I'm regretting I bothered to book for this. I'm no great fan of Fiddler, some good songs but a really turgid, tiresome 'plot.' I thought it would be worth it since I've seen every one of Evan's Christmas musicals at the Crucible and they've all been excellent.
Still always enjoy going to Chichester, even though it's a pain to get to.

I saw it and thought it was god-awful. Fair enough. I didn't, but like the cast album. Just wanted to be clear, though, that it was financially successful. I get ya

I really, really liked C.R Horwood's touring production but loathed it in 2007 in town. Might check it out.

I got some last minute tickets to the first preview of this last night and enjoyed it immensely. Omid Djalili is perfect as Tevye. At the start, Daniel Evans came out to say that the actor who was playing Lazar had been taken seriously ill and a stand had had less than 24 hours rehearsal (Gareth Snook), but it all went well, no fluffed lines or technical issues that I could see. I saw the touring version 4 years ago, and this one is far superior IMHO. A young and energetic cast kept things lively, it got a well deserved standing ovation. After the 'meh' Sweet Bird of Youth, it was great to see something more appropriate on the big stage. Gareth is an excellent professional.

My Chichester trips are looking as ill-fated this year as last; why did I not realise that it would never again be worth the risk of trying to do a two-show day? I booked one production in each space on a matinee day and at the time had to take a chance on which would be the longer. So I got that wrong and with Fiddler in the evening slot and turning out not to end until 10.15 pm, it was already looking as though I wouldn't get home until 1 am IF the last trains were running.
I thought that if Fiddler turned out to be a turkey I would simply ditch that ticket rather than ask to switch it to a matinee on a separate date; now ASLEF are striking again on the day of my visit so i'll be unable to get there anyway - aargh!

Guys, aren't we being a bit premature here? One poster really liked it and one other didn't. Let's not all throw our tickets back all at once.

I'd love it to be great as though the show has never appealed to me, I thought it was time to give it a go and see. My dilemma now is less the reviews than the travel difficulty, and there are bound to be many others affected. If it turns out to be unmissable, I'll just have to camp in the surrounding park or something, as all the affordable accommodation was booked months ago.

Alice, we have a fine and long standing tradition on the board of condemning shows before viewing them, subsequently declaring we will not be attending them, but then ultimately posting: "Went to this last night despite reservations..." This tradition MUST be allowed to be upheld.

This tradition MUST be allowed to be upheld. But it can't be good for you, can it? All that contempt. Comments on the CFT facebook have been positive, except for somebody who didn't like the downbeat ending. Let's hope next year that Daniel programmes a musical version of Stephen King's 'The Mist'. Speaking of happy endings, @ryan, are you still up for that fiddle on the roof with me & Mrs L? We're going on the 27th...

Driving down tomorrow for my annual Chichester trip and can't wait to see this! I'm hoping to add an extra visit towards the end of the run.

Gareth Snook is listed in the programme I bought today.
I really really loved today's matinee. The score has some of the most glorious harmonies I've ever heard in musical theatre. I enjoyed the staging and some touches were just beautiful. I'm not totally convinced on some of the actors but Tevye and Golde carried the show wonderfully. It's got such pertinent themes for today's world and it was a joy to finally see this show. Already planning a return trip!

Gareth Snook is listed in the programme I bought today. Wow, they must have reprinted a whole new batch of programmes, mine has an insert with Gareth Snook's bio on it, but Chris Jarman in the main cast details bit.

It's getting pretty good reviews - mainly 4 star.

Happy to see those reviews as due to ASLEF strikes, I had to choose between driving there and back, missing out, or forking out for a hotel, and I chose the hotel option. Now the strikes have been called off, which was always a possibility, but I couldn't take the risk and accommodation was already very booked up and the remaining rooms very expensive. Means what would have been a reasonably-priced day trip will instead cost almost as much as a cheap weekend break, but at least I won't be distracted during the performance by concerns about having to run for the last train - and indeed whether the train itself is running.

Will this transfer to the West End? Is Omid Djalili a big enough name to sell tickets?

Does anyone know what the running time is please? 2hr 45 inc interval Ta I thought it was about that, except one of the reviews said 3 hours and I need to catch a train back to London to see Girl From The North Country in the Evening.

As I understand it, it's been staged with a false proscenium arch, which surely has transfer written all over it (not literally, of course).

With a notable name leading this musical. Decent reviews Popular Show A Very Good Production False Arch
This has legs, it will either transfer to one on London's smaller theatre in an open run or play the London Colesium or Palladium for a limited run next year.

Decent reviews? I just read from The Stage that it was an unimaginative disappointment! I also didn't like the Liverpool Everyman version either...
