I believe the first alternate performance is Wed 30th FYI (as the first week of previews is a 7 show week) Is it really?? We had tickets for the 23rd but changed them as I thought Amber wasnt doing any Wednesday evenings! I think it cost my friend a lot of money to change and get similar seats. I'm not going till January now.

aimee16.. thank you! I don't mind seeing Amber again. Not at all! Though when I booked the ticket the site did say she won't be on. But we'll see...

Yes, generally Today Tix lottery tell you 4 hours before the curtain - so around 3.30pm for a 7.30pm start. You then have an hour to respond and buy the ticket before it gets offered elsewhere. This is essential for those of us that live outside London. But as I have said before NEVER won.

We should all of us agree to try and enter one day, see how many entries we can have between us, and see how many of us win. (Although if I won and couldn't go that evening, I'd be worried they might blacklist me for next time.)

Well. I don't think I've ever seen a reaction like it. If you like your musicals big, loud, brash and blousy then 'Dreamgirls' is the show for you. It's got all of the subtlety of Nigel Farage at the EU but it's no worse for it. Apart from the big numbers (and they are BIG) the score is a bit so-so and the set is quite simple (but I believe reminiscent of the original Broadway production) but it doesn't really matter. The show is a HIT.
It's got it all. A terrific cast, there's a lovely sparkly curtain that gets its own round of applause, some great costumes and even that boy from E4's 'Stage School'. Yes really. Some of them have actually got work as a result of appearing in that show. It's a world gone mad.
What makes it though is the great cast. Joe Aaron Reid and his delightful eyebrows are great as Curtis and Adam J Bernard as Jimmy Early almost (almost) steals the entire show. He is amazing. He should definitely see his name appear come awards season.
And the Dreams? I thought they were great. Ibinabo Jack is hilarious as Lorelle and I thought Liisi LaFontaine (apart from having a fabulous name) had more than a touch of the Miss Ross about her. She's not really supposed to be the big voice that Effie is but she is certainly a match for Amber during 'Listen'. Lily Frazer is the only weak one I thought, which is a shame as she was great in 'In The Heights' but here, she just doesn't have the vocals or acting chops. She looks lost.
And Amber. I think she's a slightly better singer than actress (I think she's just a touch too perky in the second act) but OMGosh, those vocals are IN. SANE. Just when you think she might have pushed herself a bit too far, she just keeps on flying. Round of applause when she first appears and a standing ovation for 'And I Am Telling You . . ' which is completely and utterly deserved. A few people standing here and there for 'I Am Changing' (cleverly staged) and 'Listen' (think Whitney & Mariah at the Oscars and turn up the volume) and the roar for her when she takes her bow lifts the roof. Seriously, do not miss her. Once she's settled in, I think her performance could go down in the history of London's glitzy West End.

Ryan-loved the review. Agreed on everything except I don't think Liisi channels La Ross. Fully agreed on Lily Frazer. Too bad. She can really own that moment in the confrontation but it's lost.

You guys are making me miffed I didn't book this for earlier...usually I like to give a show a few weeks of previews to settle down before I see it, which is what I did with this, but by the sounds of it, it was almost perfection from the off. Can't wait.

I wouldn't say that it was almost perfection but it's in fantastic shape for a preview. I think there is some settling in to do and once that happens, it'll be stunning. I think Amber and Liisi need a bit more time but that's more about them becoming more nuanced in their roles rather than them needing lots of work (if that makes sense). Not sure how Amber is going to keep up those vocals for months on end but if she can, oh my! To be honest, even if she's at 75% of what she's doing now she'll still be pretty sensational.
I have to say that I've not experienced an atmosphere like it and you could absolutely sense the real excitement in the building beforehand. The audience were whooping and clapping all the way through the show with some people standing up in parts. There was clapping and cheering when Effie sings that first "and I am telling you . . " and you could tell people were willing something special from Amber. They were on their feet from the "and you, and you, and you . . " and stayed up until the curtain went down. The buzz directly after the curtain dropped at the interval was startling, genuine thrill and excitement.

I agree with Ryan that there's some tightening to be done, but it's a great great show. Power belting type shows tend to have these crazy audiences ovating and cheering midway through song on the big change of key moments. Reminds me of when The Bodyguard first opened. Crazy applause during the final key change of I Have Nothing and I Will Always Love You.

Disappointed in their social media campaign. Savoy Theatre is doing a better job than the actual show account.

Can't actually wait for this show now!!
What is the set like? Is it a heavy technical show with automation, lifts etc??
Also, does anybody know how busy stage door has been?

Aimee16 was right, alternate wasn't on. But Riley killed it again, and in fact was even better tonight. She's a bit Disney Channel at times, but otherwise, man...
Harry Krieger was in my same row and sitting on the far isle seat (where I sat last time, but a row in front)..I also like the isle seats, normally. One less noisy person to sit next to. I think he was accompanied by an assistant. Casey Nicholai in the row behind me, this time. I stopped Mr. Krieger at intermission and told him I saw Side Show last night, and this is my second outing, and thanked him for his gorgeous music. He was very nice and said thank you, you're very kind (and touched my arm, I need to add). Nicholas was overhearing and was laughing (maybe remembered me from the night before). I turned to Nicholai and said, so you're doing Mean Girls, I can't wait to see that. I was so tempted to say, that's so fetch.
BTW-Lily Frazer needs to go. She really is under delivering.

I'm really not surprised Lily is under-delivering, she was pretty awful in In the Heights when I saw it so I expected nothing less of her in all honesty.

I hope she's not the Deena understudy? She's got the Deena look and it sort of makes sense to "award" whoever they cast as Michelle as understudy Deena, Michelle a kind of thankless role save a killer line at the end of Act I.
