This new production is to be relocated to Harlem during its renaissance (which was in the 1920s). OK, now THAT is exciting indeed. A whole new spin on the tale. Want to see this for sure. Well at least we know when Harlem's renaissance was! This is best musical ever imo and i will def go☺

Changing skin colour using make-up, unless for fantasy ("Wicked") or scientific research ("Black Like Me") is a no, these days. A real intellectual tangle, isn't it! Well SOMEONE clearly hasn't seen An Octoroon!

The Wiz with a white cast playing the characters as written would essentially be a minstrel show.
On the subject of all black casts, Pearl Bailey's Hello Dolly in the sixties was a famous example. A typical David Merrick publicity stunt, yes, but one with a real sense of breaking down barriers. the 1976 Guys and Dolls was supervised by the original bookwriter Abe Burrows so it even has the approval of the person who wrote it. To be out of touch with the way the world is in 2017 is one thing but it takes a very special level of bigotry to be out of touch with the society of fifty years ago.
Setting it in the Harlem Renaissance is interesting as that was the time when Runyon was writing the short story that served as the main inspiration for the show.

An all black cast?? I think this is a disgrace and PC blind colour casting gone too far. What about an all white cast of The Lion King? Madness... I'm sorry but it has to be said. There is no reason why Guys and Dolls can't have an all black cast. hello Dolly did it with Pearl Baily and Dolly is Jewish in the show. If they can get talented people, then that is what matters. Your comment about this being a disgrace is short sighted and down right racist.

Let's not forget the Black Mikado that was a great success.....they totally revamped the music, but Sullivan was still recognisable. Presumably the Exchange will revamp the score for Guys and Dolls.

Add me to that list, its the only musical I've ever fallen asleep in the middle of whilst at the theatre.

The Patrick Swayze version, Wednesday September 06 2006.
...and it was Act 1, I had to check the programme at the interval to see how much I'd missed. It was just such a dull show and I was in the middle of the row and it was full so couldn't leave.

I don't think he's being racist at all, just noting that if Lion King was to cast a whole white production there would be uproar. Fair enough.
racist
noun: racist; plural noun: racists
1. a person who shows or feels discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or who believes that a particular race is superior to another

He said an all black cast Guys and Dolls would be a disgrace.
Don't think it's ambiguous at all.

Once again, we are getting real, literal life mixed up with theatre. Was there a fuss this year when Jonas Kaufmann sang Otello? Did people return tickets?

Am going on Monday. Will report back.
I saw the Chichester one 8 times - it's one of my faves - so am feeling trepidation about a new production. Not wowed by the trailer....

Nobody here seems aware that when the National Theatre did Guys and Dolls in 1997, Sky Masterson was played by Clark Peters, who's black ...

That was in the last century when people were civilised.
In our new century, everyone screeches on social media.
