I guess if it left Summer 2017 it would be at the end of the current cast contracts. Surprised because it would have only done 2 years and it's a really good show!!!
That means (if that is true) that the theatres available this year will be Piccadilly, Gieguld, Wyndhams, Harold Pinter, Adelphi and then Aldwych (if Beautiful closss like I think it will this year) and Drury Lane (if 42nd Street does flop due to the poor advance people are saying)

Isn't it a bit early to be judging 42nd Street's speculated advance sales when its first preview is still 11 weeks away?

I apologise - I simply must have misunderstood these posts then: Beautiful closes and hopefully Thriller and Stomp too. I agree it would be good for the Aldwych as I can see Beautiful closing before the tour, as that's what West End shows tend to do if there is a tour confirmed. I wonder if that means the show will close in the West End around that time?
I think because you get lots of offers flying around for the show and you don't hear much from it so I presumed it wasn't doing well but if it is, then that's good for theo show Sometimes an extension is a last-ditch attempt though - hoping that enough people will want to book all the way into next summer to boost the coffers of the more immediate future. The length of this extension combined with a cursory read of the last few posts, I wouldn't assume that it's necessarily a good sign at all. I do agree with you, Baemax. I think to extend by a whole year is a very bold move which is either a sign of arrogance (thinking they'll sell easily) or they actually have got the advance to extend that far ahead. The WoS article says "Beautiful runs at the Aldwych until 22nd July 2017" so maybe it closes then? Might just be me being sceptical. An extension doesn't necessarily mean it will last until then though I've seen the odd offer around, how's this doing at the box office? Wouldn't be surprised if it closes beginning of next year to be honest |

My Broadway wishlist for London transfers is Dear Evan Hansen, Waitress, Something Rotten, and The Color Purple. Next to Normal would also be nice. I'll be much more excited for any of them than I am for Hamilton.
I agree that 42nd Street will have its work cut out to be a success on Drury Lane but I think it may surprise people and at least make it to early 2018. There's still plenty of time for it to build a respectable advance and with decent reviews it could have wider appeal than The Girls. I hope so anyway.

I honestly don't see Dear Evan Hansen in London at all, at least not in the West End. If Next to Normal never made it, I can't imagine Evan Hansen to. As much as I enjoyed it, I feel that American family musical dramas wouldn't come across well in London. There is something about the demographic of theatre goers in NYC versus London that would make it work in the US but not in the UK. If you look around, London audiences are still after either a mega-musical or shows that are glib, comfortable and safe. It could do well independently in a small non-West End venue, but I don't see a show about an American teenage boy with severe anxiety issues crossing over successfully.
Of the titles that have been thrown around, I can imagine Something Rotten doing basically okay, and perhaps Waitress, which I thought was fine and enjoyable but very safe and earnest, which will make it perfect.

To be fair, Next to Normal hasn't come over because the rights are being held back. That's why we haven't seen it in any fringe venues either.
I don't know, I think we'll never know unless we try. Certainly British people pay West End prices to see plays surrounding family dramas, so it seems strange that they wouldn't do the same for a musical, especially one as acclaimed as Dear Evan Hansen. I understand that British audiences haven't responded to more risky American musicals in the past but as I said earlier on in this thread, the last one they really tried in a West End venue was Spring Awakening which was eight years ago. The rise of Twitter, YouTube and social media could easily help sell something like Dear Evan Hansen (as I believe it will Hamilton), especially once the Tonys etc. have happened. I just think it's a shame not to even try. Surely audiences are getting slightly bored with movie adaptations, jukebox shows and Broadway revivals. I know I am.

The Adelphi is a prime theatre, along with the Piccadilly, so I presume loads of producers are looking to move a production to one of the theatres.
Shows I think could go to either:
Sleepless
Big
Strictly Ballroom

Presumably nothing is set in stone for Kinky Boots and if it has a decent summer it will more than likely see out the rest of this year at the Adelphi. It wouldn't surprise me if the show eventually posted closing notices for around January 2018. |
