Why are the audience not getting the full show if the understudies are on especially when they are on at pretty much every performance?
In what way is it not the full show when the alternates are on?

Because they aren't wearing proper costumes for their characters. But they’d have to have 24 extra costumes (six for each cover as they all cover all the roles) |

I actually don't have a problem with them having different costumes to the lead, in fact I love it. It makes each swing a proper member of the cast with their own take on the character they're playing, rather than just filling in for someone. Especially with ones like Collette's which are adapted slightly to still fit their personalities.
Plus, the Arts is tiny and there's no way (..) they could fit 30 full bulky costumes all ready to be worn each show.

Six appears to have found a "solution" to their problems. Jen Caldwell who is alternate Boleyn/Howard on the tour and has been covering Cleves in London for the weekend appears to be staying in London as a swing until February. While on the UK Tour, Alicia Corrales-Connor who was Katherine Howard on NCL Bliss will be 1st Cover Howard on the tour until Jen returns. This is backed up by Alicia's spotlight profile.
This shouldn't cause problems for the ship because they only do 4 shows per cruise and some cruises are 3 weeks long. They're also nearing the end of their contract.
A creative solution I must say but with so many main cast members out in London, a 5th swing is probably a better option. There is no Howard, Alexia has a severe knee injury, Danielle has a sinus infection, Natalie is now indisposed and Cherelle Jay is feeling overworked as an alternate and is now taking some time off.

The tour is usually an 8 show week which works much better, it’s only in Manchester they’ve been having problems as there’s been some 9 show weeks there and they were all in one dressing room which meant illnesses spread faster.

I really like the alternates having their own costumes too, I think it makes them individuals. And I really like the actual costumes- Collette's black and white one is a bit dull, but I really love Zara's pinky lilac one, the teal shorts one is really zingy, and the orange trousers with the pelmet thing is fab!
As said above, the only time it's been the plain leotard thing that the band wear, with a few added bits, has been when emergency covers were on.

Most audience members don't know they are watching 'alternates' though. Yes fans of the show do, but the general public have no idea who the main cast are, they are just going along to see the show.

This whole alternate/illness situation makes me feel ill and I don't even work on the show! Bet they can't wait for Sophie to start, bet she ends up debuting earlier than expected.
I hope they're appreciating Jen, Hana and Zara over there cos they are seriously holding the show together right now.

^After doing the show for a large number of times over months and months,I would think that the Queens would want to spread their wings and try new roles.The fact that they often ‘pop back’ to cover for illness etc suggests that they are happy to help out as required.Just guessing.
I do think they should have a lot more people hired as alternates or covers
Granted it is only a 75 minute show,but they all stay on stage all the time.One dressing room for all is a breeding ground for spreading germs in the winter months.

What's this show actually like? Tonally? Thematically etc. What could it be compared to? I'm all for innovative new musicals, but not if they're too poppy. I'm interested in the concept, but hesitant about taking the plunge on it.

I'm interested in the concept, but hesitant about taking the plunge on it. It's like a very clever and funny stand up comedy routine mixed with a Spice Girls concert, only with great music and fantastic performers who can actually sing and dance. The first and last song are 'poppy' the rest are a mix of different musical styles from skater punk to hip hop to soul, covering a wide range of emotions with each of the Queens/Wives being 'modelled' on a different modern day pop performer. It's also unabashedly British and female empowerment without being even remotely preachy. I've taken people from the ages of 20 - 67 of all genders and sexualities and all have absolutely loved it. IMO it's best thing currently playing in London. |

I'm intrigued. I love Spice Girls (but I don't know if their style has a place in musical theatre!)
I find comedy very subjective though - what style of comedy? If it's very British then that's a good start (for me!)
