Can anyone help me locate the remnants of my scalp? Last seen rocketing past the London Eye after Marisha blew the roof off the Savoy. Christ almighty, what a talent! I'll gather my thoughts more fully later but WOW.

I just do not understand why the ability to sing very loudly or riff equates to talent. Not seen the production but its always similar. Whether its Effie singing And I Am Telling You or Elphaba singing Defying Gravity. To me these are terrific belters but does not make them the best best talent. It makes them able to belt in the specific role. Effie is designed to be a showstopper as is Ephaba.

Finally got to see this after grabbing some heavily discounted tickets. Must say I was disappointed. Yes there are a handful of big songs but after that I'm afraid I found it all rather banal. Checking theatremonkey's site I feel I concur with his review. Loads of the audience loved it, so I know I am in a minority and I'm sure it will remain popular.

Wow, there goes my effort into tagging someone. And for some reason my edit option on my Mac expires immediately.

Marisha was outstanding today. Truly outstanding. Her characterisation was perfect.
Don't miss her!

I'm determined to see her. I already have a Monday evening ticket in May, but now I'm eyeing a Saturday matinee on one of Amber's scheduled leaves. Totally flirting with that ticket now. Might nab it tomorrow considering the exchange rate instead of day seating it.

Do you have to be gay or female to 'get' Dreamgirls?
Discuss!

Oh. My. Quivering. Life. Marisha Wallace. What did I just witness??! I don't want to say she's better than Amber but...she's miles better than Amber. I actually 'get' Effie as a character now. Whilst I think I'd rather listen to Amber on a CD, Marisha gave her soul today. And it was only a matinee performance. I enjoyed the show tenfold compared to my previous visit - maybe it was to do with sitting in better seats, maybe it was Marisha... incomparable experience though. Marisha's characterisation was perfection. Loved it. (We also saw the understudy for Lorell who was funky and powerful - with arms and shoulders to die for) That was Carly M Dyer as Lorell who is the 3rd cover

I wonder how Karen feels about this who Marisha thing? In the sense of Marisha clearly being the 1st Cover now, even though she was cast first?

Yeah I agree. I saw it and I'm glad I did, there are a handful of good songs, some great vocals, it's very enjoyable but I'd never go as far as to say it's a good musical

But that was her scheduled alternate show. Other than her scheduled alternate shows, since Marisha came into the show, she has done her scheduled alternate shows but none of the shows that Amber has had off, which is about two/three weeks worth of illness. Marisha has done all of the times Amber has been ill.

Do you have to be gay or female to 'get' Dreamgirls? Discuss! Would it be as successful as it is if it only had a gay and/or female audience?

Do you have to be gay or female to 'get' Dreamgirls? Discuss! My female other half was even less enthusiastic than me! I asked her if offered free tickets next week to this or The Wild Party which would she prefer. WP I'm afraid!

I am gay and I think it can be characterized as such because it shows strong divas who struggle, but can belt their faces off, something that the gay community can relate to, and what has become a common theme in the gay movement (the struggle, not the belting!) . In a sense, "Dreamgirls" may not be a gay show, but gay people love it as they love an underdog. Same can be true of "Sunset Boulevard," "Evita, "Gypsy," and "Cabaret."

It makes them able to belt in the specific role. Effie is designed to be a showstopper as is Ephaba. This is the difference, in my opinion, between Amber and Marisha. Amber can sing louder and hit some higher notes, and arguably better than Marisha can. But Marisha has a certain light and shade to her voice. She'd be equally as incredible if she didn't belt (even my mum said this, and she is not versed in the technical side of singing or performing) - she has a special way of being completely conscious of the emotion, the phrase, the register, which melts together and creates a beautifully rounded vocal performance. There are as many highs (aka belting or singing loudly) as there are lows (aka beautiful, carefully placed almost soprano moments). I think your comment is fair - when it comes to female leads, there are lots of hysteria over the ones that shout, and the ones that carefully plan their performance are often overlooked because they don't riff as much. Which is a shame.

Can some1 explain to me how the understudy works for this? Candace is 1st cover, Jocasta is 2nd and Carly 3rd for Lorell. However, sometimes Carly goes on recently when both Jocasta and Candace are there in the ensemble? Same for Jocasta instead of Candace? I thought Carly would only get on if J and C were both off? Pls explain.
Also where is Ibinabo?!

Who goes on is up to the Company Manager. Normally (especially in the UK) there is such a thing as first cover/second cover, but ultimately, it's up to the Company Manager to slot them in.

Surprised she is (technically) third cover - I loved her performance. Maybe a small issue with her diction but a wonderful characterisation. I actually preferred her to Ibinabo.
