Atherton is too mature to play either twin opposite anyone. Yes, she sounds like a Disney princess but the lady is in her late 30s and I'm sure can find more age-appropriate roles.

Do they stay young and naive throughout the whole show? Yeah I'd say Evelyn Hoskins could be great (going by the one song I know from this) but I'd be more than happy to suspend disbelief however old the actresses are if they're giving a great performance, if there are younger actresses who could do this justice then I hope they are cast. They do, and possibly even moreso than in the original version, since there's an extended flashback about the twins' lives as children/teenagers. Emily and Erin looked and acted younger, for the most part, more than Alice and Emily did. Of course they become wiser women as the show moves on, but the way this was revised, the twins seem a little more naive and willowy than before, which I'd imagine translates to casting younger. |

Instead of buying Easter eggs I am going to give itune my money this bank holiday and download a couple of CD's
Which version of Side Show should I get? The OCR or the 2014?
Anyone heard or got both?
Ive just listened to snippits on iTunes but cant make my mind up which is best.

The 2014 is the version you'll be seeing in Southwark, so there's that. But you can't not get the original with the great Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner.

LOL I was about to type the same recommendation before reading your response. I honestly think you absolutely need to get both. HOWEVER..If you MUST get one, I would say get the OBC because the twins are cast differently here. In the OBC they are very much individuals and very different from each other; Emily Skinner has a very big belt, and Ripley is a bit more traditional. In the revival, I think the goal was to make them look, sound and be very much believable as actual twins, so they both tend to have similar (kind of thin) belty voices. |

Ideally you need both as there are differences in the scores (and the 2014 recoding also has the bonus track of the cut title song). But if you can only get one, definitely the OBC because Alice and Emily are astonishing.

I watched a video yesterday on YouTube that someone had recorded of the opening number on Broadway. No disrespect to our American friends but the video consisted of the audience whooping, cheering and clapping as every cast member entered the stage, meaning that their noise completely drowned the music and singing. Is that the norm? Maybe this is one advantage of us Brits being more reserved.

I must say, I saw video of the final performance and even with it being a final performance, the clapping and cheering was a bit much. I can understand for the leads to clap when they enter, but the audience literally clapped for every, single member of the cast when they made their first entrance, you couldn't hear anything at all haha. Even a Wicked cast change over here gets only entrance applause for Glinda, Elphaba and Fiyero.

Also, I'd add, if you only get the cast recording of the 1997 production, just know that this isn't quite the "look and feel" of the revival, so adjust accordingly.

I think they're talking about the revival. There's a video of most of the big numbers on YouTube. I'm not sure of an OBC closing night video, but there is a sound desk recording of that performance as well that is commonly found on zi intraweb.

I have been waiting almost 20 years to see Side Show!! its about time it was performed over here.. booked already, and its so much better that you actually have a seat number now at the Southwark Playhouse

Has anyone done a date exchange at the Southwark Playhouse? I have tickets to the final performance on December 3rd but would want to exchange them to sometime in November.
I just did a date change with the ENO and they were so very helpful and relaxed about it.
