I refuse to pay those prices and have told all my friends not to go and that it is a bad musical in protest. The Elf effect needs to learn from the Harry Potters. Too expensive and you price yourself out of the market - especially if the set doesn't do loop the loop of Madonna isn't in it! (You get my drift!) Oh. That's not nice. If you don't want to pay the ticket price, that's fine but to spread the word that it's a bad musical just because you think it's too expensive and you want to put them off going to see it (to what? Teach the producers some kind of a lesson?) is just not cricket I'm afraid.

I'm surprised you didn't just tell them that Charlie is to fat to play the lead, that seems way more your usual description of a production.

The whole pricing thing, it's business. It annoys me as much as the next person when a show that deserves to be packed out is half empty because the pricing strategy is stupid, but at the end of the day the Producers have clearly decided to go for a high price point, we can rant or moan all we like but it won't change. Why on earth anyone would tell people it's a bad show as some form of protest is beyond me. Here's an idea, be honest? "It'a a good show but the pricing is way too high, the producers are being greedy and if you're gonna pay full price, really think about it first" would do the job surely?
Drives me bonkers when shows/producers all but price themselves out of the market, but we should still support new, good musicals.

Anywho, Elf recouped it's investment, despite any protest. Hardly discouraging to Producers.

Yes, theatremonkey very fairly expressed. I do think producers generally price high now to build in discounts which are now virtually the norm. It's like the 3 for 2 offers in the supermarkets - the price of the individual items are inflated to produce the offers which still maintain the margins.

Super analysis Theatre Monkey. Charlie Kemp in this was rather sweet I enjoyed his performance. It's worth seeing yes. Just not at those prices. You can see two shows for the same price.
People didn't see Elf in protest - I see not difference.

Telling other people it's an awful show out of spite is hardly the same.

Personally I take their advertising at face value and so expect to get in for a threepenny bit.

Well Wendy, instead of telling others don't go - that is unfair to a great show. Why not get a group of them together and get a group rate. If you live in easy distance from London then go on a week night and get good rates. I cannot do this as to come up from Cornwall, see a show and go back is not viable in a day. We have to do a weekend, they want good seats and we then have to pay top "normal" price but not premium (I will not pay that even for myself)as it is a Saturday show.

Hey, throw a temper tantrum a'la Violet Elizabeth Bott and scream and scream until you are sick.

I struggled with this, got a free ticket so I've had to write a niceish review, but it is just a bit boring and underdeveloped. There's so many songs too that I felt like I was in an opera and very few of them memorable.
Charlie Stemp is good but he does seem young and enthusiastic rather than talented. I think he will get work after this ends but what kind of work is the question. I really liked Ian Bartholowmew and felt the production really picked up when he gets run over but it is just too long and too much.

Yes, I thought it was a little too long in Chichester. They have added lots of songs but cut very few and I thought this only added to the length.

How is the photographer in the end of the show in this? Calmed down or overacted camp attack?

How is the photographer in the end of the show in this? Calmed down or overacted camp attack? Still campy but he is only in it briefly and I liked that he is played by the same actor who plays James Walsingham. I've been thinking about the casting as well. It was a shock to realise it was all white but it also summed up the sort of audience Mackintosh wants or the audience Mackintosh thinks wants this sort of production.

I liked the fact that the new production ends with the wedding and Flash Bang Whallop. A better ending than the original show which continues after the wedding with Kipps fathering kids and running a small bookshop.
The camp photographer (who was on throughout the number in Chichester) I hated. Totally over the top and completely out of period.

Well I'm looking forward to the show. Am seeing it on Monday... paid only £5.50 on TodayTix for an Upper Circle seat but am kinda expecting an upgrade though even if not, will be happy! I have never heard the story, music or really know anything about it other than the trailer. It looks great fun though so I can't wait!

Is this show vastly different from the film with Tommy Steele, (not sure if there's another one?), which is my only experience of the story and songs?

Is this show vastly different from the film with Tommy Steele, (not sure if there's another one?), which is my only experience of the story and songs? Well the film is based on the original stage musical so will already have its differences, and this version has been "updated" from the original stage musical, with a new book and a few of the old songs (many have been cut) mixed with a new score.

Just go to back from this. I loved the film when I was younger so was really looking forward to seeing it but I thought it was too long and had far too many new songs in it that weren't really necessary. It all felt a bit disjointed as well. Charlie Stemp was really good although after a while his Lee Evans esque acting got a little bit to much.

The are papering all over the place
Don't producers realise
That one week before opening
When 75% tickets are unsold
It might be cheaper to pull the run?
