Makes me think they're using the drum if it's THAT technical - sad for people who had tickets this early but...exciting Appears to be a circular tape mark on the rehearsal floor in the rehearsal images so I'd imagine so! Exciting!!! could just mean revolve as opposed to drum, but hopefully for the drum!

I went on a NT tour a few years ago and they said they couldn't use the drum for technical reasons. Is it back in use these days? I don't go there often enough to know.

I went on a NT tour a few years ago and they said they couldn't use the drum for technical reasons. Is it back in use these days? I don't go there often enough to know. I remember it being used for "His Dark Materials" Was it not used for "Anthony and Cleopatra" or "Hadestown"? That’s an incredible bit of set design. I wish I’d seen it.

Yes it was definitely used in A&C - you can see it towards the end of this clip:
Hadestown definitely had a central lift which went down to create a pit, though I'm not sure if the drum was providing the automation for it.
I think Dear England used a separate revolve system which was built on top of the Olivier stage.
I presume it's still working - would be great to see it in The Witches!

The Drum revolve is a liability as it breaks down a lot, so most shows don’t use it. It takes a brave Director and designer to use it nowadays.

It’s been 10 years in the making
What a shame to be cancelling previews now
And if any part of this is a f*** up
It will be due to wrong choice of director

The revolve is broken and the NT can't afford to fix it. To quote Hadestown: Hard times in the world of men!

Just to update on my cancelled performance ticket, the National Theatre Box Office team have managed to find me another £20 seat for a date I could make. Third row Stalls rather than front, but that will suit me. Much better support than most other theatres. So if you do have a ticket for a cancelled performance and the published ticket availability doesn't suit, do check with the Box Office. Thanks to them.
Looks like tonight's performance is going ahead. They have released some extra tickets today.

Interval... Looks like the national have got a hot on there hands... You would not think this is the first preview. It's funny, tha cast are amazing, and it looks fantastic. Hoping act 2 is as good!

It's a good first preview. Very funny and well written, some iffy accents, but not one memorable tune for me yet...
(EDIT: I cursed it, it went pearshaped after the interval... yet curiously I preferred the second half...)

I'm not going to say too much as it was first preview. This has the makings of a good show. The second half had a showstop due to a fault with the set which couldn't be fixed, so it was removed. I actually preferred the second half to the first despite it resembling "The Play That Goes Wrong" at times. I'm looking forward to returning in a couple of weeks once it has settled in.

Please tell me this is more akin to the 1990 film in tone than that cartoonishly stupid 2020 film

Please tell me this is more akin to the 1990 film in tone than that cartoonishly stupid 2020 film There are bits I like, bits I don't like. The humour is good, some of the cast are good, bits fell flat for me, other bits were really good. Too early to say off a pretty ropey first preview which didn't flow at all smoothly. Oh, and cue the return of the "look at me" proud parents - I'd wondered where they had all gone after School of Rock closed...

Well it was infinitely better than Hex at least..
A real mixed bag for me I think. Agree with Ceebee, no memorable songs or anything sticking in my head after. Song of the numbers were really fun to watch, but I’m not sure I was desperate to listen to any of them again.
In my opinion the first 15 minutes dragged a bit and it only picked up when they arrived at the hotel, and it really got camp. That’s when I think I started finding it funny too.
Standouts for me were the boy playing Bruno, the hotel manager and the grandma.
Long showstop as others have said, due to I think a set piece becoming misaligned on the revolve and smacking into another piece of set. Cue the national theatre audience starting a Mexican wave.
Hard to judge overall, but I’s probably give a high 3 stars, and I actually think the chaos just added to my enjoyment of it, so that didn’t harm the score.
