In the rehearsal video that features Casey Nicholai talking about the show there's footage of Cadillac Car in which Amber is substituted by the understudy as was pointed out here a few pages back (and not either the alternates)..So perhaps she was partially rehearsed.

There's a tweet floating around saying that the police stormed the Savoy on Tuesday night. Anyone there?

I like this quote: "Had the rozzers been called in to stop the unnecessary and deeply annoying X Factor whooping, applauding and ovating that had been going on mid-songs? We could only live in hope. "

I love that they go on about the cheering mid song and how it is like X Factor when this has been going on at this show looooooooong before X Factor was even a thought. And the London audiences mat be tame compared to what they were originally on Broadway!

If I may, and correct me if I'm wrong or overstep any marks, but I feel there's a behaviour difference in audience breakdown. Audiences for shows like The Color Purple and Dreamgirls seem to attract more vocal audiences than shows that attract more traditionally... well, white audiences. I suspect there's a long and interesting history leading to cultural differences in audience responses.

I really agree. the only theatre experience i could compare Dreamgirls to was Color Purple on Broadway. It was that sort of audience. But perfect for the show!

It was a pretty white audience on Saturday afternoon and plenty of cheering mid-song going on!

Oooh, that seems exciting. I wonder if when the police tried to take them away did any of the offending audience members start shouting "aaaaaaaaaand I ammmmmm teeeeeeelling you, IIIIIIIIIIIII'm not going!"

Yesterday two of us came to London to see Dream Girls at the Savoy - matinee performance. I came up from Cornwall and my friend flew over from Germany to see it with me. I only received an email at 1350 from ATG telling us that both performances were cancelled. On arrival all ushers were outside the Savoy giving everyone slips telling them that due to multiple cast illness both the Wednesdays shows were cancelled. One told us that all three "Effies", lead and both understudies were sick. We had booked to see Ragtime in the evening so what to do now? We did a quick walk to the Noel Coward and even though the show was about 20 minutes in, got 2 tickets for £25 each - sorted! Now to try and see when Amber may be going (or staying) and try to book again!

I suspect there's a long and interesting history leading to cultural differences in audience responses. So...white audiences=behaved, non-white=vocal? Is that what you're saying? On both accounts when I saw Dreamgirls, the audience was overwhelmingly white, and yet they were extremely vocal and supportive. Ditto to other "belt your face off" shows I've seen in London, i.e. the Bodyguard where there are tons of people who would behave X-Factor style, predominantly white, simply because although there would be a somewhat mixed crowd, the majority of the audience from my Bodyguard outings have been white. The same white audiences who keep on shoving disgusting candy, drinks and snacks down their throat while seeing just about every show I see in London or US. I did see Color Purple in the US last night, and it was quite a mixed crowd. There was a black girl sitting next to me who had the whole church going, arm raising routine going on-and it got old and I was about to tell her to relax..but there was a HUGE group of New York public schools students (wearing t-shirts that say #IMHERE), and their behavior was absolutely impeccable.

"The producers of the show said in a statement: “We are extremely sorry that the audience were unable to see the preview performances yesterday."
I wonder why the producers felt it necessary to refer to the fact that these were preview shows in their statement? Totally irrelevant to those customers who were disappointed. Unless of course you're trying to underplay the situation, or make out that people should somehow expect and put up with problems with previews?
Its a pretty badly worded statement really.

Whoever wrote the article evidently doesn't have much experience of attending shows. Saying "it is virtually unheard of for four cast members to be struck down by illness at the same time" is ridiculous. I've seen a number of shows over the years where at least 4 members of the cast have been off sick out of a 30-odd person company so they have had to cut ensemble tracks because so many ensemble members have either been off themselves or covering for sick principals.

Don't forget it's only, what, 3 weeks into previews. Why on EARTH would they have more than 3 Effies stage ready before the show has even been finalised? It's perfectly heard of for them all to be ill. Let's be honest- no Effie, no show.

A regular night at Wicked! We've had some evenings where swings are covering multiple tracks or parts aren't going in for ensemble due to main cast absence!

They had an Effie, she just couldn't/shouldn't go on!

I think we might possibly be overlooking that there are 30+ people in the cast and lots more in the backstage crew. Amber said she wasn't ill, but if 4 other lead/featured roles were ill and those understudies are under (or not fully) rehearsed it would still stop a show. It doesn't just come down to whether or not they have an Effie. No Deena, Lorell, Jimmy and Curtis would be a disaster too, even more so if you lost a few dressers or stagehands to illness!

We shouldn't let that incident deter the fact of what a good show this is going to be judging by reviews so far

I was there on Monday when a dozen or so police officers came into the stalls - someone had found shotgun cartridges(!)
