Which plays, novels, films or true life stories would be good source material for a new musical? Here are a few ideas
Serial Mom - Just the right side of subversive to have mass appeal and be the next Hairspray. I see a courtroom scene with a song and dance number called "One Beer At Lunch (is hardly drinking)". If Mink Stole is available even better.
Wallace - or even Wallace!. The story of Edward and Mrs Simpson. It's got the lot, illicit love, family feuds, revenge and a big finish with the abdication of the King and our current Queen being propelled into a life of duty. Not to mention all those fab 30's fashions.
Agatha - musical of the film which depicts Agatha Christie's unexplained disappearance, and discovery. Almost like a murder mystery but with no body. This would be one if those haunting, thoughtful pieces staged in an intimate theatre.
Bring Me Sunshine - the story of Eric and Ernie. This seems so absolutely obvious to me that I'm almost thinking it must have been done already. Has it? Or was that a tv drama? If not then it would be perfect. Comedians are always damaged and tragic, this also has an enduring friendship against a backdrop of the death of variety and the chance to recreate some of those big musical numbers from their tv shows. Who could play Angela Ripon?
Over to you...

Cilla the Musical - based on the recent ITV drama. Could be a play with music or a musical with hits from the 1960s. Staring Sheridan Smith, Hadley Fraser and Michelle Collins.
The Help - Play based on the popular book and 2011 film. Could premiere at the National before transfer.
The Girl on the Train - play based on the popular book. Should premier at the National (could make great use of the drum revolve at the Oliver) before a transfer. Starring Emilia Fox

Not to mention all those fab 30's fashions. There was a short-lived musical about them! It was called "Always"... which is all I remember as it's been some years, but I know it existed in the West End for a bit. One thing I've always wanted to see on stage was "The Last Unicorn". There was an "okayish" version in Germany some years ago, but I'm sure it could be done so much better. Ignore the animated movie (which had its own lovely soundtrack) and go back to the original novel by Peter S. Beagle - it sings so much, the musical is practically leaping off the pages. Otherwise I'd suggest a browse through the website rejectedprincesses.com - so many fantastic tales about fantastic women throughout the centuries that would make for great musicals with strong female leads from all over the world. I'd definitely love to see a decent stage version of Grania O'Malley's life to finally banish the bad taste of Boublil/Schoenbergs godawful sexist nonsense from my memory.

I just realised three out of my four suggestions (four out of five if we include Personal Services) have a woman as the central character. Give me a diversity badge! Or perhaps we could cast some men in the leads

Disney's Moana seems perfect for a stage musical.

Disney's Moana seems perfect for a stage musical. I think Moana a bit too cinematic for a stage adaptation but then again Disney managed to make The Lion King into a stage musical so anything is possible. I know they already Saturday Night Fever but I think a Bee Gees biomusical has potential to be a hit because their life story is full of ups and downs and they have such a huge catalogue of songs.

I have just though they do not really do musicals based on plays anymore. The ones I can think off are she loves me ,Oklahoma, spring awakening,Sweeney Todd and lots of other shows but non very recently. What play do you think could make a good musical?

There has never been a successful musical adaptation of Twelfth Night - one of Shakespeare's most musical plays. So that might be worth a punt.
Gosford Park the musical? Fellowes is all the rage at the moment!

How about Theatreboard - Rise of the Phoenix? Or, to quote The D, Rize of the Fenix?

I reckon that Pride could easily be transferred to the stage - a mixture of early 80s classics with some new material, I reckon it would work

Isn't Pride currently being developed by the team at the Old Vic? Also re Myra the Musical edinburghfestival.list.co.uk/event/425371-bonded-by-blood/Had tickets for this but missed it because the show we was watching before overran. Coincidentally that show was Thrill Me, about Leopold & Loeb. As you can tell I like my Musicals cheery I always thought Shirley Valentine could make a great musical.
