Do they really need to have other understudies when they have two girls who alternate and are basically only being hired to do two performances a month each?

A friend bought me 2 excellent tickets to see this for my birthday ages ago. Today I realised they're for a Wednesday night, when Amber is off. Gutted. I hope he can change them for another night.
Zero interest in seeing an understudy for Effie.

I wonder though, are they going to be in the theatre just on those Wednesday nights? If so, they'll need at least 1, if not 2 u/s in case, for example, Amber were to call out at 6.30pm on a non-Wednesday. Obviously if the Alternates are going to be sat around the theatre like a Standby would, then I would say further understudies aren't necessary. |

You'd be surprised. The two alternates could easily be out of commission. One of them on vacation, while the other one gets sick. Happens all the time. Totally happened with The Bodyguard in the original run. Alternate out of town, first understudy sick. Second understudy steps in.
Most shows have two understudies if there are no alternates, and still would have two understudies in addition to an alternate. I believe that's the case with Wicked too.
tbfl, you can change your tickets. I've changed my tickets twice already. There' a small fee, but they'd totally do it.

I completely understand that side of things, I just don't understand the having two girls alternate the alternate spot on the Wednesday which only equates to about two performances a month each bar holidays. Even Wicked only has one lady listed officially as Alternate who also is first cover for holidays, which I assume is the case here. But then the other two understudies are in the ensemble anyway. |

You'd be surprised regarding having one if them sitting backstsge, At Wicked at least, the Alternate/Standby does come in every performance in the case of emergency. At intermission, if not called onstage, they are allowed to leave but if something goes wrong, dependant on their distance from the venue etc, they will go on during the second half or they will have another understudy go on. |

I agree. Two alternates is odd. I would understand if she had two off days, but it seems a bit weird. It'll be so hard for them to even get a grip on the mechanics of the show and get comfortable performing because they get to go on so infrequently. Unless you have one alternate take a long black for say a month and then another one takes another month and so on.

I hope people don't clap and scream like this during the show. On Broadway, this was apparently the reaction and then some during this song. To a point the show in the next door theatre would hear the audience going crazy at this point in the show during their own performance! |

Well it was an awards show with free wine but I wouldn't be surprised if this reaction happenes when the show hits the stage.
I hope that's not the case as you will miss out on hearing parts of the song, I can imagine a standing ovation situation occurring too - I'm not too big on 'Dreamgirls' as didn't think much of the film, does this song close Act 1??

The part where the dreams comes on at the very end has always been there and people can take it to mean different things; Effie not getting her chance at fame, the Dreams going on without her etc. it's in the stage directions. Although I agree that most people will applaud through it and not really give it much attention after what should be THE song of the performance. I cant wait to see it! |

I had heard that the reason the Dreams follow directly after this song is that by doing this Effie is denied her applause from her audience which just adds to the feeling of loss and rejection that has taken part in the story.

London- prepare for a huge stonking smash hit.
I was at the dress rehearsal tonight and I honestly can't remember a show that has blown me away like this.
It's a really classy production. Great set design- amazing lighting and some fabulous costumes.
What a joy to finally have this musical on a London stage. I'd forgotten how many great songs it has and although at times it was far too loud (and half of the lyrics unintelligible) it still wows.
2 words...
Amber. Riley.
Holy f**k is she extraordinary. Think she sounds good when performing on tv? Wait till your sat in the theatre watching her. Absolutely jaw dropping. Wonderful acting performance too.
Other great turns come from Ibinabo Jack , Adam J Bernard and Tyrone Huntley. Sadly Liisi LaFontaine totally lets the show down. Weak voice and ZERO star quality, which completely unbalanced things.
That aside, this is a wonderful show that is going to blow people away.

I saw the Dreamgirls Facebook page today and it said that cast members of Harry Potter and Mormon were there for the dress rehearsal, and I actually wondered if you'd be there because you've attended some of those before!
I am SO excited to be there tomorrow.
