I just don't understand why people slag off Liisi, I love her voice, she suits the role so well!

I don't like Liisi's voice alot on most of the songs but then somehow she pulls it out the bag for her really big numbers.

Deena isn't meant to have a great voice. It's not meant to be as good as Effie's but it's still supposed to be good (I'm not saying that Liisi isn't good by the way). If Deena's voice wasn't supposed to be good, they wouldn't have cast Beyoncé in the film would they?

Deena is the Miss Ross to Effie's poor old Florence Ballard.

I thought Liisi was amazing when I saw the show. I went to the show expecting Amber to be amazing (which she was) and left amazed by Liisi's voice.

Deena isn't meant to have a great voice. My understanding from the movie was that Deena was supposed to have a more 'radio friendly' and 'commercial' voice than Effie, while Effie's is more 'soulful'. There's one line in the movie where Deena's mother is watching her sing lead and she comments that she didn't think Deena had a great voice. It's a bit absurd because obviously she has a different type of voice, but she's still incredible.

My understanding from the stage show was because Deena had a weaker voice than Effie, but I wouldn't be surprised that is the case with the movie, mainly because Beyoncé played Deena so they could hardly sqy she had a crap voice, and they couldn't ask Beyoncé to sing crap, shes not that good an actress!!

Well, Audra McDonald played Deena in a special and I don't think she sang badly.
Deena is supposedly to lov... to have a radio-friendly voice as has been already said, just like Diana Ross.

This is Sarah Ikumu who won the BGT golden buzzer when she sang AIATY. I found this of her singing listen and think it's so beautiful for a 15 year old! If she was 5 years older I'm sure Dreamgirls would snap her up!!

The New York Times has reviewed the show, speaking very positively of Amber (comparing the reception from the audience to that of Bette and Glenn) and reviewing the production itself as positive, if a big to glitzy and glam. And notes what has been said on here about the sound and the over-yelling at times. The only supporting cast he really discusses is Adam who he says could tone down a little bit, and says Lissi's modern pop voice could be leavened out with a bit more period appropriate silkiness. He also says the ensemble and cast perhaps take the message a bit too much to heart. He makes a point of saying that it is a mostly American cast. www.nytimes.com/2017/04/30/theater/review-a-souped-up-dreamgirls-roars-in-london.html?smid=tw-nyttheater&_r=0So a postive review for the most part, and a love letter to Amber. It makes a great way for the transfer nd for Amber to go along with it. As we know, this is pretty much the only review that really matters in New York that can boost ticket sales (as well as award success and, of course, word of mouth) but its looking all good at the moment for this production.

I expect Brantley to stay in London at least until Angels in America's opening night, I'm curious to see what he will review next. Surely Virginia Woolf, and then?

Just saw this tonight.
My first outing was the first preview, followed by the fourth (or fifth?) preview.
Marisha Wallace- excellent Effie. Nails the acting, great singing, though I noticed that she was slightly out of breath in And I Am Telling You, and decided to scream a certain note instead of hitting it. But overall, the girl is a star. Amber's singing is better and more impressive, but what I liked about Marisha is her slightly grittier acting. Amber, I thought, was just a tad too Disney Channel.
Asmeret Ghebremichael. I do miss Ebinabo's Laurel, but Asmaret does a fine job, though not as striking or funny as her predecessor. I did love how she took her shoe off to start a cat fight with Effie.
Lily Fraser (as Michelle)..I always thought she was the weakest thing in the show, and I am just shocked at how poor she is. She sounds like someone is choking her any time she opens her mouth. You really don't need to be a theatre connoisseur to see how bad she is.
Overall good stuff. Audience slightly fidgety and for goodness sake do we really need to sell popcorn at a theatre? I mean, really?! I was openly judging the hick four seats down at intermission when his popcorn and pepsi were delivered to him. I also quieted two tourists behind me fifteen minutes in. You're welcome. I honestly prefer a whopping audience clapping mid-song over these philistines who talk amongst each other or eat junk during the show. At least an overzealous audience member is connecting with the show and giving the cast full attention.

I too was there last night and would agree with ali's remarks above.
I was front row of the Dress Circle courtesy of Today Tix for £40. (Shameless plug - my code PSFBP) A fabulous seat! Usually at premium prices for most performances at £99-145!! I enjoyed seeing the show from the circle more than the stalls previously. The front circle at the Savoy is not too far from the stage. Today Tix have some really good deals if you keep checking the app!
The show was in terrific shape and I thought in better shape than when I saw it earlier in the run. Marisha was fabulous, I was not worried about not seeing Amber at all. I thought the sound better too. It's a great night out and the theatre seemed full, although I suspect that dynamic pricing is in full force for this as it was quiet in London being a Bank Holiday Monday and I suspect a lot of people had not paid full price last night!

Just found this little dollop of info on LTD's groups booking page:
Groups now booking until 10 February 2018! Please note, casting for the role of Effie White for the booking period 23 October 2017 to 10 February 2018 has yet to be announced.
So Amber's last day is probably going to be 21st October *hurries to book a ticket*

Will Marisha get bumped up to perma -Effie?
Karen as Alt-Effie?
And...... oh no.... could it be? No, they wouldn't. They couldn't....
Get Ruth back as second alternate?
She got this!

On the ATG booking page, it says this below the list of Amber's holiday dates:
'Amber Riley is scheduled to perform in Dreamgirls until Saturday 18 November 2017'
I wonder if that's changed then, if it says differently on the Group Booking page?

In a discussion with Marisha on Easter Sunday, she did say that if offered the role, she would stay in London in a heartbeat. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see her take over, she clearly has the audience support, the reviews and, in complete honesty, even if Amber weren't in the show, it would still sell based on the reviews and word of mouth alone.

Thinking about it, the phrasing on the groups page could just mean "The current booking period ends 21 October and Amber is guaranteed until this point, afterwards tbc" Anyway I've booked, and if it ends up being November I'll just grab an exchange
