I hear you however, the way I see it, it's an established story and the opportunity for a new musical,so that can't be a bad thing, right? And it's at The National.

All I think is how are they going to do the mice? Probably a silly question and I expect a puppet with the actor who played the person operating it but still.

The book and movie are fabulous, so I'm game! I can imagine there is a great potential visually, and whoever gets cast aas The Grand High Witch, thats a terrific character to play so hopefully that will translate well and they can get a well-established musical actress to take on that role and bring it to life successfully.

Roald Dahl hated the movie because they changed the ending! I think it's a good film but I would be up for a more faithful adaptation. The success of Matilda and to a lesser extent Charlie has lead to a lot more stage adaptations of Dahl's work with Fantastic Mr Fox and The Twits most recently. The Witches was done as a play so a musical could work really well. The Dahl books left that could be adapted for the stage are James and the Giant Peach, The Magic Finger and George's Marvellous Medicine as I don't think you could do The BFG as a play or a musical. |

Also my reaction. But I think this is a good thing. I'd rather an unknown as theres no expectation there as opposed to a known which could lead to disappointment. Pasek & Paul composed for James & the Giant Peach when they were relatively unknown (compared to their reputation now and I think the score is great and under-recognised). I can imagine an Andrew Lippa score being quite underwhelming and a Tim Minchin score, well, 1 he's probably contractually restricted to composing for a Dahl for RSC only, 2 would cost far too much and 3 has the potential to lead to disappointment with people comparing to Matilda. I doubt Shaiman would be asked to score another Dahl given the insipid score on the Broadway production and general lacklustre response. |

The BFG has been done on stage loads of times. The Magic Finger and George's Marvellous Medicine have been done too. David Wood seems to be a keen adaptor of Roald Dahl books to the stage.

BFG was touring when I was a kid (as a play) I mean there are certainly worse things to adapt for the stage so on one hand crack on NT. On the other I've no desire to see it so meh, personally.

Young and short aren't what I'd associate with the character but then it's been a long time since I've read the book. Angelica Huston was excellent in the film and she's certainly not short (or even young when the film was made). |
