Thinking of taking advantage of the offers on TodayTix and coming down sometime in the next few weeks. Would love to catch Cassidy as Carole and hey, I get to see the show earlier than I'd planned.

Show was briliant, Cassidy is a superstar! The full Dress Circle gave a standing ovation at the end when she bowed, she was just phenomenal. This is onw of my fsvourite jukebox musicals, I just love it!

"On 28 November, Matthew Seadon-Young and Barbara Drennan will join the West End cast of Beautiful - The Carole King Musical to play Gerry Goffin (Carole King’s husband and song-writing partner) and Genie Klein (King’s mother) respectively. Cassidy Janson continues in the title role as well as Lorna Want as song-writer Cynthia Weil, a role for which she won the 2015 Olivier for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical and Ian McIntosh as song-writer Barry Mann. Joseph Prouse, who recently joined the company, plays Donnie Kirshner (music publisher and producer)." www.officiallondontheatre.co.uk/news/latest-news/article/item379344/new-cast-members-announced-for-beautiful/

In my opinion this is a good thing. I saw the show a few weeks ago and you could tell the guy who played Gerry had been in it a long time (unlike Lorna). He had also put on some weight.
I know you all scream at me when I mention weight issues but casting is casting and actors are given the jobs to suite the specific character. It's a tough business and being a stone overweight is not acceptable unless specified (it's worse in America) and love it or hate it - that's how the cooky crumbles in showbusiness.

Funny that no one else has mentioned this supposed extra stone. But then, not everyone actually feels that it really matters that much. However, Matthew Seadon-Young is very talented and I'm sure he'll be a great addition to the cast. Looking forward to revisiting eventually (although I've been saying that since I saw the show during previews! )

Wow... and yet again weight is apparently an issue on this forum. Funny the same comments from the same person too.
It just amazes me that this kind of thought process exists in this day and age, and that people are so open to discriminate like this. And me being someone who has had mental health issues regarding food in the past, I can assure you it is these ignorant comments that cause issues to surface.
Both times I have seen the show I have found Alan attractive and very good in the role. His weight isn't and shouldn't be an issue. I didn't even notice he had put on weight! Don't be so damn ignorant!

As someone who works in the profession I know many people who have been called into production meetings and told to lose weight from the creative team. It's not my evil opinion, it's the reality of the profession.
Of course it doesn't matter if someone is fat or thin in society. But when you have expensive costumes producers do not want fluctuating actors (going too thin either actually). It's simply about casting and briefs.
Alan is attractive but yes he has also put on weight since the start of the run. It's not about being ignorant it's a simple fact. I know people who have not got roles because they are too tall, too thin, too classic, too preppy, too English rose, too thin, too fat and others not in shape enough. Perhaps it's taboo for you to all accept. But weight is a huge issue in musical theatre and acting and TV industry. Women are either size 8/10 or 18/20. It's stereo typical but that's how it works. Ask Grindrod, Pippa, Debbie O'Brien - casting folk and producers don't want average.
Anyway back to Beautiful and it's a fabulous show and I hope to see it with the new cast soon!

It's clearly not been a problem for him in Beautiful, until this point though. So I don't see why it even needs raising here. We have no idea what the intentions were behind his departure, and speculation that his weight was the reason is unfounded.

But why is that "how it works"? Why does it have to be that way? What are you doing to help, or are you supporting it by being complicit? You can shrug your shoulders and say "that's how it is," or you can be better about it. "Back to Beautiful," you say, sweeping your own issues under the rug...

A I never said that's the reason for his departure. He's a talented guy so good luck to him and I hope I see him in a show soon.
B I'm not brushing the issue under the carpet, as someone who has worked in the profession for 20 years I told you how it is (like it or not same for casting ugly actors in Hollyoaks or in Desparate Housewives etc).
C. 49thand8th I don't cast the shows but I'm sure most agents, casting director and producers in the world realise the reality of the profession. It's tough and physicality and weight matter. You're not going to get a Chicago dance chorus of size 12 women. You're just not. It's not about being better about it or worse - that is casting!!!

There is a huge difference between a couple of pounds and a couple of stones. I don't doubt the are some horrific people out there in the professional world who don't hire someone based on talent, but using the example of Alan and also another person yo have bashed Carrie, these are two talented, young people accaimed in their roles and other roles. Who gives a damn what size or weight when there really is no significant diference that would even cause concern to anyone. You say you work in the profession, but it is really not a professional thing to just go around bassphing people for their weight. Then again, you say you are in the profession, clearly with this level of disrespectful attitude you really don't belong there. Maybe best to stick to reviewing and discussing shows on here, not the weight of an actor... goodness knows you may go into a rant about sexuality or color next. 21st Century, look it up!

Thanks Firstly welcome! Its story/plot based. Though the first half has elements of unintentional concert as some know who have seen it, but mainly a story plot!

Thank you Trying to decide whether to book tickets on tour as I know it has rave reviews in the West End. As tickets are so expensive I have to decide if its worth it especially as there are no captions (I am deaf and use them to follow plot as well as lyrics). Some musicals are visual enough to make up for missing stuff and others are not. Hard to judge, but thanks for your help

If that works out then I'd definitely reccomend this show. I'm not a jukebox musical fan, but this show was just joyous. I saw the OLC but I'm sure it's just as good in London with the new cast. Excited to see who they get for the tour too!

Just want to state this getting back to the issue of weight...by criticizing Alan for gaining weight, it's implying that it's his fault. I am on medication for a jaw issue which cause me to gain weight in my belly area. I go to the gym 5x week and am quite healthy and it doesn't do much as the meds change your metabolism. So I've put on some weight but for the first time in a while, I'm not in pain.
Before criticizing, realize that this is his journey not yours and you don't know his circumstances.
