Just watching Graham Norton's chat show and Patrick Stewart said that he has long had an idea (initially a joke but said he is more serious about it as time goes on) about a revival with the following cast
Hugh Jackman - Sweeney Todd
Ian Mckellen - Mrs Lovett
Patrick Stewart - the judge
Not sure if this is genius or a horrible idea but it would sell a lot of tickets. Personally I don't think Hugh could act or sing it well enough

I'm still waiting, vainly I know, for the announcement that Philip Quast will be playing Sweeney. I know it'll never happen now but a woman can dream can't she?

The only good thing about this whole notion is Patrick Stewart as Turpin - what an inspired idea. Jackman is far too handsome, broad and razzmatazz to play Todd. In fact I miss the good old days of proper actors tackling the role like Len Cariou and Alun Armstrong. It's recently become a vehicle for showbiz sorts doing their best Johnny Depp impersonations… Cariou, Armstrong, along with George Hearn and Denis Quilley (and even Michael Cerveris) all understood the Grand Guignol/music hall tradition in which the character is written.

Which category is Michael Ball's performance in? I thought he was fantastic in Chichester! But David Arnsperger for the WNO production wasn't entirely convincing in my opinion. To be honest I wasn't a huge fan of Hugh Jackman's voice in Les Mis so I can't imagine his Sweeney being much better. Besides isn't he a tenor? It would be the wrong vocal range completely. |

I haven't found this to be the case at all in the maybe four or five productions I've seen since the movie came out. (Granted, these were all in the US.) And I'm seeing it off-Broadway with Jeremy Secomb next month. Norm Lewis wouldn't fit the mold you describe either. |
