Pippin for some reason never took off in the UK - but I'd be desperate to see the circus themed production that was on Broadway and now on tour in the US come to London/UK Tour. What would other people's view be on Pippin?
Also would love Patina Miller to be the Leading Player, or just be back in London even if its for a short stint! Love her!

I loved the production at the Menier a few years ago, although I know it wasn't to everyone's taste. It had a great cast (Harry Hepple, Matt Rawle, Frances Ruffelle, Louise Gold) and a lot of thought and effort had been put into the design, although it just missed the mark. Some of the songs are wonderful (Corner of the Sky, No Time At All, With You) so I'd love to hear them again, and see this different production. (In fact, I'll add it to the Underrated Musical list!)

I enjoyed the Menier Pippin, but I think it cut most of the second act. I went to the NY production and loved the first half - wonderfully styled and energetic - but after the interval it just dragged on and on. If it came to London I'd gladly watch the first half again, but leave at the interval.

It's been mentioned in the "underrated musicals" thread that the current US-Tour of Pippin is in Amsterdam right now (until 10 April). While it still isn't London, I believe a hop across the channel may be easier and cheaper for you Brits than a hop across the Atlantic, so you might consider a trip to Amsterdam.
I'm going to see it there tomorrow evening, so I'll report back. I did enjoy the Menier production, by the way, and its computer game concept. I think Pippin just suffers from being a typical product of the 70s, when strong books didn't really matter (see also Godspell or Hair) but it has enough nice songs to tide over the evening and I'm curious about the circus elements of this new production.

I loved the Menier Pippin, thought the recent Broadway revival was ok, exciting, but nowhere near as innovative as the Menier.

LOVED the Menier production. The video game thing worked so well and was done brilliantly cleverly. Maybe some of the people who like musicals don't like video games and the idea put them off.
I've seen clips of the most recent Broadway show and while it looks spectacular I'm just not sure I'd enjoy it as the concept is very odd, same with the original. I'm not surprised it has never done that well over here. I do love so many of the songs though.

I saw both the chocolate factory production and the recent Broadway revival, both were obviously completely different takes on the show.
Whilst I really enjoyed the chocolate factory production, the circus themed revival really worked. Especially Patina, who was just fantastic,

I saw it in pre-Broadway tryouts in Boston. Honestly..I didn't get it. I'm not a fan of circus/cirque or whatever spin you want to put on acrobatic circus acts. I didn't have a problem with the staging per se, and of course the Fosse inspired choreography is great. It was the plot and book that just wasn't engaging or inspirational as far as I'm concerned.

I saw the recent Broadway production and wasn't that impressed. The circus tricks were visually impressive but, barring a few of the musical numbers I thought the book and plot were messy and overall I left disappointed.
I nominated this in the "overrated" thread. I don't think different staging would help me enjoy it more, it's just not for me. I like Forbidden Broadway's take on it though!

Pippin is such a weird show. I never got into it despite seeing two different productions -- maybe because of the whole play-within-a-play conceit and feeling like nothing was truly at stake.

I just left the theatre in amsterdam and absolutely loved pippin!
If anyone is planning to go to see kyle dean massey, I've got bad news, he's only doing it until 20 March!

The Chocolate Factory production if good could of easily transfer to Broadway, it got bad press, Barry and Fran Weissler were actively looking to bring Pippin to Broadway and worked with the Chocolate Factory with La Cage Aux Follies' realising this production was lame, they turned instead to Harvard, via ART and Diane Paulus.

Consider going on Sunday - we've paid 105 Euro for a double room at a 4*-hotel right next to the Royal Palace on Dam Square. I saw that the same rooms retail at +250 Euro if you stay Saturday - Sunday. Which they aren't worth. Anyway, I'm sure it's not the only hotel hiking up prices insanely on Saturdays. Having said this, I did enjoy Pippin a lot. The flaws are in the show itself - there is very little happening in the second act at all - but while I agree that the Menier approach was more innovative, this was just really really entertaining and the cast was excellent. |

Thanks for the tip, I was looking at a couple of nights midweek as I have leave to use up. I did find some more reasonable prices on Air BnB but then went to look at the flight again and that had gone up by £50 (it's always more from Manchester). The all-knowing theatre gods are saying "no" so I'll leave it  Ill make do with YouTube clips. I do love those first two songs  |

If you're looking up flights before booking, you should always clear your cookies before going back. They know when you've been looking at flights otherwise, and that's why the prices go up, to panic you into booking while also making a little extra profit. Give it a try!

Last time I was in Amsterdam (which was a Saturday night) I stayed in an airport hotel, which was much cheaper than the centre.
They are worth looking at. The trains into the centre are cheap and frequent and run late. It's nothing like the hassle of staying at a Heathrow hotel and trying to get into central London (the distances are much shorter).
Am seeing Pippin in a few weeks time and looking forward to it. Was an excellent production in New York (yes, the book is a bit flawed, but the songs are good and the production for this one really works).

I always stay at the Casa400 hotel. This hotel is close to the Amsterdam Amstel train/metro station (about a 5 to 7 minute walk). And just 2 metro stops (about 3 minutes) away from the Carre theatre. Because the hotel is outside the city centre it is not that expensive, and you get al large, clean room with a nice bathroom and a mini fridge (small supermarket at the station).
I stayed there last sunday to see Pippin. Great show, very good cast!

Just been looking at the cast and it's interesting that quite a few of the original broadway cast are back for the final leg (but didn't do the North American tour). |
