The issue is that if you have travelled specifically it is huge disappointment and as the show is a hot ticket rebooking may be problematic in the short term.

Well at least the theatre will have to do its best to accommodate you as soon as possible. It's unfortunate, but it's life - noone can predict when they will be ill. And it's not as if it's towards the end of a run with no chance of rebooking to see the lead, as happened to me with another show last week.

The line-up for the Royal Variety show was set in mid-September so they have known since then........

If they could put on the understudies, they would put on the understudies. It's a huge financial loss for a show to cancel (and have to refund, etc) for two scheduled performances. If they can put on two under-rehearsed understudies who would still be able to pull through, I'm sure they'd rather do that. I'm curious to find out how "far up" this has to go to sign off on canceling a show, especially during this period. Or is it just up to the company manager to decide?

I don't have a problem with them cancelling today. It's last night that I have a problem with, very bad form.

Gosh, I love dramas! The Savoy strikes again! Savoy is the gift that keeps on giving as far as backstage drama goes!

Cancelling the show would be a producer decision, and it would not have been made lightly. It really is a last resort!

After the alternates performance last night, I wouldn't be surprised if she has been pulled.

Least it wasn't a case of the dreaded 'technical difficulties'

Least it wasn't a case of the dreaded 'techincal difficulties' I was beginning to wonder if the taps provided technical difficulties instead of water.

When was the last time any show was cancelled?! It's not something I've heard of... (although Wicked must have come close on occasion with their regular witch shortage!)

Ragtime was a couple of times recently - but they don't have understudies.

I guess Karen Mav got a bit of flack last night: Good for her. The interweb can make some people so nasty (and cowardly). Yaaaay to Karen Mav!!

Poor Karen.
I recall The Bodyguard being canceled (also matinee and evening) when the cast got sick.

Would the producers have insurance against the cancelation of a performance?

Not an expert, but I think insurance would cover accidents, damages, etc and not just everyday illness

Hopefully once the show officially opens everything will go more smoothly and the alternates will improve if people say they aren't 100%

Do we know if the alternates would have been rehearsed fully for this show? I'd always heard that the rehearsals and Preview are for the main cast, with cover rehearsals coming after Press Night. Does anyone know what the situation here has been?

Does anyone know what the situation here has been? To take a wild guess, I would say that Amber and Karen are both fully rehearsed as they've already been on, but the 2nd alternate/any other understudies haven't been, hence the Amber/Karen switch on Wednesday/Friday. My guess is that this evening both Amber and Karen are ill, which sadly left the producers with little alternative.
