Didn't fancy this or think it would be for me but was worth it to see Karen Mav move me to floods of tears at the end of the first act..... The whole show not a patch on 42nd Street for showmanship or precision although the lighting sequences and usage were brilliant. Some good voices but the diction was poor in first act - but worth it for that one moment at the end of Act 1 Have you seen amber ? X No - only online |

I notice that Ruth Brown has a "showcase" run at The Other Palace coming up and it's produced by Sonia Friedman....so obviously no fall out or bad blood there. Liked by the Dreamgirls account on twitter too. Maybe SF gave her the showcase to compensate her and ensure she keeps her gob shut about the goings on backstage |

I really think that the problem for Karen is that she isn't getting enough steady shoes where she can settle. Her performances seem very random and I think it's hard to nail songs when your singing them almost once every two weeks to an actual audience. What I can definitely say though is that performance is definitely better than the one I saw in May which means she is improving (I also think the date in the title is meant to be June 5th rather than July 5th as I was there that performance and she was not on for Effie). The start of the song was also incredible, to me I honestly think Karen is the best Effie, due to her tone of voice - she definitely has the most potential and if she had a chance to perform on a regular basis I believe she could work on her issues with the last minute of the song. The fact this was performed almost 2 months ago also gives me hope that she is still continuing to improve - in my opinion that's the only song she struggles with. I've talked with her and she literally told me "growling hurts", leading me to believe that maybe it's how Effie is directed? Anywhoo I found all her other songs to be perfect, especially I Am Changing which is also posted on the channel. |

Karen does have a few weak moments where she doesn't support her vocals but I actually think she has a nicer voice than Marisha. |

Just wanted to embed the link. She has a great voice, she has gotten a lot stronger! She does have some weaker moments too, she really is yelling at the end of the song, which I know Marisha does too, but Karen comes across more like she is pressuring her voice too much with it but other than that, she sings it well, and a lot softer for the most part than both Marisha and Amber I'd say.
Also nice to hear the whole song for once. I've seen the show twice (both Marisha) and both times the audiences were going crazy thoughout the song, which I love me some crazy, but its nice to hear it in full!

I would say, having heard the three girls (Marisha live, Amber on Cast Recording, Karen via audio), judging it on those alone, Marisha is still my favourite vocally. But I want to hear Karen live to see a full performance. |

Going on vocals I don't see how Amber doesn't win hands down. The other two aren't a remote patch on her for vocals.

I just perfer Marisha's vocals (sorry!). And I have said itbefore, based on what I have heard from alot of those who have seen her live, the vocals are amazing but the acting is, well, not really there. It's basically Amber singing the songs amazingly and not much else there. I need a performance, which, for me, you get from Marisha. But that may change once I see the other two live, we shall see. |

When Marisha did, she left me with goosebumps.
Amber is 10/10, whereas for me Marisha is 8/10.

I think Marisha got a bit screwed over personally by some. She came in, no one here knew who she was, blew the roof off the Savoy her first few performances and got raves (rightly so, I was there her first performance day) and so, she could never live up to that with everyone. It happens with shows and performers all the time, you hear so much about them, that when you see them live, expectations are so high that it can never live up to it. 42nd Street being a prime example. Everyone raved (again, rightly so, as I saw the 3rd preview), but after a week or two, a few dud reviews came out of it. I'm not saying everyone got caught up in the responses to her, but I do think that over that over time some have and therefore have been left cold. I wonder how people would feel had she not got the great responses at the start of her run, would they still feel how they feel now about her (not a critique, an opinions an opinion, but just curious thought). |

For me, vocally it's Amber hands down. I can't recall any other time when somebody's vocal performance left me physically shaking. Ever. Yet that's how I was at the interval. That said, she may as well have been singing the songs at a concert, there wasn't really a great deal of acting for me.
Marisha, however, is an equally amazing vocalist. I don't think her voice is as strong and clear as Amber's, but she has different qualities. She has a much more raw tone, and she brings a lot more emotion to the part. Her acting is streets ahead too.
When I saw Amber, I was watching Amber Riley sing Dreamgirls. When I saw Marisha, I was watching Effie White.

There is no denying Amber's talent but there is equally no denying Marisha's characterisation. The audience reacted differently to both performances too. Lots of mid-song whoops and applauses for Amber, akin to a concert - whereas Marisha's applause and audience reaction was largely at the end of the songs, as though we had been on the journey with the character. Don't get me wrong, I loved both girls. But Marisha tipped it for me as I felt she 'got' the character more. |

Thought I would weigh in with my two cents, even though they've been said here before. I've seen both Amber and Marisha twice live, and both are phenomenal. I saw Amber last night for the second time and she has massively improved in her acting since I saw her last a few months ago, namely in And I Am Telling You. The performance felt so much more emotional, in fact Amber performed it rather differently to last time, which was almost a direct copy of her on the cast recording (bar the 'I know you can' money note). This time seemed far more unique, crying through some of the lines and mixing up the vocal riffs and shaping - it was far rawer and a wild improvement on 'Amber Riley sings Dreamgirls' which was the vibe I got last time. Part of me wonders if last time I was comparing too much to Marisha though, who acts up a storm of passion and I am low-key obsessed with, and whilst I do love her vocals they are not as perfect in terms of cleanliness and tone (but I personally prefer the roughness in the role). This time I was also seeing the show with a newbie which might have helped! Overall, I'd say I still prefer Marisha in the role but that might be because she was my first Effie, speaking of which:
Question for everyone that's seen the show live with different Effies: was the actress that evoked the strongest reaction in you the one who you saw first? I think a lot of people have a connection to their first experience of a show too which might count towards people's opinions.

I've seen both Amber and Marisha. Both are beasts vocally and the two of them made me cry like a baby, but Marisha is the better actress imo. She just gives you that extra umph. And she's lovely, we met her at SD and she's just the cutest thing ever.
