youth societies.

He's 16 and already out and he wants to show off his drag persona. It's based on a really moving documentary that was on BBCThree. It's a great show for gay youth - they don't have anything to relate to in La Cage or even Priscilla with its middle aged characters. This is celebrating the LGBTQ+ community and especially with the success of Drag Race definitely has a place in pop culture right now. |

What an absolutely joyful, heartwarming and lovable show. John McCrea as Jamie holds the audience in the palm of his hand. Brilliant performances from everyone but Josie Walker as Jamie's mum singing He's My Boy was stunning as was Lucy Shorthouse as Priti singing "It Means Beautiful".
Decades ago as a 20 year old I parked up in the little car park (no longer there) next to The Crucible peering across the road at the entrance to the Top Rank nightclub where the monthly "gay ball" was held. I was looking at the people going in to see if I recognised anyone, terrified that they might "tell" that I'd been seen there. It took well over an hour to get from the car into my first ever gay club. I was bricking it for about the first 20 minutes then... well the rest is history!
Today in the very same place I watched a show about a beautiful, out, proud gay 16 year old along with an audience of kids, youngsters, middle aged couples and grandparents, every one of whom jumped to their feet and raised the roof with their ovation. It was incredibly emotional for me seeing this in my home town. I know things aren't perfect but bloody hell, we've come a long long way.
