Just announced Fanny and Alexander adapted by Stephen Beresford Mood Music - new play by Joe Penhall A Monster Calls - based on the Patrick Ness novel, with the dreaded phrase "devised by the company" Sylvia - Dance piece by Flick Colby's Zoonation No mention of Emma Rice's "Wise Children" but looking at the news stories on that, that's supposed to be the first show in Matthew Warhorse's fourth season and this is his third. www.oldvictheatre.com/whats-onBooking dates (I have to say a 9-level class system seems a bit excessive!) Priority booking opens at 12 noon on: Tue 24 Oct: Artistic Director’s Circle Wed 25 Oct: Producers’ Circle Thu 26 Oct: Benefactors Fri 27 Oct: Patrons Mon 30 Oct: Premium Associates Wed 1 Nov: Associates Fri 3 Nov: Premium Friends Wed 8 Nov: Friends Wed 15 Nov: General sale

I wonder whether all of those productions will make it to the stage.
HMS Pinafore was announced for 2016-17 - and never happened as far as I can track down.

Sylvia - Dance piece by Flick Colby's Zoonation Flick Colby - now you've got Marty's attention as I'm sure he must have been a Pan's People fan. One curious thing is that Flick Colby is actually dead.

None of that seems particularly appeasing. £10.00 preview tickets ahoy!

'Sylvia' looks interesting. And here was I thinking that Katie Price was just about her boobs and writing autobiographies.

I love Sally Cookson and A Monster Calls, but I'm not big on dance and I'm getting pretty bored by the endless male playwright+male director combo, especially when none of the names are that exciting in their own right. Still, as I always say, it's nice to have plays announced that one won't be booking, a rest is always appreciated.

Fanny and Alexander adapted by Stephen Beresford Intriguing. I wonder how this is going to work. The complete version is over 5 hours long, and even the shortened film adaptation is a smidge over 3 hours.

Hmmm... a long wait for this announcement but not really that exciting in my view apart from, potentially, the Joe Penhall play.

A Monster Calls is the one I'll be booking for, just hope they don't mess too much with it...

A resounding 'meh' from me also. And a resounding 'Have you never met a woman playwright Matthew?' also.

All the women playwrights are booked up writing for the new National season.
Oh hang on ...
Have to say I've got to the point where it's a bit of a relief when a theatre announces the new season and I'm not bothered about anything! May go for the Penhall but that's it I think.

I'll probably see A Monster Calls at Bristol Old Vic which is co-producing it.
For playgoers, the Joe Penhall-Roger Michell premiere sounds unmissable.
The Kate Prince show about Sylvia Pankhurst should have been titled Sylvia: The Woman.

A Monster Calls is the one I'll be booking for, just hope they don't mess too much with it... Sally Cookson is a wonderful director, so it is in good hands. Her children's shows are amongst the best things I've seen in the past 10 years. Before the Old Vic it's in Bristol, where it'll be half the price and a more intimate venue if you're in the vicinity. Joe Penhall hasn't made it onto my list of must-see playwrights, so I'll wait for reviews, but I have to say 'the music scene' sounds tediously male - and who really finds pop singers (sorry, rock stars) interesting? I hope to be proved wrong. And I remained unconvinced of the need to bring cinematic masterpieces to the stage.

In the 2016-17 year NT just reported 42% of plays by living writers they staged were by women, this seems well on the way to their committed target of 50% by 2021. There are other theatres you could take to task on this if you wanted, Almeida and Hampstead come to mind.

I mean it's all I've ever dreamed of Seriously though, yes there are worse offenders out there (Hampstead I'm looking at you, but well done on the women downstairs this season...how about some upstairs) But as with everything, women need to shout louder and longer to get heard. Admittedly there's better ways of doing that than whining on a message board and I know several of us do that too. But I also like a good moan.

Discerning is my middle name. I’m not knocked out and panting about this Old Vic season but there might be hidden treasures.

It does seem bey poor pickings next year. I mean Matthew Warchus seems to have one eye on what could transfer to the West End and Broadway and new plays is the perfect vehicle, didn't he learn from Future Conditional and Groundhog Day. Next season is more take it or leave it and I'm afraid it is going to be the later for me.
