Well, National Theatre, all is forgiven after the less-than-exciting past few months. Twelfth Night, Young Chekhov, Angels in America, Peter Pan, Hedda Gabler... I know where my money will be going in the next year or so! My poor bank account: I am not strong enough to say no to any of those productions... |

Cant say I am all that excited by the rest of the offerings, aside from Gabler/Van Hove.

Overall it feels like a very commercial set of announcements - yes, a few curve balls - but a lot of big name plays with some big name actors/directors

Yep, lots to get easily excited by, with familiar playwrights and directors and cast members. I guess they've been fully aware of the feedback thus far and have really felt the need to go all out with this new announcement! I'm really annoyed about Sunday performances getting the chop though, they were extremely useful to me.

Public booking on 3 Mar for Threepenny, Chekhov, Deep Blue Sea, Plough and the Stars, Sunset at the Villa Thalia. 4 Feb for Another World. Another World is described as "the final full production in the Temporary Theatre", so maybe it will be used for readings and other events, but something is changing. |

I said 'oooh' out loud 3 times reading the announcement, so I'm happy with it.
I hope they get Andrew Scott for Angels in America, as well as Andrew Garfield.

Oooh very exciting (I am going off what you lot have said not actually anything I've seen elsewhere, mind you). No more Sunday shows?? That's ridiculous, it was such a hard-won battle and the only reason they were empty over the last year is because RN's programming, for whatever reasons, didn't really take off. It's not like most of the shows were selling well on other nights either...
It was always so sad to see the NT shut up on Sundays while the rest of the South Bank was throned; I know the new pub will make it look less forlorn, but still really sad. And I like a Sunday mat as well.

Oh, Lucian Msamati is Toledo in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom! Same guy who was an excellent Iago last year. I knew I recognised him from somewhere

All a bit underwhelming, already booked for The Suicide, I might try for The Deep Blue Sea but I've had the Terence Davies film version with Rachel Weisz sat on the shelf staring at me for the last 4 years without me feeling any rush to watch it (it seemed like a good idea when I bought it), so I might just save my money altogether.

It's a shame they are scrapping Sunday performances, they allow greater flexibility for many of us to see productions. Surely that means there'll be less performances in all theatres overall, won't it?
However, the season itself looks very promising to me.

Have to say I'm way more excited by these announcements than I was by last year's. Not perfect but definitely enough to have me making more return trips than I have over the past 12 months.

All works for me, predicting a bit of a scrum for Angels. Tempted to see Chekhov Trilogy again as it has added Geoffrey Streatfield as Ivanov and in The Seagull this time.
Plus Ralph Fiennes as Antony. In 2018.
Oo - and Rosalie Craig in The Threepenny Opera, and a new Lucy Kirkwood. This is the most exciting theatre announcement in some time for me.

Just had a read through the press release and what really jumps out is Angels in America and Amadeus, both which I Haven't seen.
This is Rufus Norris second seasons announcement now and he hasn't had any tendency to go back to do musical revivals. which were popular in the nineties and served the National well at the time, so take it this isn't going to happen under this tenure.
No plays from the great British contemporary playwrights, such as Pinter, Coward, Osbourne or Ayckourne.Pinter hasn't been done for ages.

At first, Amadeus sounds to me like a risk - who wants to see that play now, (beyond Chichester)? - but Michael Longhurst (A Number, Constellations) will probably give us a bold new take and produce an unmissable show.
