Both plays in Newcastle now.
So if you are local to the North East it is worth the trip.
The Red Lion****
Saw this at the National a couple of years back and really enjoyed it. So was interested to find out what a new production had to offer, this one starred local lad Stephen Tomlinson, as the gaffer, you see this is set in a small local club, where the physio is also the kitman/Groundsman/ Caretaker/Masseur and what happens when a new player joins the ranks, Obviously this is centred around soccer, but you don't have to love or follow soccer to follow this, although well acted unsurprising I thought the Naional cast edged it just, but the cast are still very credible, also the ending at the National was more poignant.
East Is East*****
I love this play or comedy, once you get passed the domestic violence, this is a laugh out loud play, that smoulders then really erupts at the end, so well written and the characters are well defined. This tells the story of a hypocrite Pakistani Patriarch, but his sons and more British than Pakistan and are determined to keep their Anglo indenty, even when it is a struggle by a nasty determined father.
See if I can get down to Birmingham for Billy Elliot tomorrow night.
