Don't laugh: I was comparing SSGB with High Castle thing. I'm not in the slightest hard of hearing but I couldn't hear quite a lot of the dialogue in SS though I loved the Hopper Noir set in the cafe near the beginning. I could hear ok the High Castle but I couldn't believe in it. How did the Germans invade the US? And when do the girl and the bloke realise they are on the same side or do they? I'm only a few eps in. But I did come to the conclusion that they are both Westerns, New Westerns.

Having survived my adventure to Reading and back yesterday today is sponsored by caffeine and sugar. I've also managed to receive two job rejections in 2 days both from things I applied for so long ago I'd entirely forgotten. So rejection out of the blue, always fun.
Anyone on here want to hire a researcher/writer/teaching type? or at least send me more coffee...

Ventured to Eastbourne for the weekday matinee of the touring production of Northanger Abbey (4 stars from Libby Purves whose enthusiastic review persuaded me to book for a production I'd previously been unaware of), fearing the worst as it was an(other) RMT strike day, plus I thought there might be lots of school parties.
In the event, both journeys went like clockwork and I've never sat amongst so well-behaved an audience in my life, so far as I can recall - certainly not in the last few years; indeed, I didn't know it was still possible. Not a teen in sight; in fact, I was apparently the youngest present, and everyone sat rapt and attentive, in silence for the entire 2 hours 45 minutes - no mobiles ringing or screens lighting up, no chatting, coughing, fidgeting, etc - wow! Don't know when I'll ever experience the like again but the audience almost deserved a star rating too.
Oh and the production itself is great fun: a witty, light-hearted romp though not without its darker moments.

My Ocado driver has just called to apologise for being late (half an hour so far) as his sat-nav has 'blown up.' (Is that even possible?) At the risk of sounding old (I'm not!) can't anyone read a map any more grumble grouch? I have given him directions from the street round the corner where he currently is. 10 minutes later he's still not here. Also, who's got bad wind?

Also, who's got bad wind? I have. It's scary: my roof isn't in the best of shape and I'm worried about ending the day with less roof than I started with. I keep staring at the ominous orange triangles on the Met Office site hoping that sheer force of denial will turn them yellow. At least I have a new garden fence to replace the old and rotten one that would blow over if a bird flew too close to it, or even looked at it.

It's pretty breezy here...slightly concerned I'm going to get blown into the Bay if I venture out at lunch!
Meanwhile work is dead and I'm sitting having a quiet fume about a 'friend' letting me down two weekends in a row in a fairly major way-by way of survey, if someone was staying with you this weekend you'd like to know their plans/arrival/if they were even coming before Thursday, yes? Also if you were going to visit them you'd like the plans not to be changed to a time you'd already left the city...asking for a friend obviously.

I've heard of papering a house but maybe yours was shrouded?

That sounds bad @thematthew . It's supposed to be short-lived so fingers crossed. We get short power cuts when a dog so much as barks at the electric cables in our area, so I'm dreading being cut off for longer. And, speaking of short-lived storms, I can think of a name beginning with D much better than Doris.......(wishful thinking?!)
Shopping update: 45 minutes. Nada!

Given the weather: For anyone interested in wind, check out earth.nullschool.net/. It's a zoomable and draggable globe showing air and ocean currents. There's a non-obvious menu under the "earth" label at the bottom that allows you to look at the winds at various altitudes and select various other options. (Annoyingly for the non-expert, altitudes are given in terms of air pressure, but it's still interesting.)

Because of the winds, I cancelled a visit I was going to make but I've sugar soaped the kitchen walls ready for the decorator and prepared a rehearsal schedule. Dunno which was more exciting!

I get to put up pictures of Hugh Jackman in gold trousers as legit research, so there's that. You mean people get paid to put up pictures of Hugh Jackman in gold trousers? Who knew? I've been doing it for nowt.

Right now I've picked myself up off the floor. No, as I'm not an employed academic. Because those are a rarer beast than a Wolverine. So I took a day off from my 'day job' to talk about my research passion project, otherwise known as my career and bank balance killing PhD.
So short version, I do it for free too. Ogling the Jackmans in gold lame since 2003.

Well emcardiff, if anyone was going to get a PhD in Hugh Jackman in gold trousers, I hope it's going to be you! x
Speaking of "The Boy from Oz" I'm still gutted we never got to see it over here, even though we would probably have had John Barrowman as Peter Allen!

And allows me to use those pictures in the occasional talk...
I'm still bitter as well that we never got it, even though we won't talk about how many times I saw it in New York...ahem.

So windy here, my wheelie-bin has just been destroyed, and "non-recyclables" now festoon the gardens of both myself and my neighbours. Though they have shared theirs with me, too, so that's nice. Prakesh's brand of rice looks interesting, in fact. My drive this morning was like 'green bag dodgems' as the good people of Splott had dutifully put their rubbish out and it was now out in the middle of the road!

Was planning some outdoor exercise provided I got enough of my admin and chores done, but while it's still so gusty, it seems unwise to go out unnecessarily. Wasn't too bad when I walked into the local town centre earlier - and I had lots of heavy bags to act as ballast if necessary - but I've tried and failed to come up with a tree-free route for a "proper" walk and I've seen so many tweets about fallen branches, power lines down, services being swamped by emergency calls, etc, that I think I'd better play safe and stay in.

Mini Tibidabo has just texted on her way home from driving lesson. It would appear that she's been driving around without L plates as they blew off at some point - I'm talking a big official driving school roof sign here! The poor learner girl now driving is only on her second lesson. They've had to stop at a petrol station to buy some cheap L plates! If anyone see a driving school sign, A41 area, let me know!! Mini Tibs said she has had to do loads of 3 point turns as so many roads are blocked by trees. As long as they keep falling between the cars.......

Hadn't intended going out but had notification that a couple of packages were ready for collection at our local Argos, so as we were there we went for a very 'invigorating' walk along the seafront. Actually did get blown along at one point! I love watching the wild sea, shame it wasn't high tide but just watching huge waves crash out in the bay and around the harbour is so thrilling. Then, an unscheduled visit to a tiny seafront fish restaurant for crab risotto - lovely day! Made up for me spilling a mug of tea over the new sofa last night............

Doris kindly decided to provide her heaviest rain this morning for the 10 minutes when I was walking from the station to work. Soaked from above the knees downwards. It took about 3 uncomfortable hours for my trousers to dry & my socks were still wet when I got home & took my boots off this evening. All the trains were cancelled this afternoon so I had to call my mother to retrieve me & the traffic was so bad it took her about an hour and a half to do the 10 mile round trip. I am not praying the trains are sorted out before I want to get down to London tomorrow evening for my next TPTGW.
The only bright spot in my day was this Twitter exchange (those who haven't seen TPTGW won't get it):
